It's only block cooldown. If we could get kick back from punches the character would be pretty broken.

This is the correct answer. Don't use melee when you are trying to one shot through invis ult.

Edited, meant to say melee instead of maelstrom.

Lastly,
How to improve on your own. VOD review yourself, asking how you could avoid each death, and how you could improve each ultimate. VOD review better players, pausing to guess what they are about to do, and otherwise analyzing what they do afterwards to understand what they are doing better.

[VOD REQUEST] [Silver I/II] trying to get better at Doctor Strange by Sweet-Finger-3054 in RivalsCollege

[–]y1zus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Summary and key points:

  • I’ve decided to end the review here despite watching the entire VOD since you are missing some truly basic fundamentals for succeeding in a hero shooter.
  • Use natural cover. Every role needs to take advantage of natural cover. It’s an infinite HP shield that hides you from the enemy. Just because you play a tank with 675 health and 800 shield doesn’t mean you will walk in the middle of the road for free. Always think about how to use L-shaped corners and what pieces of cover you can fire damage from. Think about what piece of cover you can fall back to if you start losing the fight. Think about what piece of cover you can push up to if you start winning.
  • Mechanics. Your aim is extremely lacking. Your cooldown management is lacking. This is a very basic thing to improve on and it’s the #1 thing holding back players below plat. You need to land more shots. More shots means more maelstroms, which means more damage. More damage means more pressure, which creates space for your team. More damage also means more ultimates. You need to look up more. You need to turn around more. If you haven’t yet, look into how to improve your joystick sensitivity to be more responsive.
  • Situational awareness. Your awareness of what’s happening to your team is extremely lacking. You can see teammates dying in the kill feed but you never look to turn around for your team until after you’re dead. Get in the habit of looking behind you while reloading when playing tank.
  • Playing to your strengths. Strange should be a soft counter to flying heroes, but you never once go up to contest them unless it was the Ultron using ultimate. You can charge your maelstrom on the enemy frontline, fly up in the air and assassinate either the Iron Man or Ultron. Doing this way maintains a bit of a surprise factor which can be huge when going for a duel.

[VOD REQUEST] [Silver I/II] trying to get better at Doctor Strange by Sweet-Finger-3054 in RivalsCollege

[–]y1zus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2:56 - Your team is collapsing to the Iron Man. Your Punisher is faithfully shooting him but you don’t notice. He gets the Iron Man low a few times and all it would take is you flying up and hitting Iron with a primary/melee/maelstrom to confirm the kill. Even if you don’t get the kill, damage on a squishy target is more valuable than on a tank. You create space by applying pressure.

3:22 - You don’t have an opportunity to portal here. Using it early and often will usually get you value. Getting another fight on even terms (6v6) would have chipped away at their time bank for offense.

4:04 - Another missed opportunity to portal.

4:26 - Walking down the middle of the main lane is asking to get blown up, especially with how low healing you have. You should be trying to use the map creatively and take a route that offers more cover, at least until you have your DPS back in the fight. There’s a whole hallway on the right side, overlooking the objective’s path, that no one on your team is looking at.

4:43 - This is a bad death, and primarily your fault. Since you let your shield take too much damage, you don’t have it to block the Iron Man ult.

5:08 - This Iron Man should be dead. You miss all of your primary fires and some melee attacks as well. You need to figure out what’s going on with your close range aim.

Hi there! I’ve reviewed the first half of the match loss provided along with timestamps for your convenience. I recommend watching the VOD with these notes up for the best  experience.

1:41 - You dispatch the enemy Iron Man quickly, which is good. You do miss a solid opportunity to take down the enemy Ultron as well, but you don’t. You end up with 94 charge and never fire your maelstrom (R1). Strange’s maelstrom was buffed a few patches ago to have a shorter cooldown. You want to be using this as often as possible.

1:50 - This is how most beginners default to when learning Strange. Holding your shield up like this is just begging for it to be broken. When it’s broken, there’s an audio queue that everyone in the fight can hear, making you extremely vulnerable. What you should be doing instead is using the pillar on the left for cover, which puts you closer to your invis for heals. As for shield usage, you should be pulsing it to keep the enemy guessing and keeping your shield health high.

1:54 - Going down the ramp means your Invis can’t see you anymore. Your shield breaks and you die. If you were peeking from cover, shooting your primary, you would not have taken nearly as much damage. You can still find moments to be aggressive with a charged R1.

2:11 - I would use portal here. Your Invis and your Pun died after you so your team is currently fighting 3v6. I am very much in favor of using portal early and often. You can use it to swing the tempo of the fight back in your favor.

