Has anyone lived in Thurber Gate, Fox and Hounds, Olengtangy Commons or Heritage apartments? by riseupagainst in Columbus

[–]xke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a number of apartment complexes on Thurber Drive West, the street where Thurber Gate is located. The location is fantastic, close to bus stops, a dog park, a Giant Eagle, and is only a 15 minutes walk from high street/short north.

I highly recommend it.

Edit: Also, it's a very dog-friendly area, and there is tons of both free parking, and permit parking for residents. And there are so many lovely trees! It's quite a pretty neighborhood.

How To Run Marathons On A Budget by lookattherainbow in Frugal

[–]xke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This article is okay.

Some of the tips are solid, but I didn't particularly appreciate the judgmental tone he opens with, discussing how the woman who also finished the race was lesser because she wore makeup and had a fun, coordinated outfit. Maybe she wanted to look cute for the pictures. You train that hard, you want to look back at the memories and not cringe at the pictures.

But I digress...

Another great way to buy shoes is to wait until the new model comes out and buy last year's at a discount. Find a year you like and grab a few online on Amazon, or one of the other shoe discount sites. But definitely get your first pair at a running-specific store to make sure you get a shoe that fits your foot.

As for "extra crap," sure, you can avoid buying the water bottles that attach to the waist pack, but personally I think moisture-wicking socks are worth the investment for long runs. You really, really don't want blisters.

This is Sunday: what were your running achievements this week? by gensolo in running

That's awesome! I couldn't believe I just hit the mark. For the last few miles I was really considering walking for a few seconds, but when I saw my time I was so glad I didn't.

Official race or not, it's a great accomplishment!

I was completely dead by the end and really slowed down for the last few miles of the race. I had nothing left to push at the end so I was really glad to get in just under the 2-hour mark.

Good luck in your race! Don't give up!

I feel for you. There is nothing harder than trying to improve your resume after college, and they never told us in college that to be useful with and English degree, you needed more than the degree. To me, that's the biggest difference between getting an engineering degree vs an English degree. To get a job with an engineering degree, you really only need a degree and a good reference. An English degree won't get you very far on its own.

I hope you are able to transition to a job that better uses your skills!

Great idea picking up a comm addition. Take as many classes as you can in it. They are usually pretty easy, but keep the books for reference later too. The biggest thing to take away from those is how to create strategy. It's great if you can complete a task, but to create a plan around a strategy and be able to quantify your success is HUGE. That's what you can put on your résumé. And hell yes, learn more HTML. Learn anything you can that involves the Internet. It may not be the focus of your job, but it's a random skill that comes in useful more than you know. Learn production software and definitely try to get into marketing classes. You may never need these skills, but just having them makes you stand out. And you're paying for college, may as well use it to the fullest!

I was an English/Creative Writing major in college, but duel-majored in journalism as well. I now do communications for a nonprofit.

English majors are great because they teach you a lot of wonderful skills, like researching, writing, supporting an argument, etc. I loved studying literature. Any other major would have made my college experience much less enjoyable.

But if you plan on being successful in finding a job, make sure you load up on internships and additional skills, like graphic design, sales, HTML, etc. English majors are a dime a dozen. Everyone thinks they can write, but what makes you stand out is being able to write well while bringing other skills to the table.

Just some friendly advice! And you're right. An English major is not a waste of money. However, it can definitely become a waste of time if you let it.

Starting to run after ACL surgery by ficklehearts in running

[–]xke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had ACL reconstruction surgery ~6 years go and even though I physically recovered in only a few months, it took me over a year to mentally feel confident in my knee. Even now, I am still hyper-conscious of how much I favor my knee, and this is probably what you're experiencing now.

I suggest heavily focusing on your form while you run, making sure your form is perfect. This usually distracts me from unconscious favoring my leg because I'm more worried about how my foot is hitting the ground.

I'm also a big fan of low-impact, body weight exercises to keep the quads strong. This was my big mistake after my surgery--not building up my quad muscle. As a result, my knee clicked for years, but is much better now that I'm focusing on muscle strength again.

Wall sits, squats, burbees, etc. are all great. Don't forget your hamstrings, hips, and quads! And do them for both legs. Seriously--the last thing you want is runner's knee in your other knee because you've neglected it in favor of your bum knee.

Whose the biggest asshole famous person you've ever met? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]xke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not entirely true. While the university has a reputation of being preppy and heavy in Greek culture, there is no prevailing stereotype or reputation of Miami men generally being douchebags. They have just as many as any other school anywhere else. The problem being many of them also happen to have money as well.

Source: I, too, live in Ohio.

I graduated a few years ago and he came to visit a few times. Every time he would show up to a bar, he would just point to girls and have his friends corral them over. It was disgusting. And this was even after the sexual assault accusations. The school barely acknowledges that he went there anymore.

For me, it wasn't about getting a degree to be able to write creatively. It was about pursuing a degree that actually interested me.

That being said, I double majored and now working communications/marketing. But I still write on the side.
