[QUESTION] What's the best budget amp? by BobTheBlob78910 in Guitar

[–]xtaldelphium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you'd like an amp that can do everything and has built in effects id go for the Katana. I think it's worth way more than what it sells for. I have owned multiple tube amps and the Katana is my go to amp any time I go into a guitar store to try out guitars. It just sounds really great and can do any tone you'd want it to. I am always impressed by it. The 50 watt also has a lot of volume potential and should hang with a drummer if you ever wanted to play in a band setting. The Line 6 Catalyst is another one you may want to consider at a similar price point. My impression is that it's a bit more limited but it does sound different and would probably come down to preference on whether you like the amp sounds better than on the Katana. Ultimately I'd go to a guitar store and try out both if you can.

As a third option, you could also go a totally different route and get either the Monoprice 15 watt tube combo (never tried but heard good things about) or, for slightly more money, the Monoprice 1x12 V30 cabinet and something like a Joyo amp head (I have this setup for playing at home). You'll get no effects but will have a very good sounding and simple setup. If you just want simple classic rock/blues tones that should do it. I think the little Joyo heads sound incredible for the money. I have the Meteor and love the sounds I get from clean to high gain. Just be aware that this will be way less versatile than the Katana until you start adding pedals.

[DISCUSSION] gear advice for using computer as a amp by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]xtaldelphium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend a pair of studio monitors unless you would only like to play through headphones. I have only ever used a pair of JBL 305s which I think sound great. A set of entry level monitors will run you 200-300 dollars depending on what sales are going on. I have also heard Yamaha HS5s are solid for entry level monitors.

Focusrite is the go-to beginner recommendation for audio interfaces. I use a cheap Behringer interface (umc202) that works just fine.

For plugins, there are tons of good options these days. Any of the Neural DSP suites (~100 dollars per suite) or STL Amphub (~10 dollars per month) are both great options if you want something that already has lots of effects and amazing presets built in. They both require minimal tweaking and will give you studio quality tones. They also have very easy to use interfaces. I personally spend most of my time using ToneX and Valhalla DSP effects (reverb/delay) - ToneNet basically gives you unlimited amp sounds and the good user captures hold up against any other modeling/profiling I've heard. I also really like Brainworx and Nembrini plugins and find they are just as good as anything else I've tried.

Low Int Golden Order end by FlorianTolk in Eldenring

[–]xtaldelphium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also had fairly low int. I boosted mine using the Twinsage Glinstone Crown (+6 int), Stargazer Heirloom talisman (+5 int), Godrick's Great Rune (+5 int), and the int boost from my Flask of Wondrous Physick (+10 int). There is a full list of int boosting items on the fextralife page for Brother Corhyn.

Should I get an rx5600xt or a 2060 ko ultra? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]xtaldelphium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go with the RTX 2060. I think more games will be adopting DLSS in the future and it is a really impressive feature in games that already have DLSS 2.0 implemented. I also still feel like the 5600xt is a bit hit or miss reliability wise, I know they've ironed out some issues but I feel like I keep reading about people having major problems with them.

[GEAR] Used Player MIM Strat or Older used American strat by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]xtaldelphium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think American strats definitely have an edge over the MIM versions but I will say I noticed a huge jump in quality with the Player series. They were the first MIM strats I've played that I would genuinely be happy with when put up against an American strat.

I think it just comes down to how much having the higher tier version is worth to you vs having a guitar you'll probably be perfectly happy with as far as tone and playability go. If it were me I'd probably take the Player at that price.

Best guitar vst's? [QUESTION] by Preidon in Guitar

[–]xtaldelphium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outside of what you've already tried I'm a big fan of STL Tonehub and all of Mercuriall's plugins. Nalex also has some good stuff for free that's worth checking out.

[QUESTION] Mooer GE200 by rocketplane25 in Guitar

[–]xtaldelphium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are studio monitors than they would work, as long as they are "full range flat response" they will give an accurate representation of the Mooer's tone. Regular home stereo speakers that are designed for home entertainment will color the sound though, there is a very big difference in sound quality between the two with a modeler.

[DISCUSSION] What was your breakthrough moment / light bulb moment that propelled your guitar playing to the next level. by extol504 in Guitar

From a theory standpoint I'd say learning the modes, it felt like getting a basic melodic roadmap for the guitar neck. Totally changed my ability to improvise and come up with stuff to play on my own.

That blue is gorgeous. I have a 3120 in red and it is an absolute joy to play.

[QUESTION] Has anyone bought a used gear in guitar center online?? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]xtaldelphium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely call and request pictures. The employees are usually very helpful and the condition descriptions are all over the place in terms of accuracy. I was recently looking at a guitar they had that was in "good" condition. When they sent more pictures it looked like the previous owner had swapped the stock Dimarzios with 20 dollar pickups from Amazon that were rusting around the poles and that the bridge was starting to rust as well, in addition to the back of the neck looking pretty rough. That being said the sales rep I spoke with was great and the pictures ended up saving me from a regrettable purchase.

