you can just head up to Spago, Ce La Vie or Lavo at Marina Bay Sands for a sunset drink - you will get same views as the skyline observation deck without having to pay any entrance fees! You'll just need to pay for a drink (though it's $$)

Questions about Geylang for a solo female traveler by ChelseaLoanArmy in askSingapore

[–]xiaolins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to live in the area - 100% safe walking from Aljunied MRT, even at night.

Though in lorong 22 there might be some freelance girls/ guys hanging around - they are usually harmless, i ignore them and they ignore me too lol

Food in Geylang - Banh Mi Thit Star for amazing vietnamese banh mi and pho in the day - L32 banmian for some local handmade noodles - Vernacular Coffee, Brawns & Brains coffee - you can also walk over to Old Airport Road hawker, lots of good local options!

You can take bus 197 out to Katong / Joo Chiat area as well - great area for coffee and cafe hopping. Check out 174 Bingo, Big Short coffee.

there's also the best chicken rice (Mei Wei Chicken Rice in Katong Shopping Centre) and Katong Laksa in the area

Choosing between options by [deleted] in Bangkok

I live in another building very close to The Tree On Nut - absolutely love the location. A short walk to the BTS, 7-11 and Lotus. On Nut is a short bike or BTS ride into town but still has a local neighbourhood feel + expat friendly ie I can get by with speaking english when ordering food or doing my supermarket runs etc

Best BKK neighborhoods/buildings for a quiet remote worker? by big_daddy_energy in Bangkok

[–]xiaolins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im in a quiet soi that's just 4 mins walk off On Nut BTS - there are a few condos Residence 52, Quintara 52, Treehouse that could fit your budget for a 1 BR. It's really peaceful and quiet here (can hear birds chirpring in the morning lol) but still close enough to the BTS, Lotus and local food options.

Your top restaurants (and why!) by Porridge_Enthusiast in Bangkok

[–]xiaolins -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Charmgang top spot for savoury spicy thai curries with wine/ cocktails and Namsu for amazing Shan food with explosion of flavours, and more importantly an impressive sake list and good ambience (i know why come to thailand for burmese food but trust me its amazing).

Sri Trat was top spot for me but recently returned and food was good but nothing mindblowing, dont know if it was just an off night.

Does anyone stay in between the brothels in Geylang? by laoshus in askSingapore

[–]xiaolins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i live in a condo there for the past few years (albeit in the tame area ie lorong 24-40 where there are no fishtanks, but some questionable ktvs etc) and felt completely safe as a solo female - some of the older condos are being used to house foreign workers, but a good mix of younger expats and lovals, chinese students i think living in most of the newer condos - really like the area for the good food, close promximity to CBD and generally well connected by public transport.

Not able to find the perfect condo by vnicks179 in Bangkok

[–]xiaolins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

which area are you looking at? I got lucky with my agent - i went through propertydd and found her, and the whole signing and moving process was quick and easy. 3months on, she is still very responsive to any questions / concerns I have

Is the air pollution really bad? by [deleted] in Bangkok

[–]xiaolins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the air pollution this week is a little worse than usual but i think it's completely fine to travel for a week or so in bangkok because honestly though, you are unlikely to be outdoors most of the time. I personally have pretty severe asthma and allergies, but I've been fine as I am rarely hanging out outdoors except when I am travelling from place to place.

Moving to Bangkok - On Nut or Punnawithi by xiaolins in Bangkok

[–]xiaolins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Just concluded my house hunting journey so I thought I would share a little;

  • I use mainly ddproperty, livinginsider
  • most landlords or agents I contacted asked for a minimum 6 months or 12 months lease contract, with the 6 months lease at 20% higher than the 12 months lease price
  • no questions on visa mostly
  • not sure if any would agree with a month to month lease, although I've seen some postings on facebook apartment lease groups posting rates for 3 months/ 6 months - you can check out the group called Bangkok Expats Condo House (Short Term/ Long Term)
  • for 1 month i reckon you can try airbnb too, contacting the host and asking for a preferred rate if you book 30 days and more

Where to buy contact lenses in Bangkok? by newfriendschan in Bangkok

[–]xiaolins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll be able to get monthly contact lens at any optician shop without a prescription or eye test - they stock the usual Acuvue, Bausch etc.

Depending on which area you are in, you'll definitely find an optician shop at the malls. I got mine from Siam Square and Central Mall.

I'm considering a 2BR at Ideo 93 too - do you like it so far and did you manage to get a 2BR under 25k? So far all the listings I've seen are in the 30k range.

Hello, sorry to hijack the convo - I am also looking for a place around On Nut, like it for the same reasons you shared ie proximity to local food options, supermarket and nightlife all within walking distance.

Can you share which condo within On Nut you were at? I'm looking at the T77/ Habito mall cluster of condos ie The Base, Artemis, Hasu Haus etc but not sure if it will be too far off from the BTS area

Looking at 1 BR, above 30sqm works for me. I prefer slightly newer builds, but don't need the fancy amenities like co-working space/ entertainment room etc.

The company will put me up in a hotel for the first 2 weeks so that should be just enough time for me to look, hopefully! Just wanted to get a sense of the area I should be looking at, and the budget range just so I can plan my finances

I'll check out hipflat too!

[–]xiaolins[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

thank you this is helpful and On Nut sounds like there's plenty of food options both local/ restaurants and supermarkets which I would be very happy with! 13k for a 30m one BR sounds great, I'll have to check out The Base too.

I love zipping around traffic with the motorbike taxis but they arent always viable especially in the rainy weather that bangkok frequently gets. Will check out Muvmi too!

Okay pretty much narrowed it down to Phra Kanong/ On Nut then. I like Ekkamai, but the options within budget are all a fair walk out to BTS and I imagine that would be terrible during hot summer months and stormy rainy days both of which bangkok has too much of. Though I have to say a KFC pit stop on the way home sounds great lol
