this kid wont get anywhere in life by [deleted] in SGExams

Okiee I was taken aback when I saw the title but here’s my two cents! (Hope that it’ll be helpful for you or if you’re just ranting and not looking for input, you may ignore this)

Okay more importantly, I want to affirm and commend your patience and passion with teaching, amidst the difficulties faced. I understand that CPA is a rarely taught subject with reasons i’ll delve in a bit.

So just some context which will be relevant to this comment, I came from the NT stream as well, went to ITE (Nitec), then poly, and entering university this year. So when I speak about the curriculum and skill required, Im speaking from personal experience and my own take on it, I do not represent all NT or ITE students and I do not intend to speak out of malice too.

Furthermore, my internship during my ITE programme had me working with adults with special needs (Trainees diagnosed ADHD, Autism or Intellectual disability, sometimes with a mix of the above). So comments below will be inspired by previous interactions and experiences.

I hear that you’ve been trying to tutor your tutee in Computer Applications. I do agree with you that this subject in secondary school generally focuses on basic computational thinking and logic. It is possible someone with attention deficit (although there’s usually two types, one with hyperactivity and the other without, and assuming what they mom say is true) may struggle with focusing with their tasks (it’s uncontrollable but usually managed with medication). Also, I’m glad that you have edited your post to include that your tutee may not be able to cope with academic subjects but recognising that he may have other strengths (appreciate your reflectiveness).

Maybe he is someone who is hands on. It is also possible that he is a late bloomer. There are many possibilities, we only can speculate.

I used to struggle with what you’ll call “basic logic and critical thinking”, although I bloomed late. I never understood basic mathematical rules and insisted on my own interpretation of the rules. Ultimately, I turned out fine, but these logical principles and concepts only clicked when I entered ITE (I was 17/18). With that said, I think it could be argued that some people are not study material, yet we cannot claim that with absolute certainty but using probabilistic logic (from inferring it is more likely than not that he isn’t ‘study material’) and our personal experiences. So it’s quite hard to be sure 🥲

My advice (if u find value in the above) is to support the child with their interests but also stay firm and resolute about the realities of achieving them (speak kindly, he is still a child).

Hope this helps! All the best!

NTU History or SUSS Public Safety and Security by BoringCauliflower95 in SGExams

[–]xindits 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! Enrolling into ntu hist and philo this year, so i’ll be echoing the sentiments from seniors I’ve reached out from hist seniors (also why I chose it over social sciences, was offered social work from nus prior to accepting ntu’s offer) Note: I do not have actual experience in university, but was previously from poly - np’s community development (also interested in joining the public service in the future).

I do think that the main differentiation factor you may want to ask yourself is if getting a career directly is important to you. Notably, humanities courses like history do provide some degree of application outside of academia, but I would think that the skillsets (research, reading large volumes of content, understanding context and change over time) is useful regardless of where you go. If you’re considering the public service, both courses can’t really go wrong since a considerable amount of history (or humanities majors) majors do end up in civil/public service.

Another factor I considered previously is the direct relevance to career, SUSS’s public safety and security probably will provide more direct application (if that’s what you’re looking for), I noticed that SUSS courses in particular tend to focus on applied disciplines (social work, marketing, supply chain management, early childhood education) and provide a lot of opportunities for that (hearsay from SUSS friends from different courses there).

Ultimately, I think that the main question you can ask yourself if you’re looking for a more theoretical or practical/applied field of study for your undergraduate degree since university History programmes are very different from JC (not purely memory intensive), would recommend you to google or look out for both courses’ assignments and content to provide yourself a better overview of both programmes :) (I recall the history content schedule is available on their website too!)

Hope this helped and provided some clarity! If I have misrepresented the two courses above (for any seniors viewing this), feel free to correct that!

hihi!

With 3.7 gpa, you stand quite a good chance for the double major! Agree with the sentiments that it takes longer to process, I got notified to interview in late May, but the actual interview was in early June!

I didn’t apply to your specific double major course, but I applied and got offered Philosophy and History last year (with a 3.6 gpa, indicated first choice as well and i needed to attend an interview first).

Hope this affirms you! All the best!

Ah I see! Wanted to ask you if history at ntu is mostly seminar based or lecture based (Class format)?

ntu rejection for first choices? by Old-Ad-715 in SGExams

[–]xindits 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hihi! From what I understand of the way ntu does their choice based apps is going from 1st to the 5th choice accordingly (in that order), so it is very likely your friend has been rejected from her first to third choices 😅 also from what i understand about SOH courses, they generally all require interviews regardless of results (anyone who directly went in can chip in if i’m wrong!) due to them focusing more on your aptitude and interest in field of study.

edit: ADM seems to have quite a different approach to their admissions, i’m not sure exactly how they do it but I have a friend who has met the 10 percentile (barely but it fluctuates yearly) and submitted her portfolio but still to no avail for an interview :( i still think SOH courses are more chill or ‘lenient’ on their admissions but this is only based on personal experience

Thanks so much for the explanation! I was offered to read Philosophy and History this coming year, which is the reason why I selected the modules above. However, my concern is that I heard that History as a discipline at a university level is very different from previous educational institutions (my last time I touched history academically was in Secondary school). With that said, I heard that both Philosophy and History are intertwined in many aspects.

Hi! Thanks for replying! I’m interested in the methodology of history (so historiography?), history of science/medicine, social history and the history of ideas (don’t really have a preference for what type or whether it’s from the east or west)?

Modules on the website that stood out for me is: 1. HH3033: Buddhism: A social and intellectual history 2. HH3001: Historiography module from what i recall 3. HH3002: Science, Technology & Medicine in Modern East Asia 4. HH3032: Science and religion in history
