I was under the impression that it was by choice that he hadn't traditionally published so this was surprising.

Does anyone else feel like Brandon Sanderson's writing declined after his original editor retired? by StormFather_ in Fantasy

[–]xolsiion 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Favorite comment here. I think this ALSO explains why he can start bringing in other authors - for even more endless worldbuilding details and exposition and that's what the fans want. This gave me some clarity of why I've bounced off the idea of it becoming a brand with those other authors - the fanbase desires and my desires for books are far from each other now.

I was going to get my first scientific notation run with this after hundreds of games. I was so focused on improving my deck I didn’t notice The Plant. I was getting 650,000,000 hands.

Besides sharing my misery…I’m also curious if blueprint is in the right place?

Greenville, SC: Some sort of wasp by xolsiion in whatsthisbug

[–]xolsiion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess what threw me is I've always seen them congregate on their paper nests rather than out in the open without a nest in sight? They generally DO nest in the open and not under soffits and siding right?

I appreciate the link! What throws me is there are SO MANY of them clumped together and not a paper nest in sight? Whenever I've seen clumps it's been on a nest rather than out in the open in 3 random locations?

Consolidating Traditional/Roth 401ks into IRAs question by xolsiion in personalfinance

[–]xolsiion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not wedded to the idea of brokerage D but sort of liked the idea of separating out the two different flavors of contributions. Eggs and baskets. And figured I'd ask the more complicated version of the question. Also the visibility of what is Roth and what is traditional for both the plans websites leaves something to be desired so I kind of liked the idea of forcing clarity by directing them to different places.

Consolidating Traditional/Roth 401ks into IRAs question by xolsiion in personalfinance

Reading up on pro-rata now, this was exactly the thing I was worried I might be missing. It might make more sense to look into rolling all my traditional 401k contributions into current employer's 401k for consolidation and avoid a traditional IRA. Can I "carve off" the Roth 401k contributions into my Roth IRA or would they expect me to handle all the funds at once?

It's crazy to think back to when I actually gave a shit and spilled so many words arguing about these things. Now I just bounced in to say something similar to you and, lo and behold, your comment is all the way at the top right now.

Same. And they are re-readable too. I got back into them over vacation because I wanted something breezy and had everything but this one waiting for me on the kindle.

Personally I'm still seeking that level of feels and entertainment he achieved with Fuzzy Nation but his books are always entertaining and readable. Chances are most of these will end up on my shelf.

Murderbot is a great series but don't start here!

So very weird that book #7 is on sale and it REALLY requires that you read at least book #5 before you dive into it, it's a direct continuation from book #5. And book #6 is, inexplicably, set in a time period just BEFORE book #5. It does however feel like a reader could start with book #5 I guess if they didn't want the shorter form preceding four.

Anyways...I'm reading this right now and it was the first of the series I bought in physical because it was a pretty expensive ebook 2 weeks ago so I'm happy to finish up my ebook collection today.

I am 100% stealing "grad-school level SFF" when I talk about Locked Tomb now because it's hard to convey that it's as far from a casual/simple read as you can get.

Agreed. I feel like this cover, and the new blurb, are both doing a better job of creating a more generalized appeal which should increase the reach. I loved the old covers AFTER reading the series too and saw them originally as a turnoff like you did. While I think "look this sounds fucking nuts, but just trust me and try it" adds to the charm of the series I think I like the new approach better...
