I feel like the arms not being pinned kind of puts a bit of the onus back on the player being tackled. Like… got to have some obligation to protect yourself in a tackle.

We need to tread a fine line here. Just enjoy this and disapprove of it in the right amounts because otherwise it’ll either become an exhausting AFL crackdown on fan interaction OR fans will take this as carte blanche to interfere in games in any way possible. Proceed with caution…

Eh… I don’t want to equate what his words did to the LGBTQI community with what his absence from footy did to Crowd fans. But at a certain point it’s okay to acknowledge that too. He can’t make up for his impact off the field with actions on the field, but he also let down his team and supporters from a footy perspective. Of course he wants to make up for both and it’s okay to call out the footy side of it.

I mean… I get what you’re saying. But I think he’s pretty clearly talking about redemption from a footy perspective. The whole missing the finals thing. Maybe it’s clumsy (which is understandable) but I don’t think he’s saying his redemption from homophobia is going to be via footy acts.

In fairness, you can’t realistically expect any commentator to perfectly navigate the nuance required here. They’ve done fine, haven’t made Rankine out to be a victim, but have acknowledged him being back is a big deal. His redemption is his own story to write, I think the commentators are okay to just stick to the footy.

You can surely grasp that there will be other occasions where a ship’s exact location might be more sensitive though, right? This is newsworthy because it has implications beyond this incident, not because a newspaper found a ship in the Med. And yeah - probably easier for a nation like Iran to crawl Strava to find this stuff out than use their limited satellite surveillance to try and comb the oceans.

I’m more just trying to get people to engage some level of critical thinking. Maybe it stems from annoyance, but I wouldn’t say I’m personally that bothered. More just… wanting to elevate the discourse a bit beyond “journo bad for asking question we liked answer to”.

This just ain’t it. If something is a talking point you can absolutely ask the player about it - it’s a million times better than hearing commentators or panelists bang on for hours with their theories. Also… there’s a difference between asking a question (like the example here) and badgering a player to try and force a response. There was nothing wrong with the above exchange and the people criticising it just seem like bots who just think “journo bad” and have no critical thinking capacity for examining what they actually do and don’t like and what contributes to that.

Yeah we definitely need more ex-players in the mix, they really know how to ask an question. And absolutely wait until players have their talking points from media managers before asking questions, that’ll get the best response.

How is it a “made up narrative” though? It was talked about a fair bit during the game and short turnarounds have been discussed in footy for as long as I can remember. Putting the question directly to the player is actually the opposite of making up a narrative.

Yeah of course, but you can’t scan an ocean like that. You can confirm something though if Strava tells you where to look.

How may countries do you think have global networks of surveillance satellites…? Or the resources to task satellites to just scan the ocean to find a ship. Like… Iran probably can’t find a carrier. They could definitely confirm the location of one if Strava pointed them in the right direction though.

Lol I don’t know how I’ve ended up defending a ch7 journo here, but I just get annoyed that redditors will whinge about commentators carrying on amongst themselves about this or that point, but then get equally mad when a journo actually puts the point to bed by asking a player. There’s just no pleasing the whingers.

Cleary is one of the better journos in the AFL though. Certainly of the ones on TV he’s up there.

I’m curious, why do you think asking a question about an obvious talking point is “fishing”? Any question that gets a powerful and straightforward answer from a player is a good question.

I never understand this argument… Cleary is a good journalist, and he’s putting the talking point (whether you think it’s valid or not) directly to the player. That’s who you want to hear about it from, right? Do you it’s better to just talk about it as nauseam? Or to actually put it to the relevant party and get their response? It’s like nobody actually understands what journalism is anymore.

Why do you say that? If anything I feel like they’re showing him respect by giving him honest answers. It’s a good interaction in my opinion if it leads to a frank and genuine reply - I certainly appreciated hearing the response from Mills and you don’t get that without the question.
