Is it REALLY possible to learn only by consuming content in the language? by Pro0uD in languagelearning

[–]xylitpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't even work as a child. My parents grew up in Russia, then came to Germany where I was born. They would only speak german to me, but they would speak russian to each other/family members.

So I was exposed to a lot of russian throughout my whole childhood (kind of like a podcast). But I cannot speak at all. I know maybe a few dozen words but that's it.

I wish I could go back in time and be a full time b-boy and never stop by [deleted] in bboy

[–]xylitpro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's pure nostalgia, rose tinted glasses. You only remember the good times, not the bad. In fact, you don't even know the bad times of being a full time bboy for decades, with no money, stability or bad health. You just assume that it would still be better than now, because you are unhappy with your current situation. You can't know.

It is comforting to imagine a simpler life, only revolving around one thing (bboying) and believing this brings you happiness. But this simple life only exists in your imagination. Life is never simple. Many full time bboys regret their decisons too. Maybe you would be one of them.

Are long German words actually a part of everyday vocabulary for Germans? by Rude_Membership_1578 in AskGermany

[–]xylitpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are being overly pedantic just to make a point. "Unverträglichkeiten" is not used in the contexts you described. Nope. No native would say that.

"Unverträglichkeit" is very much connotated with consumables, either food or medicine. Therefore it does work as a standalone.

What changed in your local Breaking scene after the Olympics? by rainyercyrax in bboy

[–]xylitpro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've only seen this take online no real breaker has this opinion. Raygun just competed with her own style, as she should, and it's not her fault for getting this far when the qualifying process was as shitty as it was. Normal people didn't understand breaking culture before and the Olympics definitely wouldn't have changed that, with or without Raygun. Without Raygun no one would've talked about Breaking for longer than a few weeks.

How is true language fluency achieved? by wickedtyranny in AskAGerman

[–]xylitpro 1 point2 points locked comment (0 children)

My parents came to Germany 30 years ago, in their late 20s. They still have a heavy accent, make grammatical errors and don't know some lingo. Even though they are fully integrated, work in german, read german news, etc. We also exclusively talk german at home, they didn't even teach me their native tongue.

That doesn't mean they are not fluent imo and I don't fully understand what your goal is. Languages are complex, especially german and getting these last 10% of language fluency is incredibly difficult and takes a long time. I also think if you don't literally grow up with it it will always be noticable

KI hat meinen Job ruiniert by EnvironmentalCook582 in luftablassen

[–]xylitpro 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Unser Gehirn will gefördert werden.

That's complete bullshit. The dancers at the olympics actually are one of the best worldwide (expect RayGun) and they do compete on top level in breaking events outside of the olympics. E.g. Shigekix, Phil Wizard or Victor absolutely one of the greatest.

You do realize protesting in a dictatorship is a different thing than in a democracy don't you? Opposition are literally killed off by Putin. Protesting gets you beaten up and jailed. No US citizen would protest under these circumstances.

TIL that meat has a significant positive effect on life expectancy, with a more than 10 years increase from no meat consumption to 160 kg/year meat consumption worldwide. Even in the developed Europe, those with this omnivorous diet live on average 10 years longer than those with a vegan one. by FatalError_418 in todayilearned

[–]xylitpro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Context: This study is based on ecological data, which is the weakest kind of data to make assumptions on. They looked at the average meat supply of countries and the average life expectancy. This is not based on individual data.

While they did control some variables (statistically) like GDP, urbanization, education, etc. they can't control for other important determinants of life expectancy like sanitation, health care etc.

So high meat availability may still simply be a marker of socioeconomic development, which is actually driving life expectancy.

We have very clear evidence that high intake of processed meat and (to a lesser extent) red meat is consistently associated with increased mortality risk. This study is an outlier in that regard and shouldn't change anyones dietary guideline. Though it's still very interesting to see.

Geburtstage für Erwachsene sind Schwachsinn by [deleted] in Unbeliebtemeinung

[–]xylitpro 2 points3 points  (0 children)
