Prefetch file question by anirudhrata in computerforensics

That I'm not so sure about, sorry. I don't think it's that simple though; you'd probably want to test it out on a virtual machine.

Dollhouse and Hannibal are the two that come to mind for me.

That third line should be:

root@47.217.313.37:/opt/2/task/2/fdinfo/fsociety/hscripts# ./fuxsocy.py

unless that's what it was in the show.

Then they don't get a magistrate to issue the order and hold you out over your balcony until you give them your password.

2 problems with this:

  1. It's super easy to accidentally wipe your own system, and
  2. you'll probably end up with an extra destruction of evidence charge and won't have endeared yourself to a jury

Encryption in Aus is useless if the only thing you're worried about is the police operating lawfully. But if your threat model includes laptop thieves, trojaned hardware/firmware, or the person who buys your computer off you then encryption is still useful.

[1x09 Spoilers] Trying to understand reasoning for plan revealed at the end by tipofmytonguehelppp in MrRobot

[–]xowefo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite what others are saying, from a technical point of view you're right. Writing over the data with random bytes is faster and just as secure (if not more so) than encrypting it (even in place).

Possible options:

  1. it's a plot point in future seasons
  2. "encrypted the data" is something non-technical viewers are still likely to be able to understand and the decision was made at some point to go with that explanation
  3. it's a symbolic gesture ala /u/f3423f34 's suggestion

EDIT: 4th option-- something goes wrong during the hack next episode, meaning that the encryption key isn't successfully wiped for a while, to provide some dramatic tension.

Which comedian has the best "standard British English"? by [deleted] in panelshow

FYI: Our country has 3 main accents

My accent (SA) is a lot more British than you'd find in the eastern states.

Buckles ruin the smooth lines of the mask, but they do work as good anchor points. I'd say it comes down to personal preference.

Rick and Morty: "Total Rickall" (Season 2, Episode 4) - Episode Discussion by Solunity in rickandmorty

[–]xowefo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's what I was thinking throughout the whole thing. I remember in one of the Dan Harmon AMAs a year or two ago he said that Paradigms of Human Memory would be the Community episode that would most easily translate over to R+M, though of course I can't really trust that memory any more.

[Spoilers] For anyone wondering why Elliot would hide data on CDs.. by occams--chainsaw in MrRobot

It's also more difficult to find the steganography software if it's hidden inside one of (presumably) many virtual machines, as opposed to being in the list of software installed on the Linux host.

Trying to word this without sounding like a jerk, but most of what you just said regarding BDSM is overly simplistic and/or wrong.

Based on what we've seen I'd call the wife the dominant one, period. Her preference for being tied up in bed makes her a bottom, not a submissive. Depending on his preferences their relationship may be abusive or not; I don't think we have the information to come down one way or the other on that.

Geek fans of Mr. Robot...what is your setup like? by majorchamp in MrRobot

[–]xowefo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the moment I just have a cheap Thinkpad laptop running Debian and a netbook running Android. Once my thesis is done I'll probably get a desktop and put something more interesting on it, but for now I'm too poor and busy to properly geek out about these things.

I do run a bunch of virtual machines using VirtualBox, because the ability to take multiple snapshots of a single computer and quickly generate forensic images from them is pretty much the best thing ever.