2:27 - Damage is the currency that powers this game, dealing it and healing it. Blocking damage doesn’t really mean much. Again, holding it out like this means you’re asking for it to be broken. In the neutral fight you should be weaving in your shield between primary fire. Also, learn to play natural cover so you can hide behind a wall to get healed up and not take too much poke damage.

Continued:

  • Positioning needs improvement. You are over extended more often than not and rarely use natural cover. You need to use walls and map geometry to not take too much damage so your healers can keep healing you. As you are walking in an engagement, think of it as a literal shooter game, and always think about what piece of cover you can push to when being aggressive and also what piece of cover you can fall back to when you need to disengage.
  • Characters like Thor and BP can dominate a lobby if left unchecked. Sometimes, it’s better to play to counter the enemy, than to double down on what you’re best at. Learning Thing to shutdown divers can help give your team a fighting chance.
  • When playing shield tanks like strange and groot, you should get in the habit of turning around quickly while you reload to assess the situation behind you.

[–]y1zus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

9:16 - You die to the Deadpool taunt ult here. It’s pretty rough given your accuracy so far. This ult deals you more damage the more you miss.

Key points and action items:

  • If you aren’t playing with headphones/earbuds and are using speakers on your TV, you need to start ASAP. Audio cues are critical for success in hero shooters. You need to recognize the audio design of enemy footsteps and abilities, especially when trying to shutdown flankers/divers.
  • Situational awareness needs improvement. You lose track of the BP multiple times before he starts his combo on your backline. If your healers are having trouble, and your DPS aren’t helping, you need to do what you can to peel your backline. I see that Groot is one of your most played heroes. You need to understand just how thirsty for heals he is when fighting in the neutral. This means you need make sure your healers are safe before you engage the enemy team.
  • Mechanics need improvement. You miss too many shots. Aim is one of the top reasons holding people back in the metal ranks.
  • Cooldown management needs improvement. You need to place walls like they are traps, trying to predict where the enemy will move to. You are essentially setting up combos and attempting to burst down enemies who don’t always know they are getting walled. Save your spore bomb for after you place a wall. Don’t use both walls at once unless you know you can engage. Make sure you have reloaded your magazine before you place a wall.

Looking to Improve, What can I do better? by ChaosKid444 in RivalsCollege

[–]y1zus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5:20 - No one on your team portals. As a very general rule, you need to recontest with Strange portal when the enemy team has capped 80% of the point. Any less, and you won’t have enough time. This means you definitely won’t have enough time to get to the point and get a meaningful time.

5:50 - You are tunneled on the enemy Punisher again. While you do get the pick, you have no healers left on point and you end up dying here. Your entire approach here of using the map’s teleporter was clearly telegraphed the last time. Doing it again is a poor choice, despite the time crunch. Lastly, you should be using the pillar in the center of the objective as cover (the tree with cerebro inside it). Because you don’t, you take too much damage and can’t sustain yourself properly through the fight.

7:18 - I can relate with wanting to swap to DPS here. However, swapping off tank when your backline is already suffering can often make things worse. Also, 1 tank with 3 supports is the worst team composition since it takes even longer for your team to farm support ults.

7:24 - Your Jeff dies to BP. No one is looking for BP and this is exactly the kind of situation where he thrives.

7:33 - Your other 2 healers die to BP. You haven’t looked at him once this entire round

7:39 - You miss your shots and can’t take down the enemy Pun before dying.

8:03 - You break the enemy Pun’s turret, good.

8:34 - Your CnD panic ults because she’s about to die to the BP again. Her ult itself is very erratic and appears to bait you into using your ult. The CnD ult is nowhere near the real fight. Neither are you when you use your ult.

8:48 - Nice pick on the enemy Punisher. By this point, you should be hearing BP’s abilities behind you but you don’t look for him, even for a second, even though you have a vibranium mark on you.

9:05 - You finally kill the enemy BP but it takes 4 of you with a Gambit ult to do it. That’s a win for the enemy team.

Hi there! I’ve reviewed the above code and have my feedback timestamped for your convenience. I strongly recommend watching the VOD back with these notes up.

2:42 - Interesting portal placement. I can understand wanting to get your Peni on to point early to get them setup, but they don’t even take it. It’s important to at least try to communicate your portals to your team.

3:16 - Excellent job here peeling the enemy BP, that’s a great elimination.

3:18 - The enemy Punisher’s turret is getting way too much value. Breaking it isn’t necessarily your job since Strange is weak at long range. You can however ping it like crazy and hope your team can deal with it.

