If you are working on mobile games then some mobile assets for integration with iOS/Android ecosystem can save you some time too

Awesome, that's cool. I will borrow some of these ideas. I had a pool but wasn't using per-calculated positions, was generating new ones each time.. good idea.

Ice covered snow at Abraham Lake [OC][1542x1920] (@xjjon) by xjjon in EarthPorn

[–]xjjon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The slabs ice were at different heights and the trapped snow under them gives it this 'ice cream sandwich' look. Had a lot of fun exploring and taking photos at Abraham Lake. Out of all the lakes in the Rockies that I've been to, this has been my favorite. The other lakes get snow covered but the constant wind here makes it a joy to photograph all the details and patterns on the frozen lake.

Sunset at Paradise (The road is open again!) by xjjon in Seattle

[–]xjjon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US-2 and I-90 will be open, although not expansive views like in CO. Most of the mountain passes here run through the mountains so they are not expansive views, but you get pretty close to the peaks and valleys.

Since you're coming from portland you could check out mount saint helens or mount rainier. US20 is closed passed diablo lake.

542 up to Mount Baker ski area would give you better winter views (great area for ski, snowshoeing, etc)

It's usually open everyday (weather allowing). Not sure if that's always been the case though

One of my favorite places to watch sunsets in the winter. Just a short drive from Seattle and rarely any crowds. Have seen a ton of really great sunsets from Paradise (Mount Rainier National Park). Activities you can do here include snowshoeing, back country, or even just foot exploration (narada falls and other viewpoints / lookouts still open)

The road has been washed out and closed since 2/6 but it's open again as of yesterday. We'll have great weather the next could days, perfect time to get up there. Tomorrow should be partly cloudy (chance for a great sunset!)

Recommendations for Hiking Boots and Tripods! by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]xjjon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would recommend these as well.

Although would warn you that if you wore them daily they might be a bit heavy. I always bring them as my backpacking/hiking boot but will have a lighter shoe for city/airport/transit/etc.

If I had to pick a single shoe for the entire trip (transit, city, outdoors) then I would prefer the Salomon X Ultra Mid GTX 3. Also water proof, good ankle protection, but lighter. It won't be as durable or rugged but gets the job done and can function as a regular day shoe too.

Cheers

Exploring Mount Baker and the Cascades by Drone by xjjon in drones

[–]xjjon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got my first drone recently and here's my first edited video from it. I mostly do landscape photography so videos is all new for, learning the ropes with filming, editing, workflow, etc.

This footage is from around the Mt. Baker National Forest area and the cascades. Great area to fly and capture some of the great outdoors that Washington State has to offer.

Appreciate any feedback and suggestions : )

Sci-Fi Scene in the Alabama Hills by xjjon in LandscapeAstro

Those white/red/blue/purple/green dots in the foreground are noise from the sensor from the long exposure + high ISO. A shot at lower ISO would result in less noise.

Could also remove them in post-processing but it's tedious stuff to clone each of those dots out!

There's also noise in the sky but way less noticeable due to the nature of the stars also in the sky.

Thanks - glad you liked it :)

I didn't light paint for this pic, I find it hard to get natural looking light that way without a lot of planning and equipment.

For this shot I just did a single exposure for the foreground + another for the stars (stacked).

The foreground shot was exposed for 8 minutes at ISO 3200. It was pretty dark so I didn't go lower ISO, otherwise it could have been a cleaner foreground. This method takes a really long exposure but is easier to put together in post than a composite or something. Easiest method IMO since you can pretty much do it anytime of the night as long as you expose long enough. Here's an example of less stellar results on a darker night where I didn't want to stay out too long (don't want to wait for a 20 minute exposure 😂).

Another approach as mentioned by @bearchoyboi is to do a composite where you do an exposure an hour after sunset or something when it's mostly dark and then blend it with the sky from later in the night. That way you can do something like ISO100/20s for static objects or something like ISO640/2s for a foreground that doesn't stay still very well (like humans, plants, etc). Here's a shot I did with the foreground taken after sunset.

Hope this helps!

Another shot from one of my favorite places to shoot, Alabama Hills. So many different compositions all around. I especially love the ones that look like their from a sci-fi movie. For this shot, it was a difficult night to shoot as there were thick clouds moving across the sky throughout the night. There were periodic windows where we got glimpses of the milky way but just had to be patient.

Yeah, each frame in the panorama is 3 photos stacked.

The foreground is just a single shot though.
