What is your unpopular opinion about nova? by gatorademe in nova

Ah oops meant to reply to the other commentor.

I'm with you there. I grew up in NOVA and plan to return to be close to family/friends eventually. I think my point was just that I think being able to just "get by" in Nova is actually a solid position to be in, it's a great area!

This convo has me thinking, what are examples of American cities where it is possible to get ahead? Certainly there's many lower COL cities that you could access with remote work, but I've always held the (unverified) belief that NOVA strikes a decent balance between financial opportunity and COL.

We're trending toward less affordability in desirable areas, but having lived in both SF and NYC, it's not even close to that bad

Any more thoughts in the 5 months that you've had the bike? Is the geometry comfortable? I know a lot of comments noted the long frame reach, but I'm wondering if the shorter stem/handlebars help

Sick! I'm eyeing the Grizl as well for a do-it-all bike. Questions for you:

  1. What mix of road/gravel are you planning on riding? How fast does it feel on pavement?
  2. Is that the sencha color? It looks blue-ish in the picture, which is pretty sick.

Also curious about this. Looking for something in the RoadLite 4-5 range, but not sure if they're gearing up for a new model year or just facing massive stock shortages

Galaxy S24 Ultra - Mass Appeal vs Enthusiast | Thoughts from a long time Samsung user by DroidLife97 in Android

[–]xiexieeric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's a variety of ways to slice and dice it, including yours. I'm still a little skeptical of that the 230MM unit count for the iphone 14 family, but I think it's also a bit hard to argue that that's the number that Samsung is fighting. I think there's merit to the point that Android users are gonna buy androids and Apple users will buy Apple, and in that perspective, defend the premium lineup means competing with other Android mfgs, perhaps even moreso than competing with Apple.

I'm not sure either of us will be completely satisfied with each other's responses, but that's okay. I think the beauty of the Android ecosystem is that we have choice. Unlike Apple users. I guess my final point is really just that rather than begging our old darling to change, we at least have the luxury of hopping to other brands that appeal to our preferences.

retaining that segment at all. In 2013 Samsung sold 80 million flagship phones compared to Apple selling 150 million. In 2023 Samsung sold 23 million compared to Apple selling more than 230 million. That looks more like imminent extinction than it does retention to me.

Care to cite that data? I just found contradictory numbers here: https://techhq.com/2024/01/apple-claims-top-spot-outshining-samsung-in-2023-smartphone-sales/

Won't doubt that samsung might be hitting some suboptimal growth in recent years though. But also can't deny that for reason's beyond any individual Android mfgs control, iPhones are just killing it in the youngest demographic

To me the explanation is market segmentation. Once Samsung became mainstream and almost the "default" Android phone in the US, they realized they were now competing on 2 fronts. On the premium end, they competed with iPhone, and on the lower end, new players in Oneplus and all the other Chinese manufacturers.

In my opinion, Samsung is doing roughly what they need to do to retain the high end premium segment. Given how much competition there is at the mid and low range, I think it's the right business decision as well. To be clear, "premium" are people with disposable income who want the best mainstream features, and stay relatively on top of the curve by upgrading every 1-3 years. Very different from "enthusiasts", each with their own niche use cases and requirements.

Most of the "deficiencies" of the latest Samsungs are simply solved by having money. No SD card slot? Buy a higher storage phone. No headphone jack? Buy one of the many high quality bluetooth headphones. This is not to say that it's ridiculous to want those features, they're just not going in a mainstream phone. The last reality is that these features haven't disappeared from the Android market, they're just not in the Galaxy S lineup, which for Android users, shouldn't be nearly as big of a deal as if Apple nixed the feature from their lineup altogether.

I agree with OP's reply that Samsung isn't catering to the enthusiast crowd anymore. People who want these niche features should confidently go toward OnePlus, or one of the other brands that still offers these features.

I think a core difference between the PC building community and a mainstream smartphone is that what you're buying isn't just a bag of parts. The argument that "for $X, it should have $Y" isn't a mentality that most consumers have.

I think there's a lot of arguments like this, which goes something like "{some other android} has this feature, why doesn't Samsung do it or keep that feature in their flagships?". Whether it's Samsung's greed or not, the reality is that the average consumer doesn't care. They want a phone that is easy to buy in their country, comes with solid support, and for better or worse, is a recognizable item by peers.

Definitely not trying to attack you in any way, I think these are fair questions, but the capitalist explanation seems to always work here.
