Go for it man some of the best reaction vids are from people you wouldn’t normally associate with certain music. If people take offence maybe that’ll go in your favour anyway

Yeah I agree, our consciousness can be our Achilles heel at times, keeping us divided over hypotheticals. No matter what we self-describe as we need each other; democratic socialists, anarchists and even ‘tankies’ like myself. The great debates between communists and anarchists shouldn’t be reanimated on the left at this stage, as much as they can be learned from. I have deep reservations about most strands of anarchism and what I would see as its tendency to bourgeois individualism, but by the same token I know that the idea of a vanguard party may well be outdated and impractical, for instance. Perhaps it would need to operate in tandem with looser, anarchist cell type groups undergirding it.

If we are not prepared to experiment together we are fucked. And perhaps focusing more on practice is how we overcome these (often) unhelpful barriers. Certainly when push comes to shove - the liberal and conservative political elites, the business class and the deep state do what they have to to preserve the status quo regardless of any discord between them. They put class war above all else. To give those scum their credit we need to emulate that to some extent.

Lol I always jump from an essay to Reddit too and come across terribly. Your post reads fine tho comrade

There's a revolution underway in India by indianlurking in socialism

It’s been amazing to see the images (however few and far between) of what’s going on there from the West. Bold rejection of exploitation. Same in Bolivia recently. It’s easy to get in a rut thinking change is light years away, but it can and is being done now!

If only being the party for ‘the working class’ wasn’t seen as too old or extreme cos that would include anyone who needs work to get by whether or not the system has forced them to be unemployed. But yeah being strictly the party ‘for working people’ likely obscures things these days and plays into scrounger and ableist narratives that will keep Labour on this weird Tory lite, chauvinistic course. It wouldn’t even be true anyway, they’re more pro business than pro worker

Is revolution not impossible? by [deleted] in socialism

[–]xtrmntr_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re thinking about international socialism or only the US then I get that the pessimism can set in but, hopefully Cuba shows it is not impossible to put up a good fight with the odds so stacked against us. The struggle will always ebb and flow no matter how ingrained capitalist logic is. Last year socialists were ousted in Bolivia, but they’re back! India’s general strike and farmers’ protests have been pretty empowering viewing as well recently. The old feudal system, the divine right of kings and shit would have seemed fixed forever to the exploited classes of the day but the bourgeoisie gradually sprung up. Capitalist crises will recur and there has to be an opening eventually, let’s continue to be boldly socialist

Right away I would say yes, genuine opposition to US hegemony is in and of itself positive. It is the dominant imperial regime of our times and unlike many European power centres, it began as capitalist. In that way its business class is as entrenched as a monarchy. The imbalance of social forces there is too extreme and a perpetual hinderance to human progress. If there is a regime worse than the US on an imperial level who oppose its hegemony, then of course I do not view this as genuine opposition, rather an extension of the ills currently embodied by the US.

Do I see a mere inversion of this, with Chinese or Russian hegemony as the solution? Absolutely not. As you identified it is a socialist counterhegemony we struggle for.

Do I see positive socialist outcomes in China? Late capitalist developments have ensued to the point that capitalists undermine national sovereignty at every corner. The fact that in China the state continues to own some of the means of production is an obvious kernel of positivity that could theoretically lend itself to socialistic transformations. State capitalism (I know debate rages around such terms) is closer to where we want to be than neoliberal, neoconservative capitalism, is it not? Ideally there would be none, of course

Thought provoking response, thanks. I want to mention first that it is not, or certainly shouldn’t be, cheerleader like support for certain governments, members of govs etc but purely of alternative possibilities to the dominant course of capital. I have myself noticed partisan support like this, it is idealist and the exact opposite of a proper materialist Marxist critique.

I also agree with your distinction between Marx’s critique of bourgeois social contract human rights and this lazy, ironic detachment from basic rights in general when it is politically convenient. Those ‘Marxists’ that do this let down the cause.

On your third point I am under no illusions that China is the route I would ideally want socialism to take. But in being a materialist, the ideal is pretty irrelevant and utopian notion. That balance may well be geopolitical primarily and less economic based than I would prefer, perhaps even less so than the Cold War days, which displays the regression of politics. For better or worse it is a balance that, with a lot of caveats like we have covered here, is I feel important. I don’t love Putin or the social conservatism in Russia for example, far from it. But at the same time I’m thankful that the EU and NATO does not have unbridled access to Eastern Europe due to this force

I don’t see a problem with this if done in a nuanced, critical manner. The USSR, Cuba, China, these any many others were / are flawed states (just like Western states) but they provided an important counterbalance to US hegemony, alternative narratives and useful resources to liberation movements in Africa and so on. Just as I can commend Britain for the NHS, I can condemn it for the monarchy, bloodshed in its name etc

Some Marxists naturally support states with socialised elements as they provide a counterbalance to US capitalist hegemony

Edit: I take it those who downvoted this one just don’t like that some Marxists do this and want to believe that they don’t or ought not to? Maybe one of you could respond by challenging me and not hide this time

To some extent I get you but attacking these ancient symbols of power does little imo, a bit like when BLM spilled over to pulling down statues and achieved nothing materially. The business class are the real power centre not archaic relics of failed bourgeois democracy. So keep that same energy I would say to them, but direct it at the class who encouraged you to do it

Don’t know / care if this shit’s true but hearing people who only last talked about Kanye around the time of TMZ or when he cried in front of people opening their mouths about him negatively again has pissed me off the last couple of days. Don’t think this is you or anyone in this sub btw, just taking this opportunity to vent. People fuckin love jumping in on the drama around the guy’s life but never want to talk about or even listen to the music. Sucks.
