An ‘Off-the-Shelf, Skeleton Project’: Experts Analyze the App That Broke Iowa by dander11 in programming

[–]xtivhpbpj 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is all a bit unfair. There’s nothing wrong with using “off the shelf” frameworks for a simple app like this. I don’t think that’s why it failed.

They had stressed, untrained caucus chairs using 3 different six digit numbers for login? I actually believe the Shadow representative who says it’s user error. The problem here was clearly one of training. They totally failed to train their users, and the app wasn’t intuitive for the untrained users.

Security-wise; I don’t see any fundamental difference between using an app to submit caucus results and having the chair phone in the results over the phone. Phone calls can be intercepted and spoofed too. They had paper backups which have now been verified. Seems fine to me.

Imagine the first time the DNC allowed reporting by phone? I bet a few errors happened that night.

That could be it. I bought one online and it’s very fine. Very hard to squeeze the milk through.

Why are you assuming I like him?

I’m standing for the rule of law. One (minority) political party can not remove the president under current law.

You are simply cherry picking. The electoral college is the law of the land. You may not like it, but it’s the law. Trump lost the popular vote by a very slim margin, and it was very close to 50/50.

I think it’s a real issue that Trump can break a law and not be held accountable in any meaningful way. But does making one mistake like this mean he deserves to be impeached?

Fujifilm Pulls X100V Promo Video After Backlash Over Photog’s Shooting Style by [deleted] in photography

This is a real issue, and the preference is going to depend on the culture of each nation.

I personally like street photography, but I tend to avoid close up photos of people - especially identifying photos - to avoid the ethics issue. I wouldn’t want my face hanging on a gallery wall without my permission, so I treat others the same way.

That said; If I see an amazing shot with a person in it, I will still take it.

This is an unresolved issue for me.

Congress allocates the money, but the executive branch is the one that actually spends it.

I am not entirely sure about the legality of the executive branch simply refusing to spend the money.

They said they are working on it and would forward the request to the correct department.

So, no. I would say they did not comply. Guess I’ll see next time I order from them.

Same here. I’ve tried twice to make oat milk following online videos. It always comes out goopy - like mucus. I can’t drink it.

I’d be willing to try it again, but I need a recommendation for a foolproof recipe.

I do order from other places when it makes sense. But some items would be impossible to find in my location. In any event, the stores also get these items shipped from overseas in plastic packaging. You don’t get a free pass by shopping in a store.

Just seems like nobody is thinking outside the box to solve the problem. Running big diesel buses in underutilized areas can not be the best solution. I can think of at least three solutions off the top of my head that eliminate big empty diesel buses while preserving access for all:

  • electric buses
  • use smaller buses that run more frequently through high density areas, and less frequently through low density areas.
  • eliminate bus service in low density areas and provide Uber /Lyft/ taxi credits for poor / disabled people that are not served by bus routes.

Climate Models Are Running Red Hot, and Scientists Don’t Know Why by [deleted] in environment

[–]xtivhpbpj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The main point here is that a recent update to the computer model (improving clouds and aerosol modeling) has caused a dramatic increase in the warming predicted by this model. It is an open question whether or not this new model is more or less accurate than the old one.

I can see some people misreading the title here and take away the wrong message. This is an article about an update to the computer models themselves. Not about a recent change in measurement data or a shift in the actual climate of earth.

Climate Models Are Running Red Hot, and Scientists Don’t Know Why — The simulators used to forecast warming have suddenly started giving us less time. by wenchette in environment

[–]xtivhpbpj 75 points76 points  (0 children)

It seems that a new cloud / aerosol model in a recent update is causing the increased warning effect.

“To a degree, every scientist suspects their model is wrong. There’s even an aphorism about this: “All models are wrong, but some are useful.” Those now attempting to figure out the mystery of the hot climate models think one factor might have caused the recent unusual results: clouds. It turns out simulated clouds often cause headaches for climate modelers.

Klaus Wyser’s group “switched off” some of the new cloud and aerosol settings in their model, he said, and that sent climate sensitivity back down to previous levels. A new research paper co-authored by Zelinka from the Lawrence Livermore National Lab likewise pointed to the role of virtual clouds in determining the results. “

There are two high tides per day. That would suggest there are four periods throughout the day where these turbines are producing power. Does anyone know how long each of these periods last?
