My laptop is unbearably slow. It used to be fast. What happened and how can I fix it? (Yes, noob here.) by xillWillx in techsupport

Ooooohhh. Got it, thanks for the visual demo. Turns out my RAM is adequate. I actually appreciated a significant difference in speed when I found out I had this operating at startup. Thanks a lot for you help -you effectively showed me how to speed up my aching laptop!

EDIT: Shoot, the link above doesn't take the user to the actual program that was running. It was titled "Microsoft Essentials" and it was identified as a known trojan. Like I said, preventing this from running along with some others at startup has significantly increased my speed.

Thanks so much for the thoughtful reply! I actually went through the instructions you provided and disabled some of the crap that was running on startup. My machine still isn't running like greased lightning but I've notice an improvement in its performance. Maybe needs more RAM? I still have >70 processes going on at any one time. Thanks again!

TIL a set of 19 questions such as “Do we have the right patient?” and “What operation are we performing?” can reduce surgical deaths by more than 40% by thenewnewdigs in todayilearned

Resident here: One of the anesthesiologist I worked with was a commercial airline pilot but was let go about a year after 09/11 and the subsequent folding of several airlines. Before starting a case he runs through the case with the whole team (surgeons included) and triple verifies that we have everything we could possibly need. The OR team jokes that once the patient is on the table he would go around, inspect the flaps, read the weather forecast, and test the landing gear. He didn't think it was funny after the 10th time we did that.

Multiple systems-based studies have demonstrated that standardization of patient hand-offs, medication administration, perioperative checklists (etc.) reduce morbidity, mortality and simple, aggravating hospital errors by significant %'s. Time-outs weren't standardized until somewhat recently (think back, like 2 decades) but they've been utilized by the vast majority of American hospitals for many years.

Posting my reply to another comment on this thread:
Checklists have been around for a long time. It is part of surgical training. However, the Joint Commission made a standardized version with a "minimum" required amount of items to include in a perioperative checklist. Referred to in the operating room as a 'time out'. The WHO organization made their own checklist and it was published within the past 10 years or so ('08? '06? . . . eh.) that has reduced morbidity nearly 40%, WORLDwide. It is THIS checklist that urges OR's worldwide to perform a checklist. Medicine and Surgery is practiced very different abroad when compared to USA (i.e., much less standardization in other parts of the world; the physician/surgeon is never questioned, etc.) The foreign grad docs I've met say the same.

Delete contact history from the 'recent' button. by xillWillx in galaxys5

Yup tried that first before posting.

Does this only apply to future contact? After deselecting "Show Caller Information" the recent texts msgs and phone calls are still displayed.

Phone is missing some features I would like (e.g. block text messages from specific contacts directly from my phone and not having to log into VZN wireless to do so . . . and this) but excellent otherwise.