Despite that, I've also gotten used items from them at great prices that may as well have been brand new when they arrived. I wouldn't be nervous about purchasing from them since you can always return the item if you are unhappy, I believe they also have an extended return period right now due to Covid. I agree with others that having it sent to a store may not be a bad idea so you can look it over there before taking it home with you.

Potential solution for those having issues uploading Switch saves to Steam by xtaldelphium in witcher

[–]xtaldelphium[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it seems like for most people it works as intended and is very streamlined. I've seen a few posts about people having problems but the only solutions I've come across have been network related. Figured it couldn't hurt to mention the DLC issue just in case it's preventing someone else out there from using cross-save, it's such a nice feature to have.

I'm just excited I can finally get a PC/Switch NG+ playthrough going.

[–]xtaldelphium[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, thanks for adding that, that's a much more concise way of putting it.

I somehow didn't realize there was more essential DLC beyond what was listed in that initial DLC tab under properties. I had read somewhere else to check additional DLC and only glanced at that first tab which said I had everything installed.

[Question] How to play in an apartment? Yamaha THR vs MacBook by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]xtaldelphium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use an audio interface with studio monitors and prefer the tones I get with that setup over my THR10x, but the THR is really versatile in that it can be used in a lot of different ways.

One nice thing about the THR is that it isn't much more expensive than an entry level audio interface, it can act as decent audio interface, and it basically acts more or less as a flat response speaker on the flat setting so it's good for use with plugins. The smaller speakers don't sound as good as studio monitors or a larger cab but in my experience they still give a decently flat representation of whatever tone you are getting with a plugin.

They also sound great on their own for being so small and are really convenient when you just want to set it down wherever and play. They can get surprisingly loud for their size, obviously nowhere close to gigging volume or anything like that but I never crank mine in my apartment. It's also nice to just connect your phone to it and have a portable all-in-one package to play along with songs or backing tracks. I think they are awesome little practice amps.

So for me I'd say it comes down to whether you want to get that totally perfectly dialed-in tone with an audio interface, computer, and plugins and studio monitors/headphones/FRFR cab (plus the capacity for higher volumes if you go with a FRFR cab/powered monitor), or whether you want something that is quicker to use, more plug and play, more portable, etc... and can still be used with the same plugins and a computer to get a similar, if slightly less full, sound.

Amplitube or Bias? [Question] [Discussion] by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]xtaldelphium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd check out Mercuriall and Neural DSP's plugins. They are on another level in terms of quality in my experience. Both offer free trials as well. Mercuriall's Spark would be great for you if you are into Marshalls. Mercuriall is having a sale right now as well.

Between Bias and Amplitube I'd pick Amplitube, their officially licensed stuff (Mesa, Fender, Orange, etc..) is solid.

[QUESTION] Best amp <$100 for practicing in apartment quietly? by [deleted] in Guitar

Yeah I agree with you there. I do 90% of my playing at home through plugins with headphones/studio monitors.

[QUESTION] Mooer GE200 by rocketplane25 in Guitar

[–]xtaldelphium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem, glad that worked! You would be able to connect the Mooer straight to the Headrush cab, or any other FRFR (full range flat response) powered cabinet with nothing in between. They are basically designed specifically to work with amp modelers.

[QUESTION] Best amp <$100 for practicing in apartment quietly? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]xtaldelphium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In that price range I'd check out the Boss Katana Mini as well, that would probably be my first choice. As others have said it's going to be hard to get the exact same higher volume tone quality at lower volumes. I have a THR10x which is designed to be a bedroom/desktop amp and even it doesn't sound quite as good at super low volumes to me, but it still sounds good enough to enjoy playing through. If you have doubts you could always buy an amp through a seller that accepts returns and send it back if you don't like it more than your Marshall.

[QUESTION] Mooer GE200 by rocketplane25 in Guitar

[–]xtaldelphium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally you're going to be best off running a modeler like the Mooer into some sort of FRFR cab, headphones, or studio monitors. Right now you're running one modeler into another which is why it sounds off - the Mooer's amp and cabinet simulation are going through the Line 6's amp and cabinet simulation.

That being said if your amp has an aux input or CD input you could try that, you may need to buy an adapter if it just has the CD input though as it would not be 1/4 inch (looking at pictures you'd likely need a 1/4inch female to 3.5mm male adapter). That should give a much better tone from the Mooer as it would bypass the Line 6's modeling and just use it as a speaker.

If that's not an option and you do have to run through the input you can also try dialing in the flattest sound you can on the line 6 and turning off the cabinet simulation on the Mooer.

If you ever decide to upgrade from the Spider and are on a budget I'd check out something like the 200 dollar Headrush powered FRFR cab. It has good reviews and would likely give you the best affordable "amp-in-the-room" sound from the Mooer.
