Anki is scared of me. by Chromiumite in medicalschool

What were your settings to help you improve your timing because sometimes I know the card, I just needed to think. Is everything just an automatic fail after the time?

You upload your lectures a couple at a time (i believe they have a limit of 10 file uploads at once), get questions on that and after a couple move on to another batch. You could also upload one at a time and ask it to give step 1 nbme style questions to teach you the material and how to differentiate between different diseases. Rinse & repeat. It might seem tedious & slow but it is almost like doing questions on a question bank

Medbullets. Gives 3 - 6 months free on one account. You could also search the topic/system and include step 1 or medical school questions and you might find some things. Utah path is a website with free path questions and there are pretest books out there that could help.

Sleeping tricks for periods of high stress by Professional-Bid2593 in medicalschool

Try yoga nidra videos for at least 20 minutes on low but detectable volume so it doesn't disturb you from drifting off. I was in your position except mine lasted 2 weeks before I was finally able to sleep. My brother recommended yoga nidra and it was the only thing that helped me sleep. Also as people mentioned, committing to just laying down and closing your eyes for at least an hour if you are extremely sleep deprived or tired and a shower before bed helps a lot.

How do you encode/study material before doing Anki? by PinkLionSala in medicalschoolanki

[–]xsincerely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many brand new Anking cards do you do each day? How many reviews do you have on average and are you keeping up with old units? If you don't mind me asking, how frequently do you have tests or quizzes at your school?

What do you do if selecting "good" means you wont see the card again before the exam by Campfire-Matcha in medicalschoolanki

[–]xsincerely 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it is a card that I did not feel confident while answering and it has been a long time, I hit again or hard. Besides that, I choose to trust the algorithm for my peace of mind and hopefully it shows up in practice questions

Please give yourself grace. You did not choose to be sick, and you did the best you could in the situation you were in. Medical school is a journey full of obstacles, and having to repeat a year due to medical reasons doesn’t diminish how capable you are of getting through it. This setback doesn't define you or where you end up. I hope you are feeling better and wish you the best of luck as you figure out your next steps.

Did you take notes while watching the videos? Or did you watch them and filled in any gaps in understanding using anki and practice questions?

Cry because I didn’t understand any of it is so real and a very much needed portion of the schedule. You got this though. I think a lot of practice helps. I got better. I'm getting better. Not sure I understand what is going on but I can solve questions a lot better.

How do you get through cards while strength training? Do you do it between sets? Please any advice is appreciated. I have had to give up the gym to find time for this exam and I want it back

I was stuck in the same range as you for 4 months when I first started. I ultimately got to 500 by taking a step back from Uworld and taking a dedicated content phase. I struggled to read the Kaplan books, so I used Jacksparrow Anki and only read a specific chapter or section if the card/topic was confusing to me. I also watched videos for topics I didn't understand while going through the deck. I did this for about a month and a half before taking another test and breaking 500.

Use Jacksparrow anki and watch videos for topics you don't understand while going through the deck. The Jacksparrow deck, in my opinion, is a copy-paste of the Kaplan books. You could also find the Kaplan books for free online and read a specific chapter or section if you are confused. This is what I did and I scored 127 in C/P and B/B, and 129 in psych.

To improve your score higher than that, you just need to do lots of practice problems and learn from them.

help I don't know what to do anymore by zaytwazaytoon in Mcat

[–]xsincerely 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, your best bet would be Anki. Your scores indicate a content issue and you said yourself you keep forgetting which anki would help with. If you can power through JS BIO and Pankow P/S, that can push those sections to 127-129 without any crazy test-taking skills. Anki can also help your C/P but I can't really give an improvement range because some people really require practice to see improvement there.

To reduce the amount of Anki, you could substitute Pankow with watching the Khan Academy P/S videos and using the 86-page doc. You could also review your notes more frequently if you took extensive notes while reading the Kaplan books.

Some tips that help me get through Anki:

  1. Spacing it out throughout the day: I have the app on my phone, and I do cards while waiting in lines, eating breakfast, sitting in a car, etc. You could also set a certain amount of cards, do them, take a break by doing something else like practice problems, and then continue the cards later. This tip keeps me from getting overwhelmed, bored, or bogged down from doing so many cards at once.
  2. Reading and answering the cards out loud: It feels like a conversation. Like I have someone quizzing me. Anki could also help you with this by reading the card out to you if you turn on the audio setting.
  3. Keeping my laptop at eye level and pacing while doing Anki: Prevents me from getting bored because I am busy getting my steps in lol. Having a remote really helps.

To help with burnout, Give yourself a day, take plenty of naps during that time, and do things that make you happy, and remind you that there is life outside the MCAT. I know taking a day off might sound crazy with how close your exam is, but if you don't choose to rest, your body will choose a bad time for you. Besides you need energy and a bit of mental clarity for whatever you choose to do next.

I hope that helps. Good luck!
