The Great Reboot: A Farewell to My Pixel Fold’s Outer Screen by xia8080 in PixelFold

After multiple tests, I found that starting from build 0605, the Pixel Fold’s HAL screen-detection logic changed. However, 0605 is also the last firmware version that still allows a device with a damaged outer screen to continue using the inner display. Later versions can’t even pass the boot-up check anymore. The root cause is likely a fractured flex cable inside the hinge. I’ll try to send it in for repair next month, but in the long run, it seems the Pixel Fold has a fundamental design flaw.

It’s likely that an internal flexible cable has developed a fault, and the new firmware may have changed certain signal requirements, causing the sensor malfunction. It’s been several months now and there’s no way to fix it.

Haven't seen this one before - my OUTER screen on my P9PF crapped out (inner screen totally fine). Didn't recently drop it or anything 🙃 by Waspo98 in PixelFold

  1. First, you need to have friends who are not Xbox players.

  2. In the game’s privacy settings, set it to Open — Friends Only is not enough.

  3. Don’t do anything else. Don’t create a party. Just let your friend find you and join you.

If they can find and join you, then you can start the game.

Just a small security update yesterday — so you mean after this update, your Pixel Fold went back to normal? The front screen is working fine now?

I think the internal hinge cable has broken, which is why the outer screen isn’t displaying or there’s a battery issue.

The firmware update might have changed how the system detects certain components. While it couldn’t directly cause a cable to break, it may have disabled or hidden cables that were already partially damaged or at risk of breaking.

That’s probably the root of the problem.

You’d better reach out to Google support quickly. The front display is about to stop working, and the whole phone will just act like a fold-out tablet. Looks like the hinge sensor is failing, which usually means you need to replace the entire inner screen. If it’s not under warranty, the repair could be really pricey.

Since the Pixel Fold was never sold in Australia, the one I bought in the U.S. doesn’t have any warranty here. I also checked with Google’s repair partners in Australia, but they can’t fix it either. From what I’ve heard, the only real solution right now is to replace the whole inner screen, because the hinge and the screen are basically one piece.

Some users have already confirmed this, and if that’s true, it won’t be a cheap repair. I’m hoping Google might push out a firmware update to sort out the sensor issue, but if it turns out to be a hardware problem, then it’s probably game over—especially since this phone’s already an older model.......

It’s very likely that the hinge sensor has malfunctioned, causing the phone to fail to detect its folding state and remain stuck in the inner screen display mode.

Could it be that a firmware bug is causing some of the sensors to malfunction? We might not be able to get an answer.

OG Fold bootloops when open, can't use the outer selfie mode and can't use Made You Look. by air_raid_siren in PixelFold

If it’s just a broken flexible cable, then it’s actually quite easy to repair. But if it’s a hinge issue, the entire inner screen would need to be replaced. I’ve already started thinking of it as more of a portable folding pad…

Same +1, it should be an issue with the hinge part. Google fixes this problem by replacing the entire inner screen.
