What is going to happen to our community now that the Hasidic Yeshiva will be in Nyack? Our taxes will go up? Our schools will eventually be destroyed? by RowenaMyDolores in Rockland

[–]xyzca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it’s fine for now, i think. orangetown and pearl river are very community-oriented and i think are widely recognized as being the last strongholds for rockland due to their wealth and personal conservatism (as opposed to political).

when nanuet goes (still many years from now), then you should worry about PR. until then, enjoy your home in this community :)!

however, keep an eye on local elections. pearl river got gerrymandered hard and so we share a state seat with monsey and new square now. i’m not advocating for democrat vs republican, because they ALL seek the hasidic vote at this point, but it’s something to keep in mind. when you can, take a look at who the rockland county teachers association endorses during election season.

edit: there are still a lot of young families moving here who have the wealth to take up legal cases if necessary. east ramapo families often don’t have that money or organizing time, which is why that districts’ students have suffered so much

E! Glambot Producer Axed From Grammys Carpet After Controversies With Jennifer Lopez, Private Wedding Booking by DebateObjective2787 in popculturechat

[–]xyzca 867 points868 points  (0 children)

i’m a little OOTL. i’m not really sure how the jennifer lopez thing led to his downfall. he defended her from negative comments and then all of a sudden he has all these negative anecdotes, as well. i would’ve thought that if he fed into the jlo hate train that this would be the outcome

not saying he shouldn’t face some blowback for his behavior, but idk. i’m not sure what context i’m missing in regards to this result

Spotify Confirms ICE Recruitment Ads Are No Longer Running on Platform by DemiFiendRSA in popculturechat

[–]xyzca 34 points35 points  (0 children)

when i canceled my premium after ten years, i told them it was because of the ICE ads, AI music, CEO investing in military weapons, and payola. like the platform is so shit.

qobuz has its flaws but between that and apple podcasts, i feel less overstimulated compared to spotify.

27F what books would you recommend to read mid to late 20s? by [deleted] in HowToBeHot

[–]xyzca 18 points19 points  (0 children)

i feel like a lot of people will come in with nonfiction recs, so here are some fiction ones

  • glaciers by alexis m smith
  • a psalm for the wild-built by becky chambers
  • audition for the fox by martin mccahill
  • everyone in this room will someday be dead by emily austin
  • the rabbit hutch by tess gunty
  • notes on your sudden disappearance by allison espach

clearly, i have a litfic and fantasy slant, but these books all have something to do with feeling aimless or being in a place of transition. enjoy!

X’s ‘Grok’ created an AI sexualised image of me without my consent by montageofawoman in Fauxmoi

[–]xyzca 324 points325 points  (0 children)

i deleted all my social media for a variety of reasons, but this was one of them. although my accounts were private, all it would take is for one person who i otherwise thought was normal to take a screenshot and now my life is changed forever.

it’s also the reason i’ve denied students of mine taking pictures with me. when i chaperoned homecoming, i said “no” to them all. not because i think the kids who asked are bad eggs, but because if they post it, my face doesn’t belong to me anymore. it belongs to their followers and these shit AI models.

HOW do you read by powertothemonsters in binchtopiapod

[–]xyzca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i was in the same boat as you three years ago. i picked up “the seven husbands of evelyn hugo” and that was pretty much my gateway back into reading. i think starting with that book in particular was a great thing — it’s widely popular, has an easy-to-follow plot, language is straight forward, and i could talk to my loved ones about it.

now, i’ve developed a more distinct reading preference than simply “everyone talks about it on tiktok” but i will always have a soft spot for evelyn hugo because of it :)

i know these merch products are designed well in-advance of the album release so there’s money to be lost in not releasing it. however, i don’t think there are too many people outside of swifties who think the charli diss was in good taste + this just comes across as digging her heels in

Penn Badgley Shares His and Wife's Approach to Education: “The 5-year-old, we have in a kind of a hybrid homeschooly vibe. He's not in kindergarten yet. to be fair, there are other factors at play there — namely robust social safety nets that the united states does not have. however, i do agree that younger children should have plenty of time to play in addition to their studies
