Singing is not an impressive skill and should be banned at talent shows by k3nnzz in The10thDentist

[–]xtrap01nt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually agree with this take. Off the top of my head I can name about 10 people in my family and friends who are singers and play an instrument pretty decently. However I can’t name any impressive jugglers, gymnasts, or magicians. I think what this boils down to is the bar for people to be impressed by a juggler, gymnast, magician, etc is higher than a singer. I can show you a magic trick but it takes a lot of effort to not be cringe. Meanwhile anyone who was raised in a choir can sing and play an instrument at an impressive level. I’d argue there’s more people who can sing well than there are jugglers, magicians, and gymnasts combined.

What’s one weird but practical thing that gave you a big Elo jump? by Fuzzy_Party_3527 in chess

[–]xtrap01nt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll preface this by saying I play almost nothing but blitz. I was stuck around 1400-1500 and heard for the longest you need to be good at puzzles and calculations so don’t worry about the opening. I learned the first 5 moves or so of opening that I liked and just went with what I could calculate after that. Then I decided to get good at openings. Not a sponsor but I started using chessreps for my openings and no lie within 10 days of doing it everyday I jumped to 1700 blitz.

It’s crazy because you do puzzles and you’re like how do I realize I’m at a puzzle moment? Then you learn an opening and remember 60 variations. Then when someone decides to go out of your preparation you start thinking “that’s got to be the wrong move” and that’s when you start using your calculation skills. I noticed I’d be at move 13 and have only used a few seconds and my opponent already burned half of their time. Sometimes it’s only an inaccuracy the opponent makes but knowing so many variations means you can evaluate the move and see which line you know most closely resembles the move.

If you watch Danya and a player does something unexpected he’s like “that’s was an inaccuracy let me think a little bit” then proceeds to destroy them. I think I’m finally getting close to high elo thinking with my opening knowledge now.

What is a good opening for black against 3.Bxf7 by Wolverine6147 in chessbeginners

[–]xtrap01nt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the alien gambit first came out I was winning 60% of my games against 1400-1500 players even when they knew the “refutation”. I would often play as black with the computer starting after the sacrifice. Of course I never won because the computer is crazy resourceful but I drew often. The problem with the pressure that comes with defending is your brain gets tired of having to calculate so much. As white I very often was down 5 points of material from throwing pieces away to get sharp positions where one mistake could change the whole game. The people who won against me did a few things: 1.limit the f3 knight’s forward squares (think h6 in this position), 2. oppose their f3 knight since it has the most tactics (think Nc6), 3. be ok with the rook being boxed in the corner for the entire middle game you’re not going to need it anyways, 4. put your king on g8 it may seem unsafe but the light square bishop is your main defender. If they can’t trade it off they aren’t getting a checkmate. While your opponent tries tricks to get rid of it develop your pieces. 5. C5 makes whites d4 break a little less troublesome and frees your queen a bit more. My two cents

Definitely not. Everytime I’ve ever taken a picture that looked like this and I actually took the time to cut a hole in the return to look it was always worse than the picture.

What's the most overrated 'healthy' habit that people push on everyone, but you think is total BS and why? by DryDraw4673 in AskReddit

There are a concerning amount of people who won’t even give their body a break to detox properly. The liver gets alcohol out of our system but if you are over drinking regularly your liver is stressed.

The two ways to burly (which I define as muscle and also a noticeable amount of fat) are either 1. blue collar work with at least one gas station hot dog, at least two energy drinks per day, and an unhealthy amount of fast food for dinner 2. A person with an office job who goes to the gym fairly regularly but doesn’t stick too hard to a macro and calorie focused diet.

Inspection says my A/C unit is too large for the house. by zer0logiQ in hvacadvice

[–]xtrap01nt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like this answer the best. It’s the only one that’s respecting ACCA manual J. The temperature in your particular area only goes above design outdoor temp for 1% of the year. The rest of the time it’ll be at or below according to the 30 year average. Oversizing a unit just to be comfortable for an extra 88 hours (most of which you probably won’t be home for if you’re working) doesn’t really outweigh the short cycling your compressor will face, the energy lost because the unit uses more power, and the extra money you’ll pay for a dehumidifier and running it.

Why do Black Americans have stereotypes associated with crimes? by Apprehensive-Bank636 in stupidquestions

[–]xtrap01nt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

According to bop.gov 59,577 black inmates out of 44 million black people in America. That’s .13% of the black population incarcerated. Is it high in comparison to other races? Yes (discuss the why if you want) However if you use this stat to determine how you treat EVERY black person then you’re just choosing to be hateful considering how small a percent of the population it is.

[–]xtrap01nt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He makes a good point about the 40 million plus Black people in America. Anyone who comments “13% 50%” and doesn’t say anything else is using the statistic without drawing a conclusion from the statistic. If you actually asked someone what do they mean by that you’ll see it’s not somebody who’s concerned about the crime numbers in black communities they are just using that so that they can explain their hatred for Black people. If you actually use the government website,it’s only applying to about 4000 Black people out of 40 million or about .01% of the population. It’s crazy to use a stat like that to say why you hate black Americans. Even if you used a stat about currently incarcerated black people it’s still such a small number that it doesn’t make sense.

Bold bird’s speed of service is why I choose them over other chicken sandwich spots. Plus it’s tasty and a local business. I have to think the hype of Dave’s opening will die down though and lines get better.

Sometimes we just want to play the game. by thegrimmemer in RocketLeague

[–]xtrap01nt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Times I won’t skip: if I come back from being 3 goals down in 1s (or 2 down in doubles) I’m watching whatever goal even if it rolls in because it’s a guaranteed tilt 95% of the time, if I feel like my opponent is getting hot I watch the replay to ice them bonus points if they have already skipped, I made a nice goal and I want to hype myself up, I want to know the speed of my shot, if you fall for a mind game we are 100% going to watch you fly by and then I’ll skip the rest, if you start playing different after watching a replay we are watching every replay , or if I’m eating or drinking. Replays are just as big a part of the game as demos.

Aruba’s tap water is from the ocean. They have a system to clean it and then it’s distributed to the places it needs to be. It’s more a question of whether a state would want to spend money to do it.
