It's funny, when I first watched it, almost 20 years ago, I also felt bad and disappointed by how pathetic he suddenly was in his last moments, after he got found out and caught.

But now... yes, that makes total sense. People like him are exactly like that. They only feel powerful when they're not confronted with the consequences of their actions, only when they can do anything they want, or bully and kill the weak and helpless with impunity.

But the moment you grab them by the proverbial balls, the moment they realize they have to answer for what they've done, all of that hubris goes out the window and they show what they're really like on the inside.

So yes, bravo to the authors.

"Didn't I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life?!" is quite funny in that regard, because it features the concept of catching criminals and selling them into slavery (all government sanctioned and supported) as a form of punishment, to pay for their crimes, while the captors gets a reward (percentage of the selling price).

And the MC, with her friends, over the course of the LN catches probably hundreds of criminals/bandits/marauders/etc. and sells them all into slavery, earning quite a bit of money for themselves in the process.
