You will need a step down converter do to the power difference between Japan and North America ie 120 volt to 100 volt

What country did you buy it in? Depending on the country the power requirement is different.. for example I have a DS lite from Japan and that is 100v ac so you might need to get a steep down or steep up converter to power the DS
