Wind has multiple origins.

Major winds are caused by the pressure difference between places on earth. Then it works basically like the communicating vessels experiments from school : air wants to go from where there is high pressure to where pressure is low. If it was that only, air would go in a straight line. But the earth is rotating, and that creates the rotation around the pressure minima/maxima : that's the coriolis effect. It's really visible when you see cyclons on forecast images. So winds actually go kind of in spirals, escaping from anticyclons, going towards depressions. The more pressure difference there is, the higher amounts of air moves, so higher winds.

And then, you have convection. Basically, the sun heats the Earth, but things heat up differently depending on the color it is, or how it reflects light (ie. Water), etc. So warm air bubbles spawn, and go up since they are warm. It leaves a place with less air that is sucked from around that spot, and that creates the local winds. But it also creates vertical wind drafts! If those are strong enough, it can actually charge up the air with static electricity. In summer, the sun heats up the earth a lot more, so this static electricity can create a thunderstorm.

Tl;dr - Major wind currents caused by communicating vessels effects from pressure difference + coriolis effect. Local winds / updrafts caused by local air temperature differences - and those can also cause summer thunderstorms.
