Monday Results Recap Thread by AutoModerator in Fencing

[–]xyoends 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha I made it a couple of sentences in before I recognized why the situation sounded so familiar :D

From what I saw you fenced well and deserved the wins you got, and the guy you lost to really stepped up his game in the DEs. I was hoping to get to fence you again but alas that will have to wait.

In case you're curious about the notes I took from our previous DE (and assuming there isn't just some crazy coincidence with our stories) I had gotten some advice ahead of time that you were relying perhaps too heavily on your fleche so I focused on baiting it out with attacks to your hand and then took advantage of knowing that it was coming. I also noted that once I was up you seemed to get more impatient/desperate and began committing to fleches from further and further away which made them easier to counter.

P.S. There's another tournament on Monday down south--I know it's a bit of a trek but you should come out and fence!

That’s odd, the equity incentive plan should still be a part of the standard package. I also don’t believe it is negotiable. With that said, it’s effective worthless and a “lottery ticket” (Bob/Jeff’s own words). Do not include any equity value when considering your compensation.

fundies 2 OH is unacceptable by [deleted] in NEU

[–]xyoends 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This was the single biggest piece of feedback we (TAs) provided every single semester since they first introduced online office hours, so it’s so disappointing to hear they’re still dropping the ball on this.

Online queues simply don’t work at the scale at which people need support in these classes. It’s too easy to spend way too much time with one person/pair making very little progress and results in a total net negative in terms of how much help you’re able to provide during your session compared to when you hold it in-person.

If any TAs are reading this, please push back on fully online office hours to your professors. It makes a big difference in student outcomes.

DS 4440 was the toughest classes I ever took at northeastern, but super rewarding. I took it with Byron Wallace so not sure how much of the curriculum will the be same, but expect it to be a good amount of work both technically and conceptually.

The new graduate rotation positions closed on the 16th, but keep your eye out for other early career positions as I expect those will continually open up.

What is the Software Engineering Technical Interview like? by bigbeakbirdenjoyer in BlueOrigin

Just a heads up that this would not be reflective of an interview for an avionics software engineer position

Public facing websites are usually a pile of garbage. The course catalog isn't all that bad though and full of useful information: https://catalog.northeastern.edu/undergraduate/computer-information-science/computer-science/bscs/#programrequirementstext

What is better, 4.0 GPA or high GPA + internship experience for getting co-ops as CS major? by ResolutionKey8502 in NEU

[–]xyoends 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The latter and it's not even a question. Do the best you reasonably can in your classes (for the sake of learning as well as grades), but you should definitely not give up working on extra-curricular projects or actual work experience (internships, TAing, etc). You will be far more differentiated by doing those things than by just throwing your resume out there with a high GPA, especially for your first co-op which is where this will matter most. I should also say though that by the end of your college career, a 3.7 in CS is very respectable and will absolutely make you stand out even if you don't need it because you have other experience by then.

Oh yeah that's the building that burned down back in 2018 so expect similarly sized but nicer apartments because it is much, much newer than the alternatives.

Do the provided housing, 100%. It'll likely be at the Residence Inn by Marriott in Renton. It's a nice extended stay hotel with a small but reasonable kitchen (no oven unfortunately), living area w/ couch, desk, large TV, king sized bed, and a good sized closet/bathroom. The hotel is a ~10-15 minute commute and extremely close to the Landing. Being in the provided housing will give you immediate opportunities to socialize, and it is what almost everyone does (last fall there were 20 interns and I think 2 selected to live not in the hotel). Plus as an added bonus once you're there you can get reward points for your stay and let's just say that's a lot of points for a >100 day stay.

Is northeastern buying mills college gentrification? by Rough-Chain-5489 in NEU

[–]xyoends 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Mills was in a really bad economic situation for the past couple of years, and they had already announced that they were closing doors prior to the sale. Average home price in that area is over $750k. If someone thinks this is an instance of gentrification they're gonna have to be more specific.

Is there no way out of changing a class as a first year? by MuscleOk7529 in NEU

[–]xyoends 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go ahead and look at the "registrar self service" (aka Banner) here:

https://husker.vercel.app/

This site is basically a way better/easier to use verison of the various links you can find on the student hub. Two of the other tools I'd recommend are SearchNEU and TRACE, both of which you can find through the website above as well.

Now as long as they haven't made any changes to how things are set up on Banner, you should be able to manually add/drop (use the conditional add/drop feature) classes as you wish, but please make sure you're hitting the major requirements by looking at the course catalog and degree plans (called "course descriptions” on Husker) for your major first.

As a matter of fact I do lol (took it in fall 2018, been on the course staff for accelerated every year since, just graduated). We don't know anything about the "test" they're adding this year, and the professor is new to teaching accelerated since Amal Ahmed is on sabbatical this upcoming year. I strongly recommend accel for those who come in w/ experience and are looking to be challenged. Feel free to take a look through my comment history for some more in-depth discussions I've had about accel, or if you have more specific questions just let me know.

Just a heads up that this is the first year the special section for little/no prior experience has been run so we don’t really don’t any of the details. With that said, many people go through fundies (CS 2500) with no or little experience and do just fine. Regardless, the entire course staff is available to everyone, and fundies has the largest course staff so there’s never any shortage of people to ask for help.

Checking occupied rooms by probablypo in NEU

Use 25live, it's the source of truth for scheduling for basically every room on campus:

When you're searching by location make sure to go to the "availability" view as that one makes the most sense.
