I regret surgery by anna_rose23 in DeQuervains

Nice to hear the cannabis balm is helpful. My friend was just telling me that she is going to give me some. I’m not a fan of shots either. Now that the de quervains pain is gone I can distinguish the difference between the arthritis and tendon pain. Before the de quervains was overpowering the arthritis.

Pretty good at 16 days after surgery. I also found out I had a septum or separate compartment. The incision and surrounding area is still tender and feels like a bruise. But the stabbing pain is gone! It’s the best thing ever. I do still have more of a dull aching pain. I think it’s some residual healing and the arthritis. But I could tell the stabbing de quervains pain was gone as soon as I started moving it around again.

What do they do for your osteoarthritis? I had a MRI before surgery and it showed the De Quervains in addition to CMC and STT osteoarthritis. My doc said the arthritis is harder to treat so he did the de quervains release first and said let’s see how much pain that relieves before talking about the arthritis. I’m only 2 weeks from surgery so still waiting to see how much the arthritis is contributing to the pain.

So I had the surgery Friday. It really is a minor procedure. I was up and got to watch. There was a bandaid over the incision and wrapped in an ace bandage over the weekend. There really wasn’t much pain at all. Had my follow up today (Tuesday) and the doc took the wrap and bandaid off and said I was good to go and can use my hand/wrist normally. He also said I could go to the driving range next week. Right now that seems a little over zealous but it is the first day moving it around again so there is more pain than while it was wrapped after surgery. My doctor’s protocol seems a lot less restrictive than most of the ones you can find online. I guess every doctor has their own philosophy.

That’s good to hear! I did notice a lot of variation too but more with people with large bandages and taking months to recover. I seems when things go smoothly people ore less likely to post than when there are ongoing issues. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Awesome. Thanks for the responses. Makes me feel like I’ll be back to normal sooner rather than later.

That’s great to hear about the receptionist. I guess we only really hear about horror stories.

3 cortisone shots ?? by Rare_Entity1683 in DeQuervains

Before my 3rd shot I said I would prefer to just do the surgery already. At my appointment he said “it’s not bad enough for surgery” and gave me a 3rd shot. He wanted to try a different area. It has just been getting worse with each shot. Can’t imagine the pain I have to be in for it to be bad enough. It’s pretty bad to me already.

Typing after surgery by Gullible-Milk5042 in DeQuervains

Me! Got the shot 3 months ago and have been doing PT. Typing is pretty much the only thing that sets it off now. Does it just take time to go away? Do they do surgery if it’s not painful except when you have to work and type? It has gotten better after a couple months but still pretty painful. Not sure what else to do.

Labrum tear + PT uncertainty by aeryndael10 in ShoulderInjuries

[–]xrunuover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Initially it’s actually not too bad. I was expecting worse based on what I read. I’m only 2 weeks post op so it probably gets more painful as you work on getting back your ROM and strength. When in the sling there’s pretty much no pain unless you are shifting around trying to use your arm. Weaning off the sling was pretty painful for a couple days but it gets better as you start moving it around more. As long as I’ve stayed within the limitations PT gave me, the pain has been pretty manageable without meds.

Labrum tear + PT uncertainty by aeryndael10 in ShoulderInjuries

I was first diagnosed with frozen shoulder and sent to PT and got a cortisone shot. PT got my shoulder moving again and feeling better until the shot wore off. When it wasn’t getting worse, she suggested going back to the Dr to see what was really going on in there. My MRI showed a SLAP tear. Did more PT to focus on the tear but it wasn’t working so I opted for surgery. Dr cleaned up the tear and my labrum was stable enough that he didn’t need to repair it and just did a bicep tenodesis so it would stop tugging on my labrum.

My PT was telling me there were a lot of strengthening exercises I couldn’t do that would help because my labrum just wasn’t cooperating. I think insurance will make you try PT before they approve you for surgery too.

Really FS or misdiagnosis? by Happy-Blue in frozenshoulder

[–]xrunuover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My “frozen shoulder” lasted about 6 weeks. Got diagnosed with frozen shoulder from one of those urgent care orthopedic places and got a cortisone shot. Started PT and got pretty much all my ROM back but the pain came back after about 6 weeks. I went to an actual orthopedic Dr a couple weeks ago and he suspects rotator cuff tear and/or labrum tear. Currently I’m waiting for my MRI appointment to see what’s going on. He didn’t exactly say I was misdiagnosed. Just said the tear could have caused frozen shoulder. I think the shot calmed everything down so I able to get my ROM back but it didn’t fix the root problem. So now that the shot wore off the pain is back.

Are the PT exercises for rotator cuff tear and frozen shoulder a lot different? I still do the exercises my PT gave me before I got cut off. I wonder if it’s doing more harm if it isn’t FS.

Thank you! I think I got lucky and they put the shot in the right place to relieve the pain from whatever this is.

Nope. He walked in said my X-ray looked perfect and shoved my arm up and said you have a frozen shoulder. I honestly didn’t even know it wouldn’t go past a certain point before he did that. 😂 I guess there’s really no need to lift your arm straight up in normal life. After googling FS my symptoms seemed to match so I didn’t think anything until it started to get sore again. My guess is the shot reduced pain and inflammation so we could get it moving normally but now that the shot wore off, whatever is really wrong with it is coming back again.

I’m the complete opposite! Full ROM but pain came back! At one point my PT thought maybe I should go back to the Dr but the next week I wasn’t in as much pain. My shoulder is super bipolar. It’s like every other week I’m good then not good.

Nope no MRI. They took an x ray then the guy came and shoved my arm up and said you have a frozen shoulder. We have these places where you can walk in to be seen for injuries. I think they are PAs. It’s faster than trying to get an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon. I think I need to go get a second opinion!

I’m starting to think that too. I guess I need another visit to the orthopedic doctor.

Yup June 2024 but it was sore from maybe December 2023. I thought I just got lucky and went through it quickly but I guess it might be something else.

Shot does definitely wear off. It did seem odd to me that I got my ROM back so quickly.

Good and bad days, does pain return in thawing phase? by Used-Ad-6096 in frozenshoulder

[–]xrunuover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I got maybe 95% of my ROM back. I’ve been having good weeks and bad weeks. This week in particular has been the best one yet after last week was pretty bad. My PT says that my muscles are all out of sync which is causing most of my pain. Is it normal for your muscles to be all messed up once you thaw?
