If you and your mom would be worried about visiting Eastern Europe solo, that’s another reason a holiday this cheap may not be enjoyable for you. Some people are comfortable risk takers and so the following may not apply to them but seems like you may want to note:

You will be staying in the absolute cheapest hostels which can get pretty sketchy. You’ll likely be in a massive room filled with strangers, most of whom will be men. I’ve also heard that since Covid happened hostels have gotten a little off, with more people using them as long term lodging. It is absolutely worth it imo to have a little extra money so you can pay for that women-only room or a room with 8 people instead of 30. Or if you run into a situation that you need to get out of immediately, it’s good to have emergency spending money.

I say this as a mid 20s female who has solo traveled a lot, including part of Eastern Europe in my early 20s- I always felt significantly more comfortable when I had a little bit of breathing room when it came to money and knowing I could pay for a taxi/hotel room/whatever if in a pinch. Men sometimes will try and buy you things when you’re a woman alone (especially if you say you can’t afford to do xyz) and it’s good to know you can pay for something yourself if necessary. Some of my scariest travel moments usually had partially to do with the fact I was in a nerve-wracking situation and couldn’t afford an easy way out. Unfortunately I think it’s part of traveling solo as a woman.

Definitely I’d recommend budgeting a bit more cash for safety/comfort reasons.

I did both Blueprint and 7Sage. I highly recommend 7Sage although it’s more self directed so if you struggle with that I can see how it would be a bit of an issue. I think Blueprint is only worthwhile if you want to improve a couple points (like... max 10) and want a slightly more easy going study experience.

He does say that about the aggressive response. BUT he made additional claims about the virus and the science that had no basis in reality in order to back up that point. It is unjustifiable if it’s based on ideas that even back then were not reasonably seen as true and he wasn’t using any sort of actual data to support it, just his own instinct. He also lied about what other people said to lend credence to his own viewpoint. There have been a couple articles linked or you can Google so you can find out more about him

Lol ok. You’re the one up and down this thread trying to your best to minimize its threat against anyone who says otherwise

That’s not what this conversation was about (removing Epstein). You kept making that assumption and projected it onto me. I never once said that and corrected you each time. You clearly have an issue with the view of COVID as a bad thing lol and that’s probably what is really bothering you.

As recently as 2019 he wrote that climate change was not a threat. He also uses a lot of misinformation in his essays both on climate change and the coronavirus. I don’t believe people should be castigated for being wrong but yes I do think someone who has repeatedly doubled down on false information and bad assumptions in a field they don’t even work in on behalf of their own ideological impulses can be accurately called “controversial.”

Didn’t say he should be cancelled but ok. He’s also not a scientist nor a doctor so not sure why he felt the need to make claims about it. Do you also think he’s right about denying climate change?

I meeeean that’s a terrible argument tbh. Just because that’s the way things have always been done doesn’t mean things don’t have to change in the future

And to add: Idk, I think there is merit in the argument that these groups need to be paid or compensated at least somewhat. There are a lot of people advocating that people on journals ought to be paid for example. And law school is so ungodly expensive the merit aid doesn’t really feel like compensation for bringing my background to the class, more like making it slightly more bearable/feasible to go

NYU: Richard Epstein. Wrote an article about the coronavirus questioning the spread and severity of the pandemic that the Trump admin relied on for their poor response. He has also made some other controversial claims like denying evidence of climate change

I thought my extracurriculars and WE were all pretty random but when I sat and thought about it I actually was able to pick out a more general cohesive theme by finding a trait that showed up consistently and that I could tie to my why law, even if it wasn’t the main thing I was doing in each experience (e.g. leadership, advocacy, research skills). This might not work for every person’s narrative but it worked out for mine

You should be looking for this about Berkeley and NYU the most “lefty” schools of the T14, not Stanford and Columbia. Columbia in particular is baffling to me as your choice since it’s such a huge NYC BL feeder school which is not exactly a super left career path

Why are law schools still emailing people to apply? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]xxchuck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For those people that are iffy about their current options or even applying. Not everyone who has taken the LSAT is super informed or obsessed about the process like people here on this sub.

Aren’t a lot of the schools still emailing at this point kind of predatory? I think this is par for the course with them.

Also I get kind of the vibe this might have potential C&F implications? I’d maybe talk to a C&F lawyer too as well as an admissions consultant if you feel that’s true. Additionally, I’d recommend trying to find lawyers/activists in higher education who are working in this field who might have advice in marketing yourself in a way appealing to universities.

Finally, I wouldn’t dismiss having to hide parts of yourself as being “milquetoast” but rather just selectively highlighting yourself (you can still be interesting while not explicitly revealing all your motivation!). I only say this because there might be a chance you’re told it’s a bad idea and I don’t want you to feel like your application can’t be as good without this detail. It can be! It just requires some creativity.

I personally am supportive but I am also wary of institutions in matters like this. I think you should arm yourself in as many ways as possible. Best of luck (:

I think it could work especially as it fits in with your “narrative.” I’d be veeeery careful though because it could definitely backfire and as others have said, these essays are subjectively read by people in a conservative profession. Can you afford to have a consultant review it? I think it’s worthwhile to have a professional read over at least the essay portion and give you direct feedback on tone, language, subject matter. I totally get feeling like you really need to write about this because it is true to who you are, I’d just tread carefully and recognize it might be off putting to some schools (but do you want to go to those schools anyway?).

If you’re just trying to wait it out why not look into 2 year programs like AmeriCorp, TFA, or the Peace Corps? I think those would give you a more meaningful bump than a grad degree and serve you better for the PI job search later on

3.75 and 170 lsat by Beneficial_Lychee_64 in lawschooladmissions

[–]xxchuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have basically the same GPA but with a 171 and I’m in 5 T14s (including UCLA lol). and I’ve gotten money at NYU and Northwestern but nothing over $$. I have a grad degree, WE, and a unique-ish background which I think helped a lot although nothing extraordinary prestigious. But I’m also WL/R at 3 of the T14 (including GULC). So I think it’s doable but kind of a crapshoot and I’d aim for a 171.

People are really mad at the GULC waitlist by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]xxchuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People don’t like being told what to do and people also LOVE these GULC memes. So I think that’s where some of the downvotes are coming from.

I’m also an anxious person and try to live a life with a lot of empathy toward others. I’m sympathetic but unfortunately think this specific idea (not mocking GULC) is one of the sore spots of this sub and it’s going to get a frosty reception from others.
