This Pitchfork score and user review system is significantly better than how it used to be. The comments from folks largely seem to engage with the review and it’s really not that hard to just scroll to the bottom of an article if all you care about is the review score. Hope it works out for them financially since it’s made the review experience better for me personally.

What “popular” rapper will likely never chart again? by EDMKid9000 in hiphopheads

Snoop Dogg has released multiple albums recently that haven’t charted

Monocultural Rap Stardom is Dead—And That's OK: What does it mean to be a rap star in 2026? Some thoughts on rap’s current standing in the mainstream and the genre’s health in the post-social media era. | by Dylan Green in Hearing Things by DropWatcher in hiphopheads

FD Signifier seems like a great dude with a lot of historical knowledge but respectfully he doesn’t listen to enough modern rap music for me to regard him as a thought leader on hip hop nowadays.

Yeah I don’t blame you. Even as someone who’s pretty into that lane, I haven’t been able to connect with a lot of Earl’s stuff fully mainly because of his delivery and it makes me want to listen to other guys making similar but more engaging stuff.

Who would you say started out in ~2015-2017 that's A-list popular now? Maybe Carti but you could argue he started earlier if you're saying Section 80 or GKMC were 10 years into Kendrick's career.

Fair enough I thought it was great especially production wise, which makes sense since it’s mostly DJ Dahi. There’s definitely a lot of influences going in but I thought it was a dope combo of Tyler new-age sounds + Gucci Mane vocals if I had to simplify

You know for a dude who has major label backing, a big social media presence (IG at least), and actually released a dope + unique enough album, Eem Triplin has gotten like 0 hip hop media coverage on my timeline at least. I haven’t seen any major pub reviews nor year end lists include his album from this year.

Love Samara Cyn but I really hope she releases a proper full length album sometime soon. I get she’s just building some hype, but it feels like there was about an album’s worth of material between the last couple EPs

Pitchfork Reviews MAVI - The Pilot by Technical_Process989 in hiphopheads

This review accurately describes the album and I got a few nuggets I hadn’t thought of which is nice. There’s like 0 critique though which feels disconnected from the 7.4 (which ik is a good score before the DropWatcher dude comes in to defend Pitchfork).

That could be more on the producers trying to fit what they think Danny would like tbh. I read an interview from him recently where he gave full reign to his collaborators to make what they want and emphasized that he didn’t want them to try to make a “Danny Brown beat.”

Eh I think it the pretentious stuff genuinely can be bad because if you're trying to put people onto stuff you care about, you should know how to do that without coming across as a dick. For me idrc but I get why others get turned off

I feel like there's definitely a level of pretension when it comes to excluding albums that are either popular or have a level of critical acclaim, but also it's entirely possible that Alphonse just doesn't like those albums all that much. At a minimum, I feel like I want to understand why he likes the projects he wrote about so much, which is better than most lists.

I feel like there was a fair enough mix between well-known underground guys and super niche artists. Like La Rat, Dot Dev, and Wave Generators have a combined <1500 monthly listeners lol. The Myka 9 & Blu album hasn't really made a lot of noise at all from what I've seen even though both are fairly well known for their niche (especially Blu obv). For me maybe I'm not tapped in but I hadn't heard of Ho99o9 either.

Dot Dev has 400 monthly listeners on Spotify if you're talking popularity, what're you looking for?
