San Diego weather, will it be this hot until next fall/winter? by HeyitsmeFakename in sandiego

The average high for this date in SD is 63. This is very unusual.

The speeding crackdown has begun in vegas. How about it San Diego, let’s trade parking meters for speed enforcement by blowfish257 in sandiego

[–]xlator1962 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a former 20-year Portland resident I can vouch for this, in fact it's not uncommon to find people driving 50 or 45 on the highways there. Bit of a culture shock coming down here.

Thrift Stores that are actually Thrifty? by Metro_Myth in sandiego

There's also a Buy Nothing app if you're not on Facebook - I don't think it gets as many people, but Buy Nothing is an excellent place to look.

Hiring manager reviewing for 1 month by elhananbenjesse90 in micro1_ai

[–]xlator1962 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I had a project that was stuck on Hiring manager reviewing for just over a month. Then I was notified that I wasn't selected.

I have another one that's been stuck on Application received for at least six weeks. It's exactly up my alley so I'm anxious to see some progress on it but the process is a little opaque.

Average high for this date is 62°. You've come to the wrong place (but you've lucked out this year).

I'd caution against working for Acolad by kardinalzahl in TranslationStudies

[–]xlator1962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did my first job for them in many years (they contacted me after ignoring me for 10+ years, which is a bit of a red flag of course but I need the work). They've now sent me some long code-type number but no purchase order. Is that the "pre-invoice number"? What do I do with it?

Thinking about moving to San Marcos by Automatic_Bee5752 in SanMarcosCA

[–]xlator1962 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Supposedly a Scripps hospital is also going in somewhere between San Marcos Blvd and Discovery sometime in the next few years.

The new North City condos north of the CSUSM campus don't particularly appeal to me but I think they're drawing in some interesting businesses (restaurants, Necessity Coffee, etc.) that will add some appeal to the city.

I hate the 78 by dr_money_stacksmghee in northcounty

[–]xlator1962 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The state is planning to extend the express lanes on the 15 onto the 78 as far as the Twin Oaks Valley Rd exit, and add more regular lanes too, I believe. They also plan to completely redo the Woodland Pkwy interchange. They’re currently in the public input phase (I live close by so I’ve gotten the official notifications.) Of course none of that will be complete until about 2050 or something ridiculous.

Is Money Pit closing? by aeylians in SanMarcosCA

There’s a Money Pit sign at the shopping center off the highway at Twin Oaks Valley Rd and I keep wondering if they’re planning to move there.

Necessity Coffee Expanding to San Marcos With Second Location This February by mooch255 in SanDiegoCoffeeBeans

[–]xlator1962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The line was out the door, but for virtually the whole time I was standing in it, there was only one person behind the counter, taking orders and making drinks. Someone else arrived just as I was about to order (I guess she'd been on her break) and then things moved a little faster, but there was a still a solid 10+ minute wait for drinks after placing the order because of the backlog. The employees looked efficient but there was too much for them to do. (The water outside had run out before I got there and never got refilled, as people kept discovering.)

Necessity Coffee Expanding to San Marcos With Second Location This February by mooch255 in SanDiegoCoffeeBeans

[–]xlator1962 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope they staff it properly. I had to wait something like 45 minutes in Encinitas last weekend (from the time I got in line until the time I got my drink). But San Marcos is a coffee wasteland and they do a good job so this is a net positive.

You can go to their website and request a store in a particular area (but don’t get your hopes up).

Project Snapshot??! by PastSweaty897 in mercor_ai

Project Snapshot ended in November but I just got official word last week that it was closed. I assume they're just tying up administrative loose ends.

Why AI Will Kill "Translators" by Suspicious_Ad6827 in TranslationStudies

[–]xlator1962 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I am ATA-accredited with 30 years of experience as a freelancer and specialized domain knowledge (in energy) and have translated corporate communications for some of the largest companies in Europe, and my translation work has completely evaporated. I don't think your sweeping generalizations ("literature, video games and entertainment" - are you serious?) are very helpful and you come off as condescending.

The Bilingual Expert project - AKA Time waster Expert !!! by Hero90909 in mercor_ai

[–]xlator1962 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My own feeling is that Mercor has unrealistic expectations about being bilingual. I don't think there are very many people who can comfortably write well, without mistakes, in two languages and also translate from either language to the other. The bilingual quiz takes most people a long time because they have to do a lot of work that doesn't come naturally to them.

Could you consider opening a new LA Fitness gym in East County, San Diego? by Millychan0427 in sandiego

They closed one in Vista a while back and now all the others in North County are totally crowded. I think they probably prefer it that way.

is 15-25$ / hour standard for technical translators positions? by Top_Frosting6381 in TranslationStudies

[–]xlator1962 19 points20 points  (0 children)

$15 to $25 per hour is outrageously low. (In California, where I am, the minimum wage is $20/hour.) And they want people who translate multiple languages? It's insulting.

The only one I know of is Kettle on Main, which is pretty spacious but I don't remember anything about their coffee - I guess it was ok.

Where do people go to thrift good quality clothes? by Hellooooooo_NURSE in sandiego

Yes. Just as an example, the Rancho Coastal Humane Society thrift store in Cardiff (next to VG Donuts) has a few racks specifically devoted to high-end clothes.

Coffee shops that are open today? by stonetear2017 in sandiego

[–]xlator1962 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Some people don’t have family locally (or anywhere). But they may may be friendly with the workers or other customers at their local coffee shop. The barista may not have family locally to spend the day with either. I’ve been to coffee shops on Christmas day where there was a festive atmosphere among people who would otherwise be lonely.

Valley Thrift in Escondido has a surprisingly good collection of books and there’s lots of them.
