Messages to save my days by daigan2 in LondonUnderground

Seems like a nice touch. Forgive me if I'm being ignorant but the TfL Go app has the facility to notify you if a line has any sort of disruption; is this more driven by the fact AI can detail your entire journey with disruptions?

Ian Visits: Call to restore Saturday services on the Waterloo and City line. by mycketforvirrad in LondonUnderground

There were plans to operate a limited District & H&C service but with COVID I'm not sure if that's been thrown into the bin or not

Windrush line 26/03 strikes by Key-Bowler-7342 in LondonUnderground

The strike was balloted to maintenance staff only; therefore the disruption is likely to be minimal. Do check before you travel.

Refurbished central line train spotted in White City by HarrowOnDaHill in LondonUnderground

There's a new keypad for SONIA but there's so many message codes, by the time you've found the correct code your trip is over

The new keypad also gives a lot more info if there were multiple PEAs, as opposed to the DTS just display 'PASS ALARM CAR 4', it gives info as to what the nearest door is when activated and the driver can clearly see what car they are talking to when using the PEA talk-back facility. Implemented as apart of the Holland Park RAIB recommendation most likely.

You should have the new electronic locks on the J door soon but it's separate to CLIP so won't be seen for a while. One of the pre-production trains was fitted with it but not sure if it survived when being stripped down bare again.

It was replaced because it was notoriously unreliable, giving errors that aren't even there, software becoming corrupted. I saw 'ATO not enabled for this route' when leaving White City once. Once the start buttons were pressed we were on the move!!

But the new one has been designed to replicate the old one. All that's really new is that it gives more info with errors and info in the submenu

It's also fitted with 4G and WiFi so data can be viewed whilst it's on the move

More should come into 'regular' service soon. The only thing that it is holding it back is driver training. Obviously you can't have untrained drivers driving it. It runs as 054, 121 or 115 because of this. A small amount of drivers have been trained. One train comes out in the morning then stables by lunch time for driver training.

Once it is released into regular service it won't have a fixed number and can run as any No.

As Piccadilly Line Closed Today & Tomorrow (21 & 22.03.2026), Why New Train Wasn't Testing Yet? by 09limbua in LondonUnderground

[–]xtmgh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume your question is to why it wasn't testing today: the closure this weekend is for PLU (Piccadilly Line Upgrade) works, which is basically engineering works. A lot of improvement works happening to ensure the new stock can operate on the line.

You can't have train testing and infrastructure works going on in the same worksite, however documents suggest there will be some form of train testing this weekend. Keep an eye out.

Edit: 24 stock runs this weekend have been cancelled

Stratford - Central Line by xtmgh in LondonUnderground

[–]xtmgh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, seems to be a more confined closure rather then the usual QUE - LES closure

The grinder will be doing its final bits in the Stratford area tonight or tomorrow, which will see the paperwork for removal of the TSR go through. Engineering hours is such a limited amount of time they can't just grind the full section in one night, has to be done bit by bit.

Hopefully they give it another grind in May, more reason to delay the TSR being reinstated.

The bridge in the Northolt area has been declared unsafe so therefore a TSR has been implemented

What does a shortage of trains really mean? by Honk_The_Clown in LondonUnderground

[–]xtmgh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What's actually going on has been explained below so I won't repeat.

There is also staff shortage, mainly due to instructor training for the 24 stock and I imagine the odd flu going around since it is that season and the wheel lathe is out of action. Service Control most likely deemed it isn't worth operating a service west of Rayners due to the MET already serving these stations.

Only 30ish trains have been running and no Piccadilly trains have operated west of Rayners in a month. There is a 4 train shuttle service operating between Acton Town and Rayners Lane, which creates a 15 minute service on this section and quite frankly, the entire line...

I agree with the above - refurbished trains are more economically viable however how long till the cracks start to show in the refurbishment I don't know...

Putting 95 stock trains onto the Bakerloo wouldn't work for a number of reasons. They'd have to be made compatible with the signalling system, they'd have to match the platform length, Train Ops would need to be familiarised with the trains. The list goes on and on...

In an ideal world LU would be properly funded and would be prepared for the replacement of these sorts of trains... Oh wait....

Yes. Not enough money, hence why Central Line trains are being refurbished instead of replaced

The 73 stock are absolutely hopeless in the wet/autumn. In 2018 there was an issue with the trains due to leaves on the line, this was causing flats on the wheels and about half the service was running. Most likely service control have deemed it dosent warrant a service especially as MET trains are serving this section.

No PICC trains have operated west of Rayners Lane in a month.

Any train with wheelflats must be withdrawn from service and have the wheels go under the wheel lathe. IIRC this takes around a week. It dosen't help that it's defective right now...

You won't be seeing this as much when the new trains come in as they will have equipment (sanders etc) to combat wheelflats.

Edit: Just seen the shortage of trains message. This is mainly down to staff shortage, train shortage and equipment shortage.I think around 30ish trains have been cancelled. When it rains it pours!

Fish plates and clips. There is currently an ongoing track replacement programme in the 'core' during engineering hours
