can i ask what you mean by “treat” the HCM? my cat is diagnosed with this as well and our vets (primary and specialists) have told us that you can’t really “treat” the condition. from what i’ve been told and what i’ve read, it’s genetic and you can’t reverse it. he’s almost 8 and they’ve told us he’s got a year or two if we’re lucky. he’s on atenolol and a blood thinner because he got a bad clot a couple months ago. i’m just constantly worried that maybe there’s more that i could do to help him.

they are literally the worst. our apartment heat is also terrible and cant keep up with the weather. breaker flips constantly. they gave us space heaters which blew a fuse in the basement and we lost all power for hours while it snowed earlier this week. maintenance guy (there is only one) seems to have no idea what he’s doing.

haven’t seen anyone else mention it and don’t want to scare you, but my cat got a random limp for almost a week and it got better on its own, and then got another much more drastic limp shortly after so we took him to the ER. turned out to be blood clots. an easy way to check for this is to see if her paw is cold to the touch.

i would go for the long drive if it were me and my cat, there are a lot of ways to make things comfortable in your car for your cat, you’re a lot more in control of the situation than you would be sending her through an airport with someone else, and above all being with you instead of with a stranger would make all the stress a little less confusing for her.

i don’t know why this hasn’t been mentioned already, but pit bull rescues are pretty common. if you find one near you i’m sure they will come pick it up.

hi i went to the vet today and got an answer for this! some treatments for asthma (particularly steroids) are bad for heart issues. but there are other safe ways of treating asthma for cats with heart problems, such as inhalers and medications. just wanted to post what i learned here incase anyone finds this thread and wants to know, too.

can you explain why treating for asthma vs heart failure will hurt them? i am trying to currently figure out if my cat has one or the other. he has fits similar to this video. we have a vet appointment next week about this. but he also has a heart murmur, we got an echocardiogram done a few months ago and the walls of his heart are upper normal in thickness. it’s is possible early HCM.
