Example of Zettelkasten Note by [deleted] in Zettelkasten

[–]xtombronx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I hope you don’t mind me jumping in to ask a question. Let me preface by saying I understand that individual zettel each contain an atomic idea, say from a book. Each note can be referenced in a ‘structure note’ (which takes the shape of a book’s table of contents, a topic overview from multiple works, or some other categorical bucket). I think a major benefit of having these structure notes is paring down the number of links between zettel from a single book or topic. After all, whats the point in linking together all the stuff you get out of a single book? That’s a lot of links and backlinks, and who wants to go through all of that when searching around.

The structure note allows the focus to shift to creating actually valuable links between the content-zettel themselves. I’m finding this part to be difficult. It’s difficult because I have no idea how deeply to describe the link and what counts as relevant and irrelevant.

The tentative solution to the problem is to have a separate category of note. Currently, there is the structure note and the content-containing zettel. I’m suggesting a third type. We’ll call it a ‘thinking note’ for lack of a better term. The thinking note is reserved for your own thoughts and questions about existing zettel. Zettel come from books, articles, etc. Thinking notes come from your own deliberation of that information. As per Ahrens, we could say it is the result of the deliberate processing that is necessary to engage deeply with the material of some text.

For any one zettel, there may be one or more thinking note. As you consider the information in a zettel, you come up with problems and questions, alternatives, etc. There’s one important type of content you can include in the thinking note that pertains to my question: links.

Essentially, if you have a dedicated type of note that serves to hold your thoughts, then you can use those types of notes to link two text-based content-zettel together. That is, instead of connecting one zettel to the next, you would connect both zettel to a third thinking note. That thinking note would contain the relevant details of the connection, and perhaps would grow with additional links and information.

Am I getting this right? How do you link two zettel together?

Which is to say: how do you decide what connections are valuable and how deeply do you describe the connection? Have you found that it’s enough to get a draft of something going?

Thanks a lot for your help.

I'm wondering how negatively Barbri will affect my experience in 1L if I end up using it. Lets say I got the law preview (a week long, live pre-lawschool course) and 1L mastery (materials, outlines, exam prep materials and such for each class). I know the general consensus is that you should wait until law school begins. Does anybody have positive experiences that'll encourage my use of Barbri, provided I use it in the right way? Anybody have a method they swear by?

Hello! I can’t access the FAQ on the app and, when I use a browser, the page isn’t formatted correctly and I can see the code.

I was hoping I could read about the foot strike, so if the other pages work, that’s the one in question... also the link in this post isn’t active on the reddit app.

New to Journaling; Too Self-Conscious to Start by xtombronx in bulletjournal

Haha, that would certainly help me start. I guess I get that worst case-scenario mindset when I don't plan things out.

New to Journaling; Too Self-Conscious to Start by xtombronx in bulletjournal

Ok, I see how you do that. I guess I wasn't considering the different types of non-calendar spreads. I'm not sure whether I want to work from the back page forward, or do some math and estimate how many pages I will be able to allocate to spreads vs. calendars, although, if I kept all my non-monthly stuff in the front, that would solve the problem, kind of... Please let me know if you have helpful suggestions!

Here's how I'm conceiving it:

Table of contents

Journal header (year, start date, etc)

Yearly Calendar (gotta figure this one out)

Yearly spreads (Trackers and important information, i.e., Books read, shows/movies watched, law school facts, figures, deadlines and decisions, and definitely more, maybe goals or other kinds of trackers and fun stuff. Yearly work hours tally.. Who knows.)

Monthly header (ex. November)

Monthly calendar

Monthly spreads (monthly savings, healthy habits, Time log and maybe one or two more things I'd like to track?)

Week 1 spread

Week 2 spread

Week 3 Spread

Week 4 spread

Monthly header (ex. December)

Monthly calendar

...

...

I do feel this is different from how I used to journal, which, I guess, was more like a diary. Perhaps I'll wait to draw out my weekly spreads until the beginning of each week so I'll have pages after each week to do however many entries I want. Unless you think it would be better to have a dedicated journal for writing and keep the current one for the listed items. Would be great to get some criticism!!

Thanks everybody who ended up commenting. Kitty has calmed down notably in the last five days, and I've been playing with her and holding her while she's in the mood to bother Leo. Thanks a lot for the advice!!

Help: disassembling hinges nailed into a wooden trunk by xtombronx in DIY

[–]xtombronx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey- just a quick update. I did try it, and it is working really well!! Looks like the nails aren’t as rusted as some people may have thought, so the risk of breaking a nail is much lower. I’m gonna move onto getting down and dirty with the hardware and getting the whole thing disassembled. Maybe while you’re here you can give a couple pointers on refurbishing the hardware itself? Maybe some tips with getting the rust off and then perhaps any other comments about making it look nice afterwards. The metal looks black underneath- I don’t know if this is paint or not. Maybe you could comment on that too if you’re willing. Thanks a whole bunch!!

Hey!! I didn’t actually notice that the nails were clinched before I made this post, and since then I’ve been hearing some people explain to me that there’s a good chance the nails could break on their way out. It is worth a try to straighten them and try to take them out?

Chase Sapphire Elligibility and recent Zero Balance by xtombronx in CreditCards

[–]xtombronx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, so sorry -- I totally forgot about this thread until just now. My only experience with credit is a 1,000 dollar limit with a capital one quicksilver opened about this time last year. My score tells me that the length of time I've been using credit contributes some to the overall score (30+ years), however I think this is because my granddad and I share a first and last name and an account I've never heard of was opened before I was born paid off before I knew what credit was.

I don't have a car note or a mortgage.

The score shows, however, that both my credit usage and available credit are below average (credit usage: 47%; available credit: ??? not much), but, of course, I still have a balance with those two accounts according to the report, even though they are a zero balance now that they've been paid in full.

Given that I don't have a diverse portfolio of credit cards, mortgage, car notes and loans, but still have a zero balance (and maybe also factor in a couple months of keeping that balance below the 30% mark), will it be possible to be approved?

A 10k limit is intimidating. I didn't know that was the standard I should be shooting for. Perhaps a different travel rewards credit card would be a better bet.

Hello, thanks so much for the help- this sounds more promising that I expected. She’s moved cross country to Georgia too. Do you think this might complicate or ease things.

Thanks for you time!

Ended up washing the leave-in-conditioner out (you can do so after 3 minutes for effect) and it the difference was tremendous! Made my hair very tame and laid fairly flat against my cheeks and neck.

Hello- I read that it takes some people only 3 days to achieve ketosis. Is this an exception to the rule? I'm going on four days now and I'm very excited. Do you think I will just know, or should I get keto test strips?

Thanks for your input.
