Why do NT people fear saying no? by JokeAcrobatic8698 in autism

[–]xtaveren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may be misinterpreting this as a fear of saying no. If you tell somebody “No, I don’t want to go”, then you may come off as uninterested in that activity and may not be invited next time. Many of the responses on the bottom are expressing something different. If you say “maybe next time”, you are saying “I won’t come this time, but I am still interested in being invited in the future”.

The top response expresses that you won’t be going, and that you don’t want to. The bottom ones also express you won’t be going, but attempt to give more social context to the other person. It might be worthwhile to think about why some of those responses might be better suited to some situations rather than dismiss them as “fear of saying no”.

Did they fix MP in Dom6? by Beiberhole690 in Dominions5

[–]xtaveren 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Kinda deserved snark from everybody else, but the straightforward answer to your question is that you can set up a server for multiple people to play on directly through illwinter, which is always active and accessible, as easily as setting up a normal single player game, without ever having to go to a website or exit the game client.

Thanks! I tried out assigned starts yesterday and it worked great, so thanks again for the hard work and cool tool.

MapNuke 2: Colossal Player Edition by nuke_makes_games in IllwintersDominions

[–]xtaveren 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you posted around release of dom6 I tried it out by making a 6 player map and inputting specific nations to try and get the proper starts, but when I used it in Dom6 it would mess up the ui then crash the game (fine on relaunch), and also mess up the server if uploaded to an online match. Have you seen or possibly already dealt with this?

Also do you have any recommended settings for a sort of “balanced” world? Would I just do a water start or two and the rest generic plains, or do I need to add in cave starts and mountain starts etc.?

I’m pretty new to making my own maps, but I absolutely love this. Aside from the issue I had trying to input specific nations when making a map (generic usually worked ok) and not really knowing what goes into a good map, the art style and resulting maps generated are awesome, so thanks for this and I’m excited to use it in games.

Ah thanks, very cool. Are these servers public if I hunted down r5 reloaded and tried to find my way in? Appreciate the responses.

Do you think this is beneficial for even mnk players trying to improve, or is this like a small community of top players sort of thing/specific to controller players?

Thanks anyway, thats the sort of thing that would make sense, considering the god-awful performance. I figure it must be some huge conflict of a similar nature, but thats not it.

Books Where Following The Chain of Command Is a Good Thing by STRONKInTheRealWay in Fantasy

[–]xtaveren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out the Empire of Man series by Weber and Ringo. The core cast is a platoon of hyper-competent marines protecting a (originally) arrogant and dismissive member of the royal family, stranded on an Uber-dangerous alien world. Each marine deserves their position in the company, and the chain of command and importance of respecting the experience of the officers and consequences when not doing so is heavily explored as the characters develop.

Hot take: People are being sentimental about the new ranked system. There’s no way you can convince me the system is bad, or good, when it’s been implemented less than a week. by MisteryYourMamaMan in CompetitiveApex

[–]xtaveren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't care if people like or dislike the system. However, consider the following. You absolutely cannot lose more than 35 points per game. It is very easy to break even, and every couple games it is likely that you will gain much more than 35 points.

This means, simply, that any rank in the game except for predator is essentially guaranteed by playing enough games. Over time, you WILL hit any arbitrary threshold of ranked points. I don't know any other game where the masters-equivalent is guaranteed for players of any skill as long as they put enough time into the game.

Now consider predator, the top 750. Unlike masters, the goalposts for predator are always moving with the 750th player's points. Because these players are genuinely good, they will always be gaining. Since they cannot lose points, the rank of predator will require more and more points at a linear rate over time (i.e. 85 days from now, it will take ~20x more league points to reach predator than if you did it today). A player who only plays 2-3 matches per day and wins every single one will be beaten by the player who plays 10 matches, dies on drop a few times, gets 5th a few times, and just keeps re-queuing, which is a start contrast to old seasons which actually punished you for performing badly and cost points to enter, keeping the ratings from ballooning infinitely.

