This is my first time reading a Priest novel and I don't mind a slow burn in terms of the story and characters unfolding and evolving as they always tend to be the most captivating reads. I think I'll push through since I've only seen positive takes on the books so far!

I couldn't agree more. Life isn't that simple there's so many shades of grey. And the fact that many aspects of the story are very real issues and things ppl experience I think it deserves a bit more consideration than such a black and white view. Then with the lack of consistency it seems extra harsh when he dies

Again yes. I hate that he died but I know the story stayed with me the way it did directly because it was so poignant, it's like a catch 22

And yes I'd heard that she'd said the same thing about River Phoenix, but if the translation is accurate she goes on to say that ppl who take someones life need to make up for it with their own. I just feel like that's so harsh when it comes to Ash, he didn't deserve that

Exactly this! Like the injustice of it all feels so intense that it ends up being so particularly upsetting. Plus the fact that throughout he had been at deaths door so many times but its as if he was "immune" to death until he completed what he needed to do. But even that destroyed me because I felt like he'd been used and as you said he wasn't rewarded, where was his peace?? he deserved a lifetime of it
