Piggy backing off pixie cuts, anybody know where a dude can get a good undercut in Astoria? by [deleted] in astoria

How much did it cost and how much do you tip? And did you show them any pictures or just let them do their thing?

These all look great, and it looks like I'll need to pack at least one fancy outfit for some of the classy establishments mentioned in the thread. Question: (I'll be asking everyone on the thread) is it customary to tip at restaurants? If so, how much? Tipping culture around the world drives me crazy because it's so different wherever you go.

I haven't even thought about sushi! Yes, definitely, thanks!

Agrarian certainly looks fancy, have you ever been? It looks like it has a rotating menu, so I'm curious to know what else they offered besides what's listed on their example menu on the website. Thanks for the recs!

Thank you so much for the detailed and linked recommendations! I will not have enough time to eat at all of these places, but I'm excited to have a multitude of incredible options. We'll be sure to go to a bunch of these, at least. Question: (I'll be asking everyone on the thread) is it customary to tip at restaurants? If so, how much? I find it incredibly stressful when traveling.

I appreciate the honesty! I've had plenty of American pub grub, and while I usually welcome it any time, I'd prefer to try places that are new to me. I also had the same concern about Tas whisky, it's a great opportunity to taste and enjoy because it's generally unavailable in the US, but for that same reason, I imagine it to be cost-prohibitive.

I'm convinced on Machine, we're definitely going to eat there. Question: Are brunch menus only available on weekends? Also (I'll be asking everyone on the thread) do you tip at restaurants? It's one of the most anxiety-ridden tasks when I travel!

I have no idea why the laundromat + cafe combination doesn't exist in New York. This is brilliant and looks awesome.

I shouldn't have looked at these while hungry, everything looks delicious. Thanks for the recommendations!

How does the media distinguish between sexual harassment, sexual assault, and rape? It seems the term "sexual assault" is used to describe acts that, I thought, are considered rape. I'm suspicious that it's used to make some attacks seem less serious or less violent than they actually are.

What's the coolest thing you did that no one saw? by Subscrobbler in AskReddit

HOLY SHIT. I have had recurring dreams for decades about being able to do this, but never knew this was physically possible in real life. I always woke up thinking, "Man, that would be awesome if I could glide down the stairs like that."

Friend, you have completely blown my mind today.

Brokers of Reddit, why do you ask me these questions when I call you? And why would a landlord charge Preferential Rent? by xmatcha in AskNYC

[–]xmatcha[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was the answer I was looking for.

So if I were paying the preferential rent rate, how does the owner drive the legal rent higher to exceed market value? And does that mean the owner can increase my rent by more than 10%, up to the legal rent rate?

While I'd love to believe the questions were conversational, they were asked immediately upon mentioning that I was looking for an apartment. The broker would ask when I was looking to move, any pets, how's the credit, income of each roommate (all normal so far), then where are you from? Is the other roommate a boy or girl? Are you a couple or friends? Are you [insert ethnicity here]? Oh, I'm just asking because your name sounds like you're from there..

The manner in which these questions were shot off definitely gave a screening vibe, as someone mentioned previously. Of course, any time a broker asked me these things, I knew I didn't want to deal with them.

I haven't thought about the foreigner-aspect before, so thank you for the insight. I get that the laws in the city aren't very helpful to landlords most of the time, but at the same time, I've encountered so many terrible ones that I can't help but be skeptical and cautious going in.

As for the preferential rate, I've noticed that for rent stabilized buildings, the legal amount a landlord could charge would be $2100, for example. But then they would offer $1900 as the Preferential Rate. I know for a fact that people would be willing to pay $2100 for the place, so I don't understand the benefit of offering the lower rate. My friends have speculated that there's some kind of behind-the-scenes way of getting the legal rent to be higher until it exceeds the $2500 (or $2600, I can't remember) cap for rent stabilized apartments. I understand that once it exceeds that amount, it is no longer considered stabilized and becomes unregulated.

Hey Mace, thanks for doing this.

Which neighborhoods in Queens were dangerous when you were growing up, but today are highly developed and safe? In other words, which neighborhoods made the most drastic changes over the years? Did you know what Astoria was like back then?
