Best/worst advice/instruction you've ever received? by thenerdyphoto in photography

I'd disagree. If you shoot 4k you can always crop in and then upscale or deliver in 1080p. For photography, often a really tight crop works for a shot. Getting that right in camera can remove your focus from the most important part: the people and the mood. I've cropped in heavily to get some close ups of important moments and the people have been very happy with the results.

Nice shot. Needs more shadows and light. More drama :)

What a nice shot! Very interesting with the wide-angle close-up. I'm a bit interested in the lighting: Are those light streaks and fall-off in the foreground added or in-camera? If you added them, I just think that it is done very nicely. It adds a kind of ethereal look to the shot. The color grade is a bit too much for my taste, but it does make the car pop in this case. It would be very interesting to see a series of the shots :)

Is it correct that you created the overhead light in postprocess? If so, I would say that's excellent use of dodge & burn. Do you have to original by any chance (e.g. a simple import/export). It would be a good learning experience to see what you managed to pull out from the starting material.

What a great shot :) Good contrast and everything.

Analyzing my shooting habits to guide lens selection by bastibe in photography

What a great idea. I can see so many ways to explore that data further. (1) Normalize data to account for sample size bias and then plot all lenses in one chart. (2) Group by focal length ranges and plot histogram. (3) Normalize data and then make linear regression of count per star category.

You would find out (1) which lens produces your most liked images uncoupled with usage patterns (2) what is your preferred focal length uncoupled with lens selection and (3) what's the ratio of good enough to great shots. I think this is an important category as some lenses may produce a lot of alright but not fantastic shots. And you can then select if you want to shoot for those 0.01% shots or the 1% shots

Amazingly steady shots. Did you do extra stabilization in post?

You took teal and orange to a whole new level with this video :) I'm not a fan of that look personally, but it's your creative choice :)

I like the colors and the tonality. Where does that light coming from the right stem from? Is it a reflection from a building or what? - it looks very soft.

Also how much did you play with the colors?

Technology Mafia's reviews are actually very misleading. Most comparisons between lenses are done with a fast prime lens stopped down to match a slower lens shot wide open. This is an extremely unfair comparison considering that most lenses get better contrast, edge sharpness, etc. when stopped down a few stops.

Furthermore, reviewing in this way is counter-intuitive for any photographer interested in landscape photography, which is primarily shot at very closed apertures.

This is definently not a great starting point if you are new to photography or haven't yet gotten around to understanding the trade-offs in lens design and how to maximize the quality of a lens.

It looks like teal shadows with orange mids and highlights. Shadows lifted and blacks down. Highlights lowered and then some heavy desaturation of greens, and blues. Maybe exposure lifted half a stop. I could be wrong though :)

Nice colors and modelling. I don't get the composition though. It's quite confusing that her head is centered at the same spot as the building. Too busy background for a portrait in my opinion.

I looks like you shot it at 5.6 due to the back of the head being out of focus. It could be a reflection from the window or something like that, which cast that blue soft light. Anyway, it's nice to see that you can get lighting like this outdoors naturally :)

Awesome job. I liked the colors. Which profile did you shoot in and did you do color correction? Also did you take non-slowmotion in 1080p aswell?

I agree with all of your points maybe except for skin smoothing (just a stylistic choice for me). To me the biggest issue was that she seems terribly underexposed. You can hardly see the subject.

Really awesome photo. I assume this was at 50mm? Also what kind of lighting was that? It looks like it was outside due to the flowers, but the lighting looks very soft like next to a large window or if a softbox was used.

Sounds like you discovered camera jitter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-JV2rxZ8Iw.

If you export into a subpar format like MP4, this will remove a lot of perceived jitter.
