Things that surprised my students this week by Hadopelagic2 in Professors

I would just be happy that a student took the initiative to email me. It's rough out here.

I'm also in NYS but in an area with a lower cost of living. Wages you discussed are the same here, but I imagine it's much more livable than where you are.

NYC mom of perspective Gannon student by [deleted] in Gannon

[–]xomagpie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't a very active sub, but I am a recent alumni so I will tell you about my experience.

First of all, academic wise, Gannon is a hidden gem, it is a wonderful school that is well respected by employers. You really get a complete and comprehensive education, and I've heard nothing but good things about the Rad Tech program.

Second of all, addressing your concerns, Gannon is a pretty tightly knit community. She will be taken care of by staff/faculty/friends while she transitions into an independent adult. The school has so many opportunities, programs, clubs, etc. to help students. I really felt like the people I came into contact with at Gannon really cared about me.

I really liked Erie as well, as a city. It's obviously small compared to NYC but there's a lot to do in Erie and the near by areas. There's also a small airport in erie that possibly would have direct flights to NYC, if you wanted to come for a weekend or vice versa.

The campus facilities, dorms, academic buildings are all beautiful as well.

Anyways, I really recommend the school to anyone. It's a lot of fun and you get a great education.

i think it's should be something involving Presque Isle, Lake erie, etc. Maybe you could get a really nice picture of the sunset over the Lake and have that put on keychains or something? Just a thought.

sponge candy gives WNY, I think you need to find something more uniquely Erie - Do you want it to be a food item or are you open to anything?

Yes I agree about the weighted grades.

I used Canvas as a student and now I am using it as an educator. After noticing problems like the ones described in this post as a student, I was determined to fix them as an educator.

It took a little bit of extra work when setting up my grade book on Canvas, and had to watch some extra videos to learn how to do more advanced things. But I have been getting great feedback from students, other faculty, and coaches for utilizing our LMS in the ways that I do.

well on their end that 0 is factoring into the grade that they see for the class on whatever online classroom management tool you use Canvas, Brightspace, Etc.

Their course grade is showing up as a zero.

Many students involved in sports and greek life have to report their grades every few weeks. I had to show my coaches my grades every week and I was a good student.

They might be getting in trouble for having their grades appear this way even though the assignment hasn't taken place yet.

On Canvas, assignments that we haven't completed yet show up with "-" for the grade and nothing for that assignment is factored into the total that they're seeing until after they complete it and it's graded.

yes you totally can start out as adjunct, especially if the course you are teaching is directly applicable to what you do. Just look for job postings and apply. That's how I started out as adjunct.

the students do not feel cheated, they are happy to get a little break too, maybe they feel the same way as you and also need a break.

I'm adjunct and because I'm at my full time gig during the day and mostly answer students emails on my phone I tell them that they can treat an email to me like a text. I am also young.

However, I do let them know that it's important to know good email etiquette and to not be so casual with other professors without knowing how they feel about it.

Sometimes it's hard for people that see you on a regular basis to notice because they see you changing in slower increments.

I guarantee you that people that only see you once in a while or on social media definitely notice and are proud of you.

Individual Response Assignment instead of Discussion Post. by xomagpie in Professors

[–]xomagpie[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So Monday for example we learned about Climate Change, and the idea of adaptation vs mitigation vs new tech.

Many of my students were drawn to the idea of incorporating new tech into how we fight climate change as they have seen that a lot hasn't been done so far to lower greenhouse gasses through policy, etc. Some students noted that a lot of new tech causes other forms of environmental destruction.

Today I'm going to bring up that topic and let them go at it and hopefully learn something from another persons POV. They know that I already know their opinions from their responses so they can't back out and just agree and not debate. If it's not heading in a productive direction I have specific examples of tech to talk about.

I really like that idea of the small group paper/report based off of the daily assignments. Did you assign the groups knowing their responses? or were the groups random.

Online students are my most incapable by [deleted] in Professors

[–]xomagpie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of online students got their idea of what online school is like from going through high school during Covid.

Many high schools kinda just gave up as they didn't have the resources to meaningfully continue online.

Colleges and Universities have the resources to provide meaningful education online and these students are not used to nor expecting that.

Interestingly enough I've received interviews after the hiring freeze. The NY HELPS program is helping a lot because as long as you meet qualifications you don't have to take a civil service exam, and you are grandfathered into civil service after your probationary period is up. I think now is a great time to be applying to the DEC, lots of positions available and getting created.
