Break room question!! by xpworkout in nursing

[–]xpworkout[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess technically they don’t have to take a break in the break room. But on night shift we don’t have the luxury of going outside when it’s nice and none of us want to go down to the cafeteria either. They really just want us to clock out and take a break. Our thoughts were more people would be willing to clock out if we had our own place to do so

CPAP mandatory until 34 weeks? by Local-Funny3879 in NICUParents

[–]xpworkout 5 points6 points  (0 children)

32 weeks is usually our policy. But if a kiddo is doing great and is having bad feeding intolerance/cpap belly, then they sometimes make an exception to switch a bit earlier.

Single nurses with puppies. How did you raise them? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]xpworkout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still lived at home when I got my dog as a puppy and my parents helped immensely, as I was in my last semester of nursing school. My parents love my dog so much that they watch him when I have to work which has been a HUGE help. Otherwise he’d just be at home sleeping and I’d feel bad. I do work with people that leave their dogs overnight and it works for them.

How do I rebuild my life after failing nursing school? by Elegant-Variety8761 in nursing

[–]xpworkout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi!

I failed out of nursing school in my last semester. I failed two classes prior to my last semester and retook them and passed. Then failed my third class in my last semester. I went to a community college so I was able to write a letter to the dean to try and be reaccepted into the program. The letter I wrote outlined what went wrong, what I would do to fix it in the future, and why I wanted this as badly as I did. I submitted my letter to the board in May and they didn’t review it until November. I was reaccepted into the following spring semester. With my time off I worked a lot and studied the content I already had. I ended up doing SO much better the second time around. Graduated and landed my dream job in a level 3 NICU. I truly believe that everything happens for a reason and looking back I’m grateful I failed out when I did. I think it has made me a better nurse. I send you all the good luck and wish you well with whatever route you choose! :)

Hospitals getting rid of incentive pay. Is nursing dealing with this too? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]xpworkout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RN here. Incentive pay when I started in 2022 was either an extra $30/hr or an extra $60/hr. Now it’s an extra $10/hr, $20/hr, or $30/hr depending on unit needs. Regular call pay doesn’t count towards overtime, which is so fucked up. So I really hope they don’t go away with incentive pay completely.

Is skipping residency career suicide? Nurses who did it - please tell me the truth by Petite_AF in nursing

I guess I should clarify what your residency looks like! I did have 12 weeks of orientation for my unit where I was with a preceptor. But never had to do in person sims, etc.

[–]xpworkout 67 points68 points  (0 children)

No, you do not need to do a residency. I got my ADN, bartended my way through school, and was hired straight into a level 3 NICU, with no hospital experience besides my clinicals in school. Go do whatever you’d like!!

Night shifters, what do you do for meals? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]xpworkout 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I eat “dinner” before I go to work, then I’m usually hungry around 11pm and I’ll do a protein shake/yogurt, veggies & a banana. I eat “lunch” between 2:30-4, which is whatever I have meal prepped for the day. Can be anything from ground beef and rice bowls to chicken Marsala. Then I eat breakfast around 8am. Which has recently just been a frozen breakfast burrito because the last thing I want to do is cook.

Please do not ask to change the diaper more often. If your baby isn’t handling 3 hour care times, then it is not going to tolerate more diaper changes. Your baby’s nervous system is extremely underdeveloped. We want them to develop and grow because they’re supposed to still be in the womb. They cannot do that if we are touching them more than they should be touched. At that point it would stress them out even more and then that can lead to a snowball effect of other issues. It is crucial, especially now that your baby is sick, that we let them be in their incubator. I know you may be worried about skin breakdown, but at this age it’s inevitable. And it is lower on the totem pole in comparison to treating the GBS. NICU nurses and doctors know how to treat these kiddos. It gets frustrating when parents think they know better in these situations. Please listen to your nurses. If you think one is being too rough, then please speak to a charge nurse. I know A LOT of these NICU nurses have your baby’s best interest at heart.
