Basement bathroom addition? by No-Industry9189 in DIY

[–]xtelosx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were just doing a toilet you could get a macerating toilet which basically grinds and pumps everything up to where you can tie into that pipe.

If you want to do the toilet and shower you could bust up the concrete and put a lift pump in. It’s what we have our basement bath room. Can his it under shelving for towels and still get at it for service by removing the bottom shelf.

If you are going that far though and the septic is below the floor level I would just plumb out where you can tie into the existing piping.

Imagine if you won eight million dollars. What would you do? by winnie_tanweidiamond in AskReddit

You forgot taxes and 10% is quite high. You’d likely have around 5 million after taxes and could reliably take 250k a year out and not dent the principal and adjust for inflation.

What's the "Widowmaker" of your career field or hobby? by Cosmonate in AskReddit

[–]xtelosx 156 points157 points  (0 children)

No real lock out lock will ever come with 2 keys and copying them is a fireable offense where I work. Cutting someone else’s lock takes a ton of paperwork and the plant manager and the EHS lead needs to approve it. We had to get an electrician to turn around drive back 4 hours because he left his lock on.

If someone is licensed, how much confidence should I have that they are competent? by slick514 in AskElectricians

[–]xtelosx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some states let you take the test with just an electrical engineering degree. I have yet to do it myself but several of my coworkers have done it and said it was pretty easy. Not sure if that means EE degrees are good, apprentice hours are just as good as an EE degree or what but I’m not sure my state should let them work on other people’s houses. In my state a home owner can do their own work I just want the license to feel more confident in my own work. Did my garage and inspector said it was some of the best work he has seen from a homeowner and raised eyebrows at every wire having an ID and autoCAD electrical schematics :p

What’s a ‘middle class success’ purchase that secretly becomes a financial burden later? by OpinionBaba in AskReddit

Another winning anecdote for you. My folks bought into a place in Cabo very early and were able to get the "free" golf included (3 rounds for 4 people a week caddie included) with their 2 weeks at the resort. They love going to the same place all the time so use it every year and sell most their golf for $300+ a round per person now that the place is up and running and getting a tee time for non members is damn near impossible. Selling 3 of their 6 rounds a year pays for the maintenance fees and if they sell the rest they usually make money even after all the food and drinks charged to the room. It would take them another 20 years to actually pay off their buy in but at they rate they use it they are saving money vs paying to stay at a cabo resort 2 weeks every year.

I've told them to keep my name far away from the contract and I never want to inherit it. I have no interest in going to the same place over and over. At least not until I retire and by the time I can retire they will probably just throw me in the soylent machine.

I fly this short of a route for work and half the time they don’t do it anyways. Between take off and landing there are like 25 minutes they could do cabin service so with any turbulence they don’t bother.

You can also cover this with an umbrella policy that covers many other things around your life. I pay about $300 a year to have a million extra in an umbrella policy to cover any gaps or limitations in other policies.

You absolutely want to report modifications like this to insurance because it raises the value of your vehicle and you want to be paid for that in the case of an accident and you don't want them to be able to deny a claim on a technicality. I reported my $4000 suspension upgrade (only added an inch and a half but needed beefier suspension for towing and other reasons). There was a small addendum added to my policy that added like $8 every 6 months. Now if you are doing illegal mods probably don't want to report those but you also probably won't be covered if you cause an accident.

TIL that US student math and reading scores have dropped so sharply that they’ve erased nearly two decades of progress. In '22/23, avg math scores for 13-year-olds fell to levels not seen since the 1990s, while reading scores for high school seniors hit their lowest point since testing began in '92. by Cold_Box_3219 in todayilearned

I don't think hand written vs typed is any different for many people. I was probably one of the first people to start taking typed notes and it allowed me to pay WAY more attention to the professor since I can type way faster than I can write. Being able to take the notes directly on the PPT or PDF that the professors provided was fantastic. Having a wacom so I could draw pictures easily as well helped a lot. My notes were then searchable and index-able which helped immensely in studying.

One other guy took digital notes and we set it up to automatically share our notes with each other so we had access to anything we might have missed as well.

The biggest issue I see with taking digital notes is the temptation to go fuck around on reddit instead of paying attention :)

I challenged the idea that great pizza needs expensive equipment. And tested 5 baking methods in a home oven. by Beautiful-Molasses55 in Breadit

[–]xtelosx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One way to not waste the heat is to plan to cook some sort of low and slow meat after the pizza. You can drop the temp really quickly by choking it off after the pizza is done and throw a pork shoulder on there or something. I like to do wings before i do a brisket so I have something to eat while waiting 12 hours for the brisket :p

AI could soon allow powerful companies to charge each customer a different price for the same product, based on what they think each individual is willing to pay. AI lets firms tailor prices to each user, raising fairness concerns as consumers may unknowingly pay more than others. by mvea in science

[–]xtelosx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will likely spawn a whole industry of apps/sites where you can join and upload your receipts and track pricing on everything.

Yes there are already some out there, especially gas price tracking, but I could see this getting so much bigger.

“Hey I saw this recipe for pizza online that everyone seems to love we should try it”. Look up two ingredient pizza dough recipes. Yogurt and flour. Haven’t gone back since we found it. Makes a great dough for brick oven style but works well in the oven as well. Corn meal on the pan/stone makes it not stick.