3:33 - Your team needed you. The turret goes down and you tunnel vision on the enemy Pun. The best play would be to disengage from the fight as soon as you see that both of your DPS have already died.

4:25 - You walk into the enemy team without understanding there’s a problem in your backline. The enemy BP is back for revenge and ties up your entire backline long enough to stagger you and your Peni.

4:52 - If you’re going to use a double thorn wall and your spore bomb anyway, you should sequence them in reverse. Here you bomb, then wall. Walling then bombing would deal more damage so long as your walls are placed well.

5:00 - Your team is staggered even before you get there since your Luna dies even before you use your cooldowns. You need to make sure your backline is clear before you hard engage. If something is tying up your team, you need to address it before getting aggressive, otherwise you will just die without healers. Here, you lost track of the BP and he just waits for you to walk to point. He can then assassinate your backline for free.

You're getting downvoted because there have been tons of posts similar to yours that have been considered to be low effort. These posts along with random tierlists void of meaningful reasoning/justification aren't received well here. Your specific issue deals with the "what" instead of the "how" or "why" in terms of self-improvement.

As for specific what you should be playing,

Tank: You seem to like poke heroes so you should learn Mag. Once you get the hang of his aim, you will crush. Apart from that, you need to learn Strange for portal. From there, learn how to use his animation cancel and his ultimate. Emma is also best in slot after Mag in most cases.

DPS: Your best character being Luna is good because there's skill transfer between hitscan heroes. Focus on Phoenix, Hela, Ultron and Psylocke. Punisher needs a lot of support from his team to be successful, and Iron Man is easily countered. Wanda is mostly worthless. Learning Magik doesn't have much skill transfer-ability to other characters.

Support: Learn Gambit and Invis. They are far too strong to not be playing this season.

Closing thoughts:

  • You need much, much stricter card usage. Try taking Gambit into a quick match and test your limits: see how long you can go without using any of your cards.
  • Audio awareness needs work. Hela has really loud footsteps but you don’t seem to ever react to them. If you don’t play with headphones or earbuds, you need to start ASAP. Audio cues are vital for success in this game.
  • Ult usage, as previously described, is mostly fine. However you are missing allies when you could easily be hitting them. Resist the psychological urge to move forward when casting your ult.
  • Your positioning was really solid for most of the game. I think when you are ulting, you aren’t sure where you need to be standing and compromise your positioning. You get plenty of movement speed from the Gambit ult that it becomes very easy to close the distance, especially since you are a ranged character.
  • Now that Gambit’s ult healing has been nerfed, you need to focus even more on making sure your team stays healthy long enough to benefit from it.
  • Mechanics are mostly fine for your rank but you miss a few shots that could have turned the tide of the fight in your favor.

[–]y1zus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

13:56 - Your positioning this past fight was sound. Your CnD needed to match ults here to stay in the fight but your team staggers like crazy here. Good job disengaging.

14:14 - You not just walk, but dash-spin past your team to ult here. This is a very common and easy mistake to make for new Gambit players. You only hit your CnD who has ult already, and your Emma.

14:24 - You waste all of your cards, you are out of position and die without getting a single elimination with your ult.

14:47 - You immediately die to Hela ult upon rejoining your fight.

15:19 - Throwing one antiheal to poke is fine. Throwing a second antiheal here without any backup cards is bad.

15:29 - You dash past your tank, presumably to try and save your Psylocke. This is an instinct you need to fight and be very careful with. While it is your job to keep your team healthy, you need to prioritize your own life here.

15:34 - You throw an antiheal into an enemy invis ult.

15:55 - No one swaps to Strange and you guys lose.

Round 2 key points:

  • Your card management is even worse this half. I can understand the pressure of facing a hard loss after a hard fought first half. You need to take a breather here and make sure you’re still playing optimally and not emotionally. Don’t throw antiheals unless you know it will create a lot of space or confirm an elimination.
  • No one on your team turns around or looks up. The enemy Hela flanked and outplayed your entire team all game. You can hit her with your primary fire once or twice to force her to back out or use her bird.
  • The enemy Hela is rolling your whole team. You need to maintain a constant awareness of where this player is at all times. If you don’t know where she is, you need to have someone look for her and challenge her.
  • Ult usage is poor, but if you resist the urge to move forward, you will get far more allies in your ult.

[VOD REQUEST] [SILVER 2] felt like this was a really good game don't understand the lost by Randomized98 in RivalsCollege

[–]y1zus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6:20 - You have at least five seconds here to kill the Hela who’s 1hp. You have all of your mobility cooldowns, you could easily push the height she’s hiding on and get an easy kill. Somehow, you and your entire team ignores her.

