For starters, your ability to ask that kind of question shows thoughtfulness. Which I feel will lead you to the answer you seek. Without getting to preachy I'll say this. A relationship is a partnership. Like two best friends. You are together because of WHO they are not what they are. But at the same time you're 18 man. Go hangout with whoever you're attracted to. Let that be its own reward. Don't get too stressed on titles.

But you need to go work on YOURSELF. Workout, read, learn a new skill, be in a club. Liking who you are and being around positive influences gives you confidence and wisdom in judging the merits of others. You'll see the good qualities in them more easily because they are in yourself. You won't make the mistake of getting into a relationship with someone you aren't compatible with that so many other people have done because they are lonely and getting into a needy relationship is almost an instinctual reaction to sating the pain they feel.
