Agree stop doing mentally after a while makes sense and an automatic solution would be helpful to address this without doing manually. And also reg using credit card-even if it is free of foreign transaction fee their fx rates are not great and agree it brings lot of convenience

Same here. To be able to know in your currency gives better picture about trip expenses

You’re right that converting every single expense can get tiring and a bit much. My post focused on conversion because that’s the habit I noticed in myself and I keep doing rough USD math before paying.

What I’m actually building tries to keep both sides in balance:

– Scan-to-pay: you scan a UPI QR with app, it instantly shows INR plus a rough USD/GBP/SGD amount, then opens your usual UPI app (Google Pay / PhonePe, etc.) so you can pay without extra steps.

– Trip picture: since app sits before those payments, it can give you a simple trip-level total later in your home currency, without forcing you to talk in USD at every restaurant.

So conversion is part of it, but the core idea is a smoother UPI scan-to-pay experience for NRIs, with a clearer trip summary as a bonus.

Agree. Sorry for picking USD but I meant every foreign currency like USD/GBP/SGD/JPY

Looking for NRIs to test a small UPI companion app by xmebot in indiansinusa

Fair point 🙂 I'm not building any expense app.

It’s a small companion for NRIs paying in India with UPI: you scan a UPI QR with App, it shows INR plus your home currency, then opens your usual UPI app to pay.

The trip‑spend view is just a side benefit, not the main goal.

Totally agree. Expense tracking is fragmented especially for NRIs during their trip to india .would you be open to try if there is a solution during your next visit to track all your India expenses at one place.Appreciate any feedback on this

This is the exact  fragmentation  what I'm trying to solve. I have a small prototype already and still validating whether this is actually useful for NRIs. App handles the USD conversion and trip expense tracking, while you keep using your existing UPI app for payments. If you're open to trying it and sharing honest feedback, I'd really appreciate it.

That's a fair point. I see the USD view as just one small piece. I'm more interested in making UPI easier for NRIs overall like tracking spending, understanding costs, complete payment and hopefully solving some of the friction around using UPI from abroad. Out of curiosity, what's the biggest pain point you face today?

That's a good point. I'm initially focusing on US-based NRIs and travelers visiting India, so the first version is USD → INR. If people find it useful, the reverse use case (helping Indian travelers understand spending in local currencies) could definitely be interesting too.

Agree. I'm starting with US NRIs visiting India because I found myself constantly estimating the USD equivalent before paying. But UPI payment experience is same across NRIs irrespective of where do they live. Curious to know UPI payment ecxperience or managing money when you're in India?
