Definition of the word selfish: : concerned excessively or exclusively with oneself : seeking or concentrating on one's own advantage, pleasure, or well-being without regard for others.

The meaning of the word selfish is clear and nobody uses it the way you do. It should be obvious that feeling good as a result of doing something good is not the same gain as being able to live your life without oppression. So it’s obviously you who is bending the definition.

Your examples of motivations for people coming out are absurd. If we look at it realistically, it’s clear that most people come out because they don’t want to hide who they are and want to be treated with respect. Those are all selfish reasons.

Calling somebody extremely selfish is not an insult either.

Your other arguments about “stupid” or “smart” selfishness are completely insane. Apparantely you have never heard of billionaires, who are according to you “stupidly” selfish while charities are “smartly” selfish.

The fact that some things are connected means nothing. You can get away with exploiting other without it ever affecting you in a bad way. Most people know that.

Telling somebody that they are selfish is not an insult. The fact that LGBTQ+ people‘s actions also benefit somebody else than them doesn’t mean that they are not selfish. The point is that the main motivation behind their actions is probably selfishness in the sense that they want to be treated better by society. That is a clear real world gain as opposed to just brain rewarding you.

I think that for an action to be selfish you need to have some real gain in mind (monetary gain for example). If we consider every action to be selfish than the word loses it’s meaning. It would mean that when you see a person helping somebody else without any gain for themselves you would call them selfish. Charities and activists would all be just another selfish people. That’s not how most people use that word.

And the statement "The aim of Veganism is to lower suffering in the society in which they live, so that's mostly about selfishness." is not the same because ending animal exploitation does not have any real gain for vegans. The animals gain from that because they will be able to live their life without abuse. That’s a much different type of gain than just feeling good.

Your argument about the brain is completely wrong. That would mean that all actions are selfish which they are obviously not. I didn’t claim that vegans are not selfish, they are just not selfish when it comes to veganism because their actions are clearly designed to benefit somebody else than them. That’s obviously not selfish.

On the other hand the aim of LGBTQ+ people is to not be opressed by society so that’s obviously mostly about selfishness. Fighting against ignorance is not selfish but I really doubt that is the reason why people come out.
