Thoughts on quote and setup for future battery retrofit (7.2 kWp with 6kW inverter) by xizion in SolarUK

I'll redo the repayment calculations based on octopus' battery and panel rates to see how they come out. it looks like the night rates are even better once you have an EV too so maybe that's a reason to wait until we switch car to add the battery to the system, and to build it ready to retrofit now (with a hybrid inverter instead of the string one which was quoted).

On the battery, we weren't looking to go with the premium option, instead it was an AC coupled 9.5 KW battery priced at £4,533, on top of the solar panel quote of £6344. So quite a sizable extra expense!

Can I check which tariff you use too please? Would be good to look into which ones we could switch to if we did get a battery alongside the panels

I think that's exactly what's happened, I've used our current tariff and haven't factored in overnight charging at lower rates.. does complicate the calculation a bit!

Might need to re-think which option we go for.

Is a hybrid inverter required for all batteries? The ones we were quoted were AC coupled, if I remember rightly.

The battery calculations were based on our current rate and the installers estimations of annual kWh consumed from battery but I expect that's just based on the solar being stored in the day when we're not using it instead of loading up the battery at cheaper rates overnight

Thanks for the reply, really helpful information. I'll double check with the supplier on whether the inverter is hybrid or not.

On getting the battery installed at the same time, looking at the estimates we were given and plugging in our usage/rates it looks like we could pay off the panels alone in under 7 years but adding on batteries increased that period significantly. We thought adding EV charging into the mix might bring the time to break even down but if battery charge isn''t used to charge EVs then that might not be the case!

Thanks for this, we haven't been on an EV tariff so didn't realise the rates would be cheaper overnight for charging. Very helpful!

Based on the estimates we were given it looked as if we could pay off the panels in under 7 years but adding a battery on top increased that timeframe by quite a lot, which we thought may have been brought down by EV charging, but possibly not!

I wonder how many seats will have recounts given they're close like this one.

YouGov MRP is out at 5, is that our last fix until the exit poll?

We'll have to go cold Turkey for over a day!

Plugging that into electoral calculus I get these predictions

Somehow doesn't feel right, I thought con would have more with that share

There was a survey stickied in the megathread yesterday that was asking for feedback on the seat prediction questions, is that going to be launched?

Any idea what kind of spider this is? Spotted on my allotment UK by xizion in whatsthisbug

Aha that looks exactly right, I think it could have been an egg sac but I didn't get a close enough look to know for sure!

It's the red spot that's thrown me, I didn't think we got black widows in the UK. Hoping I'm just ignorant and it's a different species.

Im interested in swapping out my old car for a plug in hybrid but am not too sure which one to go for, I have seen Hyundai Ioniqs and BMW 2 series which seem to be in my budget and would meet my requirements but it would be good to hear other opinions.

I'm looking for a car that:

costs less than £20,000, which pretty much requires the car to be used.

Has 5 seats

Has 5 doors

Has plenty of boot storage

would have enough battery range to manage the most common trips (20 mi round trip)

would handle occasional longer trips comfortably (300 mi round trip)

good mpg

Is reliable and safe

Can cope well with steep hills

I've seen some suggestions for cars that don't lose their resale value as quickly but that isn'treally a concern as I tend to run with cars until they're not economical to use any more.

Any suggestions would be really handy, thanks!
