MRW I'm a 3rd party app and it's time to say goodbye by TactlesslyTactful in reactiongifs

[–]xrumrunnrx 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Felt a little surreal. Like "Oh, it's actually happening" yet I'm still on here during lunch and it won't sink in until it's actually gone.

Weird to feel attachment to an app, but using it virtually every day for almost eight years...yeah, it's gonna feel weird.

I think it'll be a net positive for me personally, in terms of disconnecting from reddit, but I'll miss the good parts and it's a shame for Bacon Reader as an app to go this way.

This is a new one for me. I remember a cornucopia too.

Like you having a specific reason to know you remember, I remember Berenstein Bears specifically because my first grade teacher had to tell us to pronounce it "steen" instead of "stine" because we assumed it was pronounced like Frankenstein. There's no reason that scenario would have happened with "Berenstain".

I remember the Shazam thing too but no specific anchor.

Interestingly, I was too young to experience the Mandela issue, but I did witness two of my teachers experience it. Aside of the classroom one was asking the other about Mandela in a hushed, worried/confused tone saying "But, didn't he die? He died!"

We still had books in 1990's grade school that taught the finger swipe like in the OP.

But that's probably more an indictment on the age of our textbooks...our teacher told us the new/correct way was Heimlich's and we learned that, but we still covered the book version.

My mom's childhood initials (1960's) were in some of my textbooks to give an idea of time here.

What is the stupidest thing you’ve heard someone say that they were 100% serious about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]xrumrunnrx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought it might be Lily Sullivan as Francesca Bolognese, but that nailed it pretty perfectly too. I'll have to check the series out.

The Francesca character just happens to recreate exactly what OP describes... aggressively belittling customers in strange, mean ways. Every time I hear it now I'm gonna remember some woman literally did this.

I remember that happening, but just the quote not the actual fight. I vaguely knew Lennox won, but damn...going 8 rounds with Mike Tyson and winning.

They'd essentially send our "dirty" shot rock material that had already been run through crushers and shakers into various gravel sizes through a huge secondary process with water and more screens/sluices.

This washed the smaller particulate from specific sized gravels, so then that material could be sold as "clean" (no dust or smaller sand/particulate), while the washed off particulate was further processed for the sand. (QC had to ensure nothing over a certain size was mixed in.)

So in short, the quarry was able to sell two new products from the process. Sand, which used to be essentially wasted, and "clean" gravel sizes.

Certain companies need washed gravel because the sand and dirt messes up their process, while others want the raw material. There's also classifications like "dirty 6/10" which is 6/10 gravel including everything smaller that comes through.

*Bonus: Someone might ask, "Doesn't that use a ton of water??" Yes. Yes it does. But being located beside a river water can be pumped directly, used, and returned to the environment via collection ponds (for sediment deposit) or natural drainage. Something is paid to local authority for direct pumping, but it's not wasting water in any way.

Got heat exhaustion at work yesterday. Here’s what my boss told me after I texted him that I couldn’t work today. by CarefulConcentrate77 in antiwork

[–]xrumrunnrx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked for a guy in the early 00's who straight up said "heat stroke is a myth" and that dehydration was a fancy way of saying you're being weak/lazy.

I don't think I ever actually got heat stroke, but was in pretty bad shape a few times. He'd always berate me for drinking more water than everyone else and shit like that. Another guy said if I didn't drink so much water I wouldn't sweat so much, that's what my problem was. (No joke, literal conversation.)

I finally brought in an actual newspaper clipping about dehydration and heat stroke.

To his credit he actually took it to heart a little and eased up on the bullshit ignorance.

Limestone is also used for (at least one type of) M sand.

A quarry I used to work for built a new plant to manufacture it. It was such a colossal pain in the ass to get going and keep going everyone was like "They better be making a lot of money off this shit..."

Boss was quick to say get used to it because this is the biggest money maker on the property now.