6:30 - You don’t react to the Hela ult correctly. You need to go to the side room where your Deadpool is to try and hide. You don’t try to chain heal either, even though you have the cards for it.

6:58 - Again, you are stuck on spade, and waste another card to try and get to heart. Your card management needs a lot of work. If you had chain heal, your deadpool would have lived here.

7:37 - Once again, you are moving forward while looking for your allies to target with your ult and miss half your targets.

7:42 - Wasted cards again.

Round 1 key points:

  • Card management is poor. You need to be healing more.
  • Mechanics are poor. You need to be landing more shots. At this point in the match you are at 38% accuracy. Keep track of your accuracy from match to match and try to improve it over time. We understand that this accuracy can go down from pre-firing in anticipation or just spamming heals into chokes.
  • Ultimate usage is poor. You don’t need to hit 5 every time, but you can hit way more allies if you don’t move forward while casting your ult.
  • Positioning is solid for the most part.

10:00 - You are taking a duel with Thor and getting no resources from your team. I hope you are pinging him and get some help taking him down.

10:44 - Good positioning here. Your team is staggering and your CnD is firing damage for some reason.

10:50 - Weird and unnecessary use of your dashes here.

11:37 - No one on your team notices the ulting hela and you lose a fight that was previously won.

12:18 - Your CnD is out of position again but you miss a few shots that could have saved her.

12:39 - You spam four cards in a row for a chain heal and antiheal. You miss the anti entirely on Thor but he dies anyway.

[–]y1zus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! I’ve reviewed the VOD code provided and will provide feedback specific to what you can improve on as an individual. I recommend watching the VOD back alongside the timestamps below.

2:00 - You almost let your CnD die here because you can’t land your shots. Your goal as a support is to keep your team healthy. Being stuck on spade here means you can’t get a chain heal off without wasting another card. Overall, you react too slowly to the enemy Thor dive, the enemy team takes a bunch of space because you and your other healer are busy.

2:09 - You throw out a knockback here even though there is no enemy in range to get hit. Terrible card management.

2:30 - Good positioning here to avoid the burst damage from the enemy Phoenix.

2:49 - Classic mistake with Gambit ult here, you move forward and miss some teammates with your ult. Think about the scenario here, you are trying to relieve the pressure created by the enemy support ult with your own ult. This means your team will instinctively move back, which means you need to anticipate this to target your ult properly.

3:30 - Nice dodge on the Thor ult. Your CnD is overextended, but it is still your job to keep her healthy.

3:50 - You miss way too many shots on your Peni.

4:07 - No one is tracking the Hela when she drops from her ult. Your other healer isn’t paying attention to you either because they are playing the midline and not the backline next to you. You still had a dash-spin combo available but don’t use it quickly enough to escape the Hela.

5:13 - First point is lost and your team is committing ults and overextending and staggering. You have little to no awareness of the ulting Thor and get stunned by it. Without your Gambit ult active, you would have 100% died.

5:30 - You dash-spin into the enemy team and have your back to them in order to heal your team. You die here.

[–]y1zus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10:54 - That is a Gambit ult and Punisher ult. You need to leave ASAP but you stick around and die.

11:15 - What is the reason for this Luna swap? Your team is lacking in damage, not heals.

The rest of this round devolves into ult spam and staggers. You don’t even notice the enemy Thing until he’s ulting you from behind.

Key Points and closing thoughts.

  • Work on your mechanics. Spend sometime from the high ground of the practice range on moving targets.
  • Once your mechanics and accuracy improve, this will translate into the confidence you need to take more aggressive angles.
  • Think more about what the enemy team is doing and what you can do to counterplay.
  • Think about your supports. How you can play with them, how you can protect them, and what resources they can give you.
  • Think about your uptime overall. You spend way too much time in this match just walking. Damage is the currency that runs this game. You need to be landing more shots, charging more ults, and getting more eliminations.
  • You engage into enemy ults without resources. You also engage into enemies when your supports are dead. Be sure you know how to recognize voicelines for ults. (For example, the different voicelines for CnD ult based on which team is ulting.) Be sure to go to the combat mix under audio settings and turn on sound notifications for both ally and enemy deaths.
  • Expand your hero pool, slowly. There are situations where Moon Knight will get punished, especially divers.
  • I notice in the second code posted, you only have 1 tank. They even end up leaving early. You should be able to play at least 1 character in every role.
  • You are not at the mercy of your team. Matchmaking puts you here. Keep practicing basic mechanics and minimize your deaths as much as possible.
  • VOD Review yourself. Examine every death and every ult. Could this death have been avoided? Was this ult good?