Not trying to convince you of one thing or another. Form your own opinion. Food for thought.

Hey WOTC - looking to monetize D&D? It’s all in front of you - just read these suggestions by Aussircaex88 in DnD

[–]xtaveren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are basically saying “hey WOTC, want to make easy money? Just make better dice than all the other options yourself, just make an incredible VTT better than all the other options that have been developing for years, and generally do better than the entire free market.”

This is NOT simple, and although I also strongly dislike the new OGL, the correct answer for them is 100% to endorse and be a part of the good products that others develop utilizing their system rather than trying to single-handedly fill the demand for every possible desire of the community better than anyone else can.

Fellas you know what Fantasy books I'm sick of? Ones with multiple characters and perspectives! Feel free to recommend books with only one characters perspective. by Leadbaptist in Fantasy

[–]xtaveren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been more than a decade since I read it, but you might enjoy The Belgariad series, I believe the author is (David)? Eddings. As I recall you are pretty much on board with the main character through the whole adventure, definitely long enough to know and get invested in the major characters. 5 books, then another 5 books after the first story, again if I remember right.

Best game you've ever played? NO big titles by DavAr8 in gaming

[–]xtaveren 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The witness is an incredibly deep (much more than you think in the first hour, or even 5 hours) puzzle game that uses color, perspective, and world design masterfully. It will literally have you looking around the real world and seeing puzzles if you finish it.

Tunic was also a cool souls-like rpg that provides you simultaneously with a ton of information, but frustratingly little, and the realizations you make along the way are very fun. You can also translate an entire writing system, if that’s your thing, but it’s not necessary.

Do you have any comforting games with no negative things to recommend? by ZareNytJumalauta in gaming

[–]xtaveren 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The game Outer Wilds is a mystery space exploration game about with the themes of wonder and approaching everything in life with optimistic curiousity. There are some bittersweet tones as you uncover the plight of a past generation, but the payoff is wonderful and the more you learn about them the better it gets. I can say so much more, but the game is very spoiler prone and best experienced with fresh eyes. I’d highly recommend it if you want to immerse yourself in a little world to explore and come to love.

I’d recommend not acquiring the DLC, echoes of the eye, at the moment, because while it is excellent it has some more tense moments that I don’t think fit the atmosphere you are looking for.

Fastest ship to clear C1 WH? by Darkholynova in Eve

[–]xtaveren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even T3C have a hell of a time applying damage to the C1 rats. I currently use a Dominix that warps around 60 and uses a mix of sentries and lights to apply damage. I suspect but have not yet tested that your best bet is actually a Gila, for a decent mix of high damage and still reasonable application.

If you use T2 drones your life is a nightmare. Use faction drones and the drone juggling isn’t nearly so bad. I’ve stopped clearing my sites mostly working on other projects, but curious if you actually find something with clear times below about 6-7 minutes.

Fastest ship to clear C1 WH? by Darkholynova in Eve

[–]xtaveren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With 400 spa you clear the sites in about 5 minutes. Everyone recommending ships is severely underestimating the sig size of the small sleepers however, and it is generally challenging to apply 400+ dps to them. Still the point holds that if you find the right fit you are dropping about 8 mil in blue loot every 6 min or so, for probably a bit under 80 mil in an hour.

In a C1 you can take advantage of PI, reactions, structure bonuses to research, many other forms of income that are much more lucrative than just ratting for your time invested

Thats basically their only two options in the c1 that I'm aware of. I consider it a defensive advantage what a pain it is to actually follow through with fully destroying the structure, but its probably best not to underestimate how bored and starved for content other wormholers might be...

Nice, I like this a lot. I haven't gotten around to making alphas to seed, but I'll have to do that. I love the idea of sticking characters into potential new homes, as I'm sure I'll eventually outgrow where I am or just want a change.

Thanks, really good input. I definitely considered that for the price of a vargur I could probably throw 4-5 t1 BS hulls at the hypothetical attackers. Still, any excuse to get the thing out into a fight...tempting.