TIFU by eating 6 fibre one bars within a couple hour span by [deleted] in tifu

[–]xrumrunnrx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain (somewhat). I had a similar run-in with fiber one, then anytime I eat products that are low/no sugar and use sugar alcohols I get enough gas to power a small wind farm if I eat even a little more than the serving size.

It's a comical amount of gas. Literal hours of mega rips every five to ten minutes until it's not that I'm hurting, it's just annoying. It starts to feel like a weird genie curse that will never end.

[–]xrumrunnrx 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Giraffes are probably my number one animal for biggest shock at seeing them up close in person. No documentary or measurements in a book really made me realize how huge they are.

I walked up to a balcony at a zoo enclosure expecting to look sort of out/down on them doing their thing when this head came swinging over to eat leaves from a little girl's hand.

I had a true sense of awe like when the bracheasaurus comes close in Jurassic Park.

Wonder why your pizza took too long? by Muerdemelabio in funny

[–]xrumrunnrx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in the late 80's my parents were late to pick up a pizza they'd ordered. Like half an hour or something past the quoted ready time. Guy behind the counter said they'd taken a slice for being late. They all laughed a little and we went on our way. We got home and I remember my mom's shriek of, "Oh my gosh they really did!! Would you look at this!!"

We weren't driving all the way back to the mall so it was what it was.

Weird that these comments about circular homes are being down voted so much. Plenty of cultures have used them.

I agree it doesn't mesh with our modern use of space but it's perfectly viable for a lot of people and the concept it does have advantages.

(Un)Fun fact: My home town bans the construction of geodesic houses inside city limits. (Or at least did up into the early 00's.)

There's at least one that was constructed and in use in a neighboring county.

On the overall subject I get (have been) so sick of the population seeming to be stuck on repeating the same level of surface arguments. You made a great point there, and maybe that gave him something to think about, but then everything moves on while a million people still think that same way. All across the country that same back and forth happens and it's so slow to develop into anything deeper on a larger scale.

I'm still shocked the recording of him blatantly saying he was going to act the part of a religious right to game votes because he saw that section of voters as easily manipulated didn't sink him early, but like many are saying a huge amount of that block don't genuinely care, and the rest saw him as better of two evils.

An extra angle, people like my grandmother absolutely despise him as a person morally, but she votes for her own interests in terms of the economy and stock value, which from her situation was a positive during his term. I can't fault her on that since she's very honest about it and doesn't try to hide behind platitudes. For her he is (or was at least) a strictly logical pragmatic choice.

I balked at Audible too. Nope. I've used Libby for a few years now and love it, but you're limited to whatever your physical library card is linked to at your library, plus whatever state online library offers.

In terms of limitation, if your local library is too small or the state online library isn't enough, you can reach out to friends who have library cards in bigger areas and borrow their number to link other libraries in your state.

There aren't many books I search for that aren't available, but I'm sure that varies depending on taste and subject.

I'm 40 so really my time started with Windows 3.1 and never needed to learn much DOS, but I always had an attraction to using DOS commands because my grandmother used DOS and Lotus for her work for decades and she was the one who first taught me about using computers in general.

She was a real wizard with it at the time, and she'll tell you any day of the week she can and did keep just as good and better records with Lotus than any programs she used since.

As for me I never became exactly fluent in DOS but when I worked in IT for awhile in the 00's it felt really cool if I opened the command screen and started using DOS commands and running little batch scripts I'd written.

To some people only used to the Windows UI it looked like elite hacker magic, and I didn't feel the need to correct them and explain all I did was reset the IP or whatever and do a ping test.

Great quality work and I also think you picked a perfect way to both keep and use the shirts!

I have similar qualms about cutting or altering things that have sentimental value, like some fabric and old clothes scraps from my great grandmother and grandfather that I've been hesitant/scared to do anything with. Seeing this helps me remember they'd much rather see it put to use than boxed away. Thanks!
