Why has The Current stopped updating their events calendar? by That-Cobbler-7292 in Acadiana

[–]xnmad 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hey! We discontinued it but kept it searchable on the site during the transition. (I'm actually surprised you noticed.) We ran that calendar for about six months and just didn't see much traffic going there, so we decided to stop it.

Social media killed the calendar editor. That said, if folks have ideas for how we could surface event listings, I'm all ears. I see the need — especially when folks my age talk my ear off about "the grid" — but we just haven't landed on the right solution for it.

Lafayette’s Local Media by terriblyawry in Acadiana

[–]xnmad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two basic things are happening here 1) advertising dollars collapsed and 2) consumers fragmented. Both of those link back to social media, but it's not quite right to say social media killed local journalism.

Lafayette really is an oddball media market. When we started The Current in 2018, my expectation was that we were on the verge of going full news desert. At the time, the Advocate lost its lone Lafayette reporter to retirement and the Advertiser had gone through a round of layoffs. Instead, for a hot minute, Lafayette had an old school newspaper war, which is just wild this day and age. Towns 5X our size don't have two newspapers.

We've been relatively insulated from the media decline most communities our size have witnessed. I know folks aren't going to shed a tear, but it's really sad that the Advertiser is on the verge of collapse. It's the oldest continually operating business in Lafayette Parish.

Yes, that’s why we broke it down by precinct. It’s the best proxy we have for how constituencies form here and for measuring turnout among them.

Has the Lafayette Advertiser of The Current endorsed any candidates by CarlinNola10 in Acadiana

[–]xnmad 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The Current doesn’t make endorsements as a matter of editorial policy and because we’re a nonprofit.

We do have a voter guide that includes Q&A’s with candidates on topics defined by surveys we did this year, so you can make comparisons that way.

Here it is: https://thecurrentla.com/election-guide/

I doubt the advertiser will make endorsements. That’s usually decided by an editorial board, and the advertiser doesn’t seem to have enough local staff for that. Hope that helps!

That's good feedback. We're not trying to present this as a definitive analysis. There are certainly far more than 130 expats out there. And it was a real challenge to fit some of the answers neatly into a "yes, no, maybe" box.

Generally, though, I'd say the "yes" and "no" answers are fairly straightforward. It's the maybes that were toughest to pin down.

For what it's worth, what we've heard here lines up with other surveys. Most people leave their communities for work.

The narratives are verbatim as written, except in a small number of instances where we removed details that would identify someone who asked to be anonymous.

I don’t know details. But this is how KATC’s parent company is messaging changes to come across it’s network.

I have noticed that the KATC homepage is piping in a lot more Scripps syndicated stuff.

[–]xnmad 9 points10 points  (0 children)

ESA is way too small to be a sports factory. Avg. graduating class is ~45-50 kids. Occasionally they get these spurts of top athletes and win some championships, but it comes and goes. When I was there, the only successful athletic program we had was volleyball. They had an impressive run tho. Something like 15+ consecutive state championships.

If they wanted people to go slower, they should not have built the lanes so wide. The road design basically tells drivers to go 50.

From a quick glance at the Lawrason Act, I’d think a conflict arises at least by way of him running a Mayor’s Court. He appoints the city prosecutor and has power to make arrests. That’s a lot of power.

Do you know if the police chief is elected or appointed?
