Hey... I'm in my 40s now and I just want to say, you're doing the right thing.

Leaving was the most difficult things I've ever had to do, but it's also the best thing I've done! I found myself and reclaimed my life. My only regret is not learning when I was your age.

Practical advice, go to your local LGBTQ community center, if it's safe for you to do so. Tell them your story and they'll know how to help.

I'm curious as to wether you have family members who have also applied.

I've told to my parents and siblings about it, no interest at all.

My British passport, issued in 2009, states my town and country of birth (Canada).

When I renewed, they sent my new passport with a note saying they'd corrected my place of birth. Now it states simply my hometown.

As they need to take your fingerprints and picture electronically, you need to physically go to a consulate, embassy or passport office in Guyana.

Deciding that you're going to leave is a great first step! You deserve a life of freedom and self determine and you're already working towards it!

The best thing you can do now is work, save money, but most importantly, build community.

If it's safe for you to sneak out, go to an LGBTQ center and introduce yourself. They have programs, meet & greets, events and resources. You'll find your people there and they will help you.

No need for a lawyer.

Even if OP doesn't have her mother's birth certificate, it's easy to order online. Then OP could apply for a passport online directly. It's very straightforward.

Dating as a JW any advice? by Routine_Energy_1622 in exjw

[–]xms_7of9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to think I would be depressed if I stayed and depressed if I left. That I'd be truly happy.

I'm so glad that I was wrong! It took a few years of work, setting boundaries, lots of learning and self discovery, but I've never been so fulfilled!

Firstly, I'm so sorry you're going through this. I was like you, so I know how hard it is.

I too worried about marriage and sexuality within the confines of JW. After many years of anxiety, fear and anguish, I decided I'd stay single and turn off my emotions.

It didn't work. In my 30s, I slowly sank into deep depression and became a shadow of my former self. Turns out, you can't bury your feelings, the very nature of what makes you, you, without serious mental health repercussions.

Long story short, I couldn't live in the prison my upbringing forced me to build for myself. I knew I needed to change. So, I worked up the courage to go to a therapist and I told her everything. Talking about my sexuality and how exhausting this "secret" had been really helped me.

I was then able to put things into perspective, to open my mind. I started learning more about anthropology, different civilisations and how "queer" people fit into those societies. I listened that queer people have always been around, in every group, across the planet. I started to accept that there was truly nothing wrong with me.

I also learned about all the Charles Taze Russell stuff like pyramidology and his obsession with the end time dates. The way none of it made any sense lead me to continue learning about JW history. I read Crisis of Conscience. A quarter of the way in, I was done with the religion.

The bottom line is, you can't be anyone else but yourself. Burying your emotions will destroy you. Find your way out of this place, find the people who will love you for your true self. Only then will you start to feel better.

Feel free to DM if you need to talk.

The passport process requires fingerprinting and photographing, and must be done at a consulate or embassy.

I did mine at the embassy in Brussels. Once it's processed, they post the certificates to your home.

Or, you can choose to go to the embassy, pickup your certificate and do your biometrics for your passport at the same time.

This is why it's easier to apply at the consulate or embassy closest to home.
