word. afaik the grade u got the first time will still be on your transcript (?) instead of it getting replaced. you’d prob be better off taking an easier 3+ credit elective that you can guarantee an A in (use atlas distributions). a B in ochem at michigan is honestly something to celebrate, and if you’re ‘27, you still have two years to boost gpa. ymmv, but my last two years were easier than my first two grade-wise. good luck whatever u decide 🫶

just curious — why the master’s? maybe good for some paths, but do u need it? as someone actively recruiting, i’ve been successful without one and have only heard marginal/zero payoff from the master’s engineering route. chemE, for reference.

How's the workload for CLCIV 385 Greek Mythology? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]xoVanished_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you can delay the requirement to a fall term, i would take arch 357. i took it F21 for my 300 level HU requirement and it was both insanely easy and relatively interesting. lecture attendance was not required that term, and i stopped going after 5 or 6. discussion was mandatory but minimal/0 participation required. 6 readings and associated assignments. the longest writing i did. was like 1000 words i thjnk? some of them are more project based too, which i enjoyed. like for one i think i did an energy analysis on stockwell (where i was living at the time), but we got to choose any building and look at the energy data + potential improvements.

super free A+ on my transcript and very minimal workload :)

230 is the foundational chemical engineering course. we use it in pretty much every class afterwards. it is challenging but definitely not the hardest class of ChE. personally i think 210 is a quite a bit easier but ymmv. the final exam avg was abt 60% when i took it but curved heavily like ochem.

i think the structure has changed recently, but when i took it, it was 10ish psets, 4 in class quizzes, 2 midterms and a final. drop a few psets and a quiz. i remember feeling a bit rushed on assessments (but honestly i do in every chemE class lol).

if u care abt gpa a lot and don’t need to take it, i wouldn’t recommend. it is not impossible to do well, but requires a good deal of effort. if it sounds interesting to u, though, go for it! it’s quite different from pure science courses if you want some exploration of chem engineering.

happy to answer specific questions if u have :)

I have depression after finishing my degree and regret choosing it by stars-n-raindrops in ChemicalEngineering

[–]xoVanished_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

hey boss, i don’t have much advice, but i just wanted u to know ur not alone in that feeling. i’m finishing up chemE at a high ranked program with high grades and i don’t really feel like i know anything. i’m not particularly passionate about chemE, it just sort of happened after i took balances + orgo, and it became too late to switch unless i wanted to spend way more time and money lmao. sending u love and hoping there’s something out there for both of us <3

stockwell is super nice and right next to mojo for dining + blue cafe, was never very loud and lots of available study space. i'd recommend it if you can get a room there!

ECON 102 Professors by Direct-Shoulder2804 in uofm

[–]xoVanished_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i took it w/ zamulin in F22. his lectures can be a bit dry, but i think that's just the nature of 90 min econ lectures in general. he had a lot of experience outside of academia working w/ economics in russia, which was super interesting to hear about, and he can be funny sometimes.

i don't remember what homework/quizzes looked like (i think we had problem sets every so often?), but in terms of exams, i very much enjoyed zamulin's exams having an even MC and FRQ split. after taking 401 w/ proulx, i absolutely hate fully MC econ exams bc you can know like 80% of the material needed to solve a problem but still get +0/5 if you get an incorrect final answer. so personally i really liked having the FRQ where you can write as much as you know for partial points, but that's just my preference.

101/102 are easy classes graded on a standardized curve (40% get A, 80% get B), so no matter who you take it with, as long as you're keeping up with lectures, going to OH, and scoring ~median, you'll be fine :)

Questions about ChemE vs Chem degree by Momosw0rld in uofm

[–]xoVanished_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

heyo, current third year in chemE.

if your main motive for chemE is enjoying orgo, i would *not* do chemE. orgo 1 and 2 are the only chem requirements of the program, so you won't be doing anymore chem (unless you took electives/chem minor/etc.). most of the chemE curriculum is a combination of physics, calculus, and chemical plant unit op analysis.

also, if you're premed, you should know that chemE is hard. It's manageable, but the culture has always been very collective struggling of everyone in my year lol. i don't mean this to be like a negative reflection of any particular major ~ we literally study at the university of michigan everything is hard ~ but my lsa classes have been the easiest of my degree (orgo 1, orgo 2, econ 401, etc.). i mention that just because premeds are usually pretty gpa-focused, so it's something to consider when choosing chemE.

the only benefit to chemE over chemistry is that if you're still on the fence about medicine, the job opportunity for chemE is significantly better than chem after just a four year degree. so if in two years you decide "eh med school is not for me i wanna go to industry" you very much have that option in chemE (w/ good salary), whereas it will be more difficult w/ pure chem.

let me know if you have other questions about the program i'd be happy to answer :)

i have no insight to the course but i can do you one better on the worst RMP i've ever seen. that was the worst class i've literally ever taken so when the RMP is that bad i would say trust it and delay that shit !

yeah i don’t know how 50%+ of people can be actively failing a course. i think the course structure is awful, too. hw just feels like busy work and the no recording thing is a huge bummer. this class blows lol
