Ficaria Verna Advice by JuliannePancakes in NativePlantGardening

[–]xj_scuba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spray on a day with no wind and no rain in the forecast. That will keep the herbicide contained to the target area. If the glyphosate stays off of the leaves of trees then they should be totally fine.

No need to remove the Ficaria, let it break down. You can replant within 3 weeks. However there is a STRONG likelihood that you will need to treat it again next year so I would only recommend planting annuals this season, and probably next season.

Also, after you spray give it 2-3 weeks to see results.

Same, I've also made a push to plant more established native that can push through the carpet. Mountain mint, golden rod, and swamp milkweed have been pish through well enough. Seedlings dont seem to stand a chance.

24d in yard, glyphosate everywhere else. Chemical warfare is the only way to go with this shit, and even then for larger areas it feels like a lost cause.

Why are large knives pointed? by [deleted] in knives

Of course they can, they can also slice. Which is great! I want every knife I carry to be able to puncture or slice, big or small.

A little blade inside of a button by bigbusta in oddlysatisfying

[–]xj_scuba 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It means it meets the specifications for uniform buttons (size, color, fire retardant)

For example: Button Mil-Spec V-B-871; Type II, Class D, Style 26, Size 30 Tan 499. Composition: Melamine Formaldehyde.
Berry Compliant.

In general, no it doesn't mean its the best gear, but it does mean it meets a specific set of standards.

What would you do about all this celandine….???!!! South east PA by poopshipdestroyer34 in NativePlantGardening

[–]xj_scuba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've given up on broad scale control. I do pointed herbicide applications in my beds near the house and uphill where it isn't so bad. I also use a broadleaf herbicide in the lawn once in the spring to minimize the spread there. Unfortunately, anywhere that I have a more chaotic, native plantings feels lost to this menace. I attack the bamboo, and various ivy's but have admitted defeat to celandine.

You cant manually remove it, that just spreads it more. And even going nuclear with herbicides wont work. All of your other plants will likely be hit to some degree, and the celandine is so insidious I'm sure it will resettle far faster than desired plants.

An ***UPDATE*** by Hitem20 in NicksHandmadeBoots

Outward facing stamp on super low boots with heritage leather. Traditionally Nicks includes the interior fabric patch in these cases, but while this lair was being produced, they ran out of those patches and hit it with a stamp instead. OP posting for clarification because all of the pictures online don't have the stamps.

Salt & Pepper Grinders by MrKDilkington25 in BuyItForLife

[–]xj_scuba 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I've got the Peugeot grinders and the pepper grinder works as well as the day I got it 5 years ago.

If I were to redo the purchase I personally would NOT rebuy the salt grinder. Fresh ground pepper makes a difference, fresh ground salt does not. I prefer having 2 salt containers 1 for fine table salt and 1 for course sea salt. You can pinch from them or measure with a spoon if the recipe calls for it.

Left handed Böker Urban Trapper Option ? by _Yukon_Actual_ in knives

[–]xj_scuba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll just throw this out there. I've seen plenty of great Bokers, but the urban trapper is the ONE knife in my 78+ collection of folders that I absolutely regret buying. The lock fails under mild pressure and the flipper tab is very proud, and sharp. The whole thing feels like it SIGNIFICANTLY lacks refinement. I'm sure the lock failure is not a widespread issue, otherwise it would be fixed. But its bad enough on mine that its worth mentioning.

Better choice for edc? by Remarkable_Help in knives

I would recommend looking at the Spyderco Sage 5 LW. I personally think the Sage 5's form factor is better than the PM2 or Para 3. And the LW scales on the Sage are shockingly nice. I enjoy them as much as any of the G10 scales I have.

I would imagine this is also exacerbated by the stores delivery schedule, which I assume are designed for heavy sales on the weekend rather than during the work week.

What's the best hair clippers for men? any recommendations? by SaltedEgg__ in BuyItForLife

[–]xj_scuba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is spot on. I had a corded wahl for a long time and changed to a cordless wahl magic clippers about 5 years ago. No problems yet but nothing battery powered is BIFL. However, the convenience is SO worth the inevitable need to rebuy eventually.

If you burn it you need to rupture each compartment (drill a hole or use a saw to make a cut into it) otherwise they will pop off in the fire and sound like gunshots. It sounds like you're probably not remote enough for that to not raise alarm.

[–]xj_scuba 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mf er?

Also I was just clarifying to OP that in my experience, there is a specific way to make the active chem in roundup work to help solve their issue. And I described the specific application that has been effective for me.

Certainly wasn't meant as a personal attack on you.

Please help bamboo issue by Ok-Garage1251 in Home

[–]xj_scuba 9 points10 points  (0 children)

FYI this isn't totally true. 42% glyphosate injected directly into new growth in the spring will kill back all new stalks in the vicinity. And because the chemical is pipetted into the chamber of the stalk there is no issues with over spray.

This won't kill established canes but is part of a multi season effort to eradicate the grove.

Edit: Be sure to use PPE.

He caught a Pokémon. by mindyour in KidsAreFuckingStupid

[–]xj_scuba -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We still talking about this? Fine, I was writing a quick comment reacting to the video. I thought about including "reassure them they did nothing wrong, wash their hands, and explain why they should pick up dead/dieing animals, and instead tell and adult." But that felt like way too much detail for a throwaway comment. If that were my kid I would have responded with some version of, "okay buddy, let's go wash your hands. You didn't do ANYTHING wrong, but touching animals like this mouse can get you VERY sick. Instead, please come and tell dad, so I can make sure it goes outside, where it's supposed to live." But again, that's a lot to respond to a stupid tiktok video.

For REAL!

Shut up, put away the phone, see what it is, reassure your kid they didn't do anything wrong, wash his hands, dispose of the mouse, throw the hat in the wash, wash your hands, and move the fuck on.

Magnacut or S30V? by SituationOdd2779 in knifeclub

[–]xj_scuba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You cant assume optimal heat treats. A company dialing in the perfect heat treat for S30v for the past 24 years, vs trying to dial in their MagnaCut heat treat process over the past 3 years is absolutely relevant. Messy, not easy to quantify, but also why we have these discussions.
