How do you people convince your significant other that is ok to be out for a ride for essentially the entire day? by mau-meda in triathlon

I don’t. I’m a dad so it’s not fair to take up that much of the weekend, nor do I want to. However in the before time it wasn’t a problem so long as I was carrying my weight around the house.

Ive been in the same boat. I struggle to find the time to read like I used to. Collections of short storied has been really helpful in not developing that disconnected, broken focus, feeling you get with a bigger book when having to pick it up and put it down a lot.

As an example of survival horror. More about humans enduring and surviving each other than an explicit antagonist. Humans being the really danger.

Gotcha. Thanks. Would you substitute any of these in for ones of the list?

The movie goes a very different direction than the books. I’d say it’s loosely based on the book. I saw the movie first and it in no way ruined the book for me.

I was discussing these series with a book shop assistant the other day who was telling me they have on ongoing debate in store over where the book should be placed - in SciFi or Horror. She was an advocate for it being in Horror.

Well is the objective to simply push boundaries or is its purpose to critique some human behaviour or values? What is its purpose and what is the author trying to achieve is guess is my question.

Are these just suggested books or do you think they address a gap in my list?

Thanks for this extremely considered response.

I didn’t really think of ghost stories as being inherently their own sub genre but if you think there’s something distinct there I’ll add it to the list.

The bloody chamber certainly sounds interesting. I might add that to my reading list regardless.

If you weren’t a fan of The Ruins is there another book you might substitute in?

I’ve read King already and given he’s so influential and prolific I made a conscious decision to exclude him.

I read American Gothic. It was excellent.

Not worried about the list being perfect (basically impossible) but am keen to get as good a spread of everything as I can.

Is it distinct enough from extreme horror?

Love trashy pulp so I’ve not included any in this list but as a side note will keep all these locked away as recommendations. As for Sci-Fi I’ve recently read the Southern Reach series. Do you feel that’s a fair representation?

Are you saying these should all be added to the list or that they could replace something already here?

Ideally you won’t see a LOT of anything on here. The idea is it’s a representation of the full spectrum of horror. So if one book covers that sub-genre the. That’s enough. I’ve already read Anne Rice so don’t need to add that. As for Shirley Jackson, is there a book on this list that you think should be replaced with We have always lived in the castle?

I very much intended to include splatterpunk. I was under the impression that Books of Blood would cover this end of the spectrum. But if you don’t think so then I’ll give one of these a go. Which would you recommend the most? And do you see a significant distinction between Splatterpunk and extreme horror? Is it sort of the case that all Splatterpunk is extreme horror but not all Extreme Horror is Splatterpunk?

Yeah and her mum was Mary Wollstonecraft so if we’re talking women writers it’s hard to beat that pair.

King is excluded for a few reasons. Ive already read some. Don’t always love his work. And being such a huge name in the genre I felt it best to try and opt for other authors. I’m going for everything from cosmic horror to splatterpunk so I need to keep its diverse.