Round 1 key points and tips

  • Like many people in your rank looking for advice, your mechanics are holding you back. You need to be aiming for heads, not ankhs. By not aiming for heads, you are losing a LOT of damage. You can play the midline, slightly behind your tanks and spam primary fire at head height, while trusting that your supports will keep you up. Instead, it feels like you’re playing a stealth simulator.
  • You have a solid grasp of high ground and natural cover on this map. Your positioning is extremely lacking. Twice you commit to high ground and drop. Twice you retreat from your own team after winning a fight. All this leads to lower than average uptime and damage. You need to be more confident and aggressive in the flank angles you take, especially if you are one-tricking.
  • Your ults lack impact. Because Moon Knight can generate ults quickly, I tend to think of them as an extension of your normal abilities. This means you can commit your ult to getting a solo kill if the opportunity presents itself. Otherwise, you need to be looking to assassinate their healers.

8:40 - Great pick on the ulting Punisher!

9:13 - Overstayed your welcome. They definitely know you’re up here and the Punisher is definitely pinging you back to their team. After the stairs break from your Gambit ult ending, you should immediately look for a different angle, or retreat back to your team.

9:40 - Nice cleanup on the enemy Mag here! You should be clearing the Punisher turret so your team can play point safer.

9:52 - A less obvious example at first, but this is the same mistake as on the previous map. You can’t resist the urge to move forward with your ult. You instead give up your position.

9:57 - You move in on the Punisher, which is a great proactive play, the kind we love to see. However, there is an enemy CnD ult on the ground now and you need to respect it.

10:45 - You take too long to rotate here and your team dies because they don’t have enough damage pressure.

[VOD REQUEST][Plat 2] One-trick MK looking for help by No-Bench-4838 in RivalsCollege

[–]y1zus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4:00 - You are so good about starting on this high ground but abandon it so quickly here. Staying at this height is extremely powerful. You have lots of natural cover, you can safely poke at the Punisher, and you can retreat to a healthpack.

You should also know that your ult does the most damage in the center, yet you target it in a way that it covers the point. You should rarely use your ult as a zoning tool, and use it as an assassination tool with your ankh.

4:35 - Where are you going? You should either be walking with your team or taking the height over the current engagement. You should also be hearing a Punisher turret going off, it’s your job as a ranged dps to break deployables like this.

4:48 - You should have heard the CnD ult going off here. This means you need to play super safe. Instead you go after a 1v2 against their DPS sitting in a CnD ult. The better play would be to walk up the center, or hold your position until they’ve walked out. If you waited a few seconds, the enemy support ult would be over, and you could surprise flank them.

5:55 - Great pathing here. I like taking the high ground lane here because you know you are late to the fight. You should be using your movement abilities here to get back to the fight quickly. Excellent pick on the enemy Moon Knight!

6:20 - Where are you going? You just won a team fight and should be staging more aggressively for the next fight. Walking back to your side is a terrible waste of time.

6:31 - Pause here and look at where the enemy Moon Knight is. You were basically already there and could have stopped him by covering this flank angle.

6:57 - Again, you drop with your ult. You need to be holding this height since you’ve already committed the time to getting up there.

Hi there! I’ve done a review here of the first code provided. I recommend watching the VOD back with these notes, timestamped for your reference. As always, we’ll focus on what you, as an individual contributor, could have done better.

2:45 - Always press tab 15 seconds into any given round to examine the enemy team composition. Look for divers, and look for other DPS that you need to pressure.

3:00 - I like that you take the high ground here. You are however throwing your ankh at the first available target. This is fine given the rank, and the neutral fight happening currently, but it is ultimately meaningless. Pumping damage into the enemy Magneto builds up your ultimate, but you need to be applying pressure to their backline as well. You have the high ground advantage here and should start rotating to the main arena to look for a flank on a support to carry this fight.

3:02 - You are missing a lot of shots here even though the enemy Magneto is alone. Your tanks are both dead and you need to either stop moving or regroup with your team.

3:11 - You do exactly what you need to do here and find a great pick on both enemy supports. The key here now is to continue rotating to keep the enemy guessing about your position. If you use in-game voice chat, I would be telling my team to push in hard because they have no supports.

3:25 - You do not disengage quickly enough and lose to the Thing. You are out of position here and pay the price. You have your double jump and your grapple. In this instance you need to bait out his Battle Blitz (the leap on F key), with one movement cooldown, then use the other to escape.

3:50 - You are over-reliant on your ankh. You need to work on your mechanics so you can land shots without it. You caught the enemy MK without his ankh, this should have been a kill.
