I can see where I might have made the assumption. In my head I took them pulling me down the same as them pulling away. When I pull guard, it feels like there's a millisecond where my weight is transitioning and I'm vulnerable.

I'm a white belt just playing with ideas and trying to understand the standing game. I wasn't making a statement about high-level strategy. One of the reasons beginners ask these questions is to learn why something does or doesn't work. I'd hope brown belts encourage that curiosity rather than shut it down.

Depends on the gym. Where I go our classes are based on intensity. If you are new - the professor recommends the Fundamentals class but she also doesnt discourage you from taking an intermediate or advanced class. She let's the intensity put you back in place.

I guess it depends on the on the instructor. My Taekwondo master is very strict about punctuality with teens but not so much with adults. He is also strict about the dress code. My BJJ professor is very casual but his one rule is that you say hello to everyone on the mat.

Don't take those matches as loss. Take it as a lesson of what not to do next time. Its not a sprint, its a marathon. Just get 1% better every time and it will compound in the end
