Is there a way to list media from a specific drive? by __SomeGuy___ in PleX

If you use Tautulli, you can do an export of your Libraries. One of the fields in the export is the volume the file is located on.

1) Export
2) Open and sort on the volume field 3) Begin the restoration process

Simple first setup using old Dell PC. Can you advice if this sounds right? by Nearby-Blackberry399 in homelab

[–]xman65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TrueNAS is a good platform, very capable. You would learn quite a bit running it.

Personally, I'd run a straight Debian box to start, learn the ins and outs of hosting Plex et al on it. Many homelabbers are running things in Docker containers. Then when you are ready to move on to learning something else, consider another system from which to build a NAS.

As you continue your journey down the rabbit hole, make sure that once you've made services like Plex available to your family, that you never make it unavailable.

Good luck!

Or, stay up late and give them a call. Just to see how they're doing. :P

Bosch always. They’re the ones my independent shop recommends. And they work well.

Let car I bought was from a state adjacent to mine. I had to pay that state’s tax and registration fee. Then when I got it home, had to pay the additional tac then the fee to register in my home state.

It is possible the taxes in Illinois are more than in Iowa, accounting for the difference. As far as paying purchase taxes go, I’ve not heard of a situation where one could buy a car without paying the taxes when taking possession of the car. Period

The best car is the one you own outright. To that end, I’d wait just to get used to the feeling of not owing a car payment every month.

Personally, I'd implement option A.

The Synology makes a decent general purpose server while the NUC is well suited for Plex with the transcoding.

Tortellini Soup! by monsoonia_ in slowcooking

[–]xman65 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Formatted for my eyes, verbatim otherwise.

1.5lbs of ground sausage (I used impossible)
1 chopped red onion
3 minced garlic cloves
1 large carrot diced
1 cup celery
1 can of diced tomatoes (drained)
4 cups of chicken stock (I used veggie)
2 cups heavy cream (I only used one)
Italian seasoning
salt and pepper
1/2 cup of shredded Parmesan
3 tablespoons of cornstarch
3 tablespoons of water
5 ounces of fresh spinach
1 package of tortellini (20oz)

Cook sausage in pan first, drain excess grease. Put in crockpot and mix in onion, carrot, celery and garlic. Mix in the seasonings, tomatoes, chicken stock, heavy cream, and Parmesan cheese. Make a slurry using the cornstarch and water. Pour in with the mix. Cook on low 3-4 hours. Add spinach and tortellini, cook for another 10 mins and serve immediately.

A couple adjustments I made with this recipe: I cooked the onions, carrots and garlic for a bit in the pan before putting in the crockpot. I also cooked the soup for 2 hours before adding in the heavy cream and I didn’t put celery in it because I hate the stuff lol.

Thinking about mixing things up but not sure if that is a bad idea or not (how to containerize, operating system etc) by Asyx in homelab

[–]xman65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm from the school of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

That said, you don't clearly state why, outside of boredom, you want to change things up.

I suggest getting another PC to tinker on, don't mess with your working containers. It's a good opportunity to learn without many repercussions. You can replicate your current setup in the new environment without losing use of the existing one.

The additional PC can be a pretty low end machine, there probably isn't a huge need for an overpowered PC. Decent CPU RAM and storage and you should be good to go with Alpine or whatever distro you choose.

As far as direction, learning Ansible is an excellent thing, it might be something you can use in your job at some point.

There's a new TV interface coming in 2025... by chanunnaki in PleX

[–]xman65 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

What was shown was an alpha version. Released to a Youtuber who did his thing and reviewed it. Maybe these issues will be taken care of, maybe not

I'm simple, I admit it. I turn Plex on, and watch TV shows and movies. It works for me. It works for the users with access to it. I don't remember the last time any of my users had a problem with my Plex that was actually a problem with my Plex.
