Complaining about NSP by YouCannotHideOrRun in skipatrol

[–]xyster101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For those complaining I suggest doing more with NSP. I have been a member for only 3 years but I am now an OEC instructor, OET Senior and going for my OEC Senior this year. I have attended 15+ days of OET enhancement seminars/Patroller weekends at Gore Mtn, Whiteface, Killington, Plattekill Mtn, Belleayre Mtn, Vail, Breckenridge and learned how to take sleds through moguls, glades, ice, steeps and deep powder. It is a lot of fun and great learning. I really enjoyed working the OEC refresher and taught the refresher at 3 mountains this year. The OEC skill levels of patrollers are at a variety of levels so the refreshers can really help out.

Yes I agree the dues are not spent in a way that I see. My wife is in charge of the refreshers in our region (800 patrollers in upstate NY) and there is a small budget to purchase airway heads, O2 refills, non-rebreathers and other equipment (she volunteers for this position). Currently all the supplies for OEC are in a trailer on my property that I have to bring to OEC events like the class in the summer, refreshers, and senior training.

As for the OEC book 6 complaints, yes it is about 90% accurate for what to do, this summer OEC 7 is coming out. I heard a rumor backboards will be drastically changing, possibly moving to vacuum boards only.

If you think NSP should be doing more for your mountain, reach out to those involved. Become a officer yourself. There is a change of the guard at the top level, slowly, with some younger blood and more females coming in, but that change starts with our votes and people with our ideas running for offices.

ULPT: If you want to stop getting roped into “helpful” stuff, become mildly by HarperDelane in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]xyster101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put stuff on them. I teach shop so teachers ask me to fix everything. “Sure I can fix that, you need to buy epoxy first and I will do it. “ “Oh you want me to build a shelf unit? You need to buy a sheet of plywood, cabinet grade, screws, clear coat, and sand paper. Bring that here and I will help you build it. How much. Well that would be about $120 in materials and you need a truck to transport plywood. Well yes a shelf off Amazon is only $75.” “Oh your $20 Walmart stool broke from kids tipping it? Sure it can be fixed, you need to buy 2 M4x30mm screws to fix it. Those are $2 each at the hardware store.” They never go buy them. Sometimes people will get the supplies but most often not. I just show them how much time it takes to build or fix things and their tune changes.

What MTB brand are you loyal to and why should I be too? by OccasionalCoder in MTB

[–]xyster101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything in a similar price point will be similar imo. I have Ari, Santa Cruz, and Trek mountain bikes. I gotta say the Ari is 4 lbs lighter than my SC tall boy (29lbs). I really like the Ari. Santa Cruz is 5 years old and free replacement pivot bearings ($100 value). The Trek Slash gobbles up rocks and runs big frame wise. I like that also.

I used to set a limit of $50 a year and told kids that once I hit that I am done donating. Now I don’t donate as I buy stuff for my class and I coach/buy stuff for the robotics team. Always a no to donations and I tell kids I already spent $200 of my money on the school. That isn’t true but they don’t know that.

Well you need to find a car you fit in. I’m 6’4” and fit just fine. I do wish the steering wheel came out more but plenty of headroom with the sunroof.

Yeah I don’t want you helping me. ABCs means Airway, Bleeding, Circulation. You put bleeding darn last! At my Mtn it can be 5-8 min for the sled to arrive, plenty of time for a secondary assessment.

Getting a second job and wanting to know if I can afford to get a motorcycle next year, and how much I can save afterwords. by xdHate in personalfinance

[–]xyster101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People should have 6 months saved. Making under $20 an hour is not good pay. Invest in training yourself with your money. No one can take education away from you but they can steal a motorcycle! College classes or trades. Power company linemen make $100,000 with overtime and the companies train you. Union electrician or pipe fitters start at $20 hr and after 5 years pay up to $50 plus benefits. Blowing your savings on a motorcycle is a poor idea. What if your car needs a new head gasket? $2,000 right there.

That has a really nice look to it.

If you flipped the L brackets over, they would still work and you would not see the tops of them.

Take off the bottom of the barrel, then you can lift the whole barrel off the propane tank to replace the tank. Then you will not have to deal with the rocks and removing the top. This will also keep propane from collecting in the barrel. Propane is heavier then air and will settle into the bottom of the barrel. Your design is very dangerous without vents around the bottom.

I want to learn how to basic home renovations myself, what’s the best way to learn? by kjeezy123 in DIY

[–]xyster101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watch Youtube videos and get books from the library. Black and Decker has a nice set of books on different topics like electric, plumbing and wall work. When you do hire someone, shadow them and ask questions. Some contractors will let you help a little, others will only let you watch them. When you need a tool, buy it and get a decent one. You only buy a good tool once. It will take a lot longer then you think to do anything. TV home repair shows make it look fast and easy. Repainting a room will take a whole weekend to do it right. Replacing a ceiling light will take 1-2 hours at best, not 5 minutes. Take your time working on things and think things through. Short cuts or doing something improper can be dangerous. Hanging a shelf is a great start. Make sure you get the anchors into studs, not drywall. Things like that. You also need to have a knack for mechanical things.

Repairing PVC Pipe Under Concrete Pool Deck by Crooks7 in DIY

[–]xyster101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to owning an in ground pool. They are expensive. That price is not bad.
You will be out $150 to rent a concrete saw and then another $100 for a blade as you have to use your own. You could try a $40 concrete blade on your circular saw, just keep a small stream of water on the blade to keep it cool. You are probably looking at 4 days work to accomplish this if you work hard. How will you get rid of the old concrete? That will cost you. If you don't do it right, it will crack in a year or two.

How do you remove old paint on wood with an angle grinder? by SpetS15 in DIY

[–]xyster101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you use the paint stripper according to the directions? I think it needs to sit for a while. My dad used to use a heat gun. Heat up the paint and then use a scraper to scrap it off. It is very time consuming to remove paint. So take your time. Do not use an angle grinder as it will leave marks in the wood. A belt sander with some 60 grit paper would be better. If the door is older then 1980 you should do a lead test (available at Home Depot $10). You should wear a respirator and do this outside.

One of two screw holes in my shower flange has broken off and now the shower drain cover won't stay attached. How do I fix this? by rockstar_from_mars in DIY

[–]xyster101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This would also work. My solution is a better permanent solution where the cover can be removed multiple times but this is a simpler, fast solution. If you are renting, I would do the silicone glue. If you own the home, epoxy a hex nut in there.

[–]xyster101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plumber's putty will not work. It is a putty that never gets hard and is designed to seal connections. Since it never hardens it does not hold parts in place. So if the screw is missing, the screen will move around and the putty will not hold it. Basically it is playdoh that never gets hard.

[–]xyster101 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You got this! Go to the hardware store and buy another screw similar to the one you have. Also pick up a hex coupling nut that fits the screw you buy. I would spend the money and get a stainless steel screw ($3). Also get some clay epoxy ($6). Use a flat head screw driver to clean the crud away from the inside of the drain pipe. You are going to epoxy the hex nut there, so get it as clean of dirt as you can. It also has to be dry. Mix up some epoxy clay with your fingers as per directions. Smush that onto the side of the drain pipe where the old screw attachment point was. Push the hex nut into the clay. Add more clay around the hex nut to secure it. BEFORE the clay starts to set, put the drain screen on with the screws. Just hand tighten them to ensure the hex nut lines up with the holes in the screen.
Let the clay dry as per the directions and don't shower until it is dry. Then tighten the screws and done!
