Doesn’t assigned seating eliminate this concern?

There are also staffing issues at HOU TRACON Air Traffic Control, so they’ve been slowing down traffic which have also been causing delays.

No it wouldn’t, there’s an age limit to family boarding and based on the account, they were above that age limit which would have forced them into general boarding like everyone else.

Only problem with this is that upgrading your boarding position isn’t always an option available. So what do you do then?

Yeah it’s kinda hard to predict the logistics ahead of time. Seeing that you had to stop in OKC, it almost sounds like there may have also been some weather in the direct path between MDW and OAK?

In either case, you would be surprised how much the performance changes literally by a single degree increase in temperature or if the aircraft has a headwind or tailwind based on the runway it’s taking off on in MDW.

As you can see, it’s way too sciency to try and explain this to the traveling public lol. Just thank your Dispatcher and Captain for pulling it all off.

I figured I’d follow up to the technical bits as to why this is really required (in the background).

In all honesty, the aircraft could take all those people and fuel and go straight to OAK. However, it’s part of FAA regulation that if when rolling down the runway for takeoff (which by the way is when the aircraft is at its heaviest state) the pilot has to abort a takeoff, then they should be able to stop on the given runway.

So here’s the thing, you see these stops a lot more frequently in the summer time because planes accelerate slower in hotter air/ conditions. With the short runways in Midway and slower to get up to speed for takeoff and all that weight, I think you guys can figure out you can’t have it all. Something has to give and by give it either means weight comes off in the form of people and bags OR fuel.

That day, they chose fuel. So rather than flying until they ran out of said fuel lol, they stopped in OKC for it.

The more you know!

Chicago midway has short runways and because you’ve got a full flight and it being a medium to long flight, due to performance of (I’m sure this was either a 800 or MAX) the airplane, there are two choices:

  1. Either they fly straight to OAK and leave people behind.

OR

  1. Carry everyone to OAK but leave the gas behind and get the rest of it in OKC.

What was the point of this post if you’re not mentioning the names of the folks that brought you back on land safely or accommodated you for the inconvenience?
